The Arkansas Senate took up the challenge late on Wednesday, sending legislation to the House of Representatives that would bring its Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) into line with federal statutes. Indiana's governor said lawmakers should fix a similar RFRA. |
McDonald's raising average worker wage to about $10 an hour Posted: 02 Apr 2015 04:26 AM PDT McDonald's Corp plans to raise the average pay of about 90,000 U.S. workers to around $10 an hour, but the increase will not benefit workers at the vast majority of the restaurants, because they are operated by franchisees, who make their own wage decisions. Workers groups said the move by McDonald's, which is also adding benefits such as paid vacations, fell short of their goals. McDonald's, which announced the increases on Wednesday, has been fighting weak traffic and slumping sales in the United States. Starting wages at the restaurants will move to $1 above the locally mandated minimum wage. |

Apparent murder-suicide leaves four dead in Oklahoma Posted: 02 Apr 2015 12:59 AM PDT (Reuters) - Police discovered four bodies of a family, including two young boys, inside a home in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Wednesday in what appeared to be a murder-suicide, officials said. Tulsa Police Captain Matt McCord told reporters that officers went to the home after receiving a call from the employer of the man in the household, requesting they check up on the house. Police found the bodies, all shot and killed, presumably by the father given the proximity of the gun to his body, McCord told reporters in a video published online by the Tulsa World newspaper. |
NYPD detective reassigned after taped tirade against Uber driver Posted: 01 Apr 2015 10:36 PM PDT (Reuters) - A New York police detective was transferred from the department's elite Joint Terrorism Task Force on Wednesday after a video showing him screaming at an Uber driver over an alleged traffic violation went viral online, police said. NYPD Commissioner William Bratton said in a statement the detective, whom he did not identify, was placed on modified assignment and transferred following an internal investigation. The officer, named by the New York Times as Patrick Cherry, can be seen in the video of the Monday incident unleashing an expletive-laden tirade against the driver over alleged vehicle and parking violations. You're not important enough." The three-and-a-half minute video appeared to have been captured by a passenger in the car, who commiserated with the driver when the officer had stepped away. |

Arkansas governor seeks fix of religion bill seen as targeting gays Posted: 01 Apr 2015 07:24 PM PDT By Steve Barnes LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Reuters) - Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson told lawmakers on Wednesday to revise a bill that rights activists and U.S. businesses said allowed discrimination against gays, and home-state corporate giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc praised his action. The state's Senate took up the challenge late on Wednesday, sending to the House of Representatives legislation that would bring the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) into line with federal statutes. Indiana's governor a day earlier said lawmakers should fix a similar RFRA. In a news conference at the Capitol in Little Rock, Hutchinson, who previously said he would sign the bill, said he was sending the act back to the Republican-controlled legislature to be rewritten so it can better balance tolerance for diversity and protections of religious freedom. |
