Video: Islamic State kills Ethiopian Christians in Libya Posted: 19 Apr 2015 12:55 PM PDT CAIRO (AP) — Islamic State militants in Libya shot and beheaded groups of captive Ethiopian Christians, a video purportedly from the extremists showed Sunday. The attack widens the circle of nations affected by the group's atrocities while showing its growth beyond a self-declared caliphate in Syria and Iraq. |

Survivors gather for 20th anniversary of Oklahoma City bombing Posted: 19 Apr 2015 04:40 AM PDT By Heide Brandes OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - When Priscilla Salyers attends Sunday's anniversary ceremony for victims of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, she will be thinking how far she has come in fighting depression and survivor's guilt. She and hundreds of other survivors will bow their heads at the 20th Remembrance Ceremony at the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, marking the day a cargo truck with more than two tons of explosives blew up, killing 168 people. Salyers plummeted five floors when the fuel-and-fertilizer bomb detonated at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building on April 19, 1995. Anti-government militant Timothy McVeigh, who carried out the bombing, and accomplice Terry Nichols were tried and convicted on federal charges. |
Life or death? Boston bomber's trial turns to sentencing Posted: 19 Apr 2015 04:25 AM PDT By Scott Malone BOSTON (Reuters) - Convicted Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is set to return to court on Tuesday for the next phase of his trial, when prosecutors will argue that he should be sentenced to death for his role in the deadly attack in 2013. In sharp contrast to the guilt phase of the trial, when lawyers for the ethnic Chechen defendant did not contest that their client had killed three people and injured 264 in the bombing, the next four weeks are expected to feature emotional testimony from both sides as Tsarnaev fights for his life. The question of whether Tsarnaev, 21, should live or die is highly controversial around Boston. Polls have shown that a plurality of area residents, 49 percent, prefer a life sentence, and family members of two of the people he killed have also spoken out against executing him. |

Report: Up to 700 feared dead after migrant boat sinks off Libya Posted: 19 Apr 2015 01:42 AM PDT ROME (Reuters) - As many as 700 people are feared dead after a boat carrying migrants capsized off the Libyan coast overnight, the Times of Malta reported on Sunday. Twenty eight people were rescued in the incident, which happened in an area just off Libyan waters, 120 miles south of the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, the newspaper's website reported. The emergency was declared at about midnight. The boat is believed to have capsized when migrants moved to one side of the vessel when a merchant ship approached. |
Fast-moving brush fire forces home evacuations near Los Angeles Posted: 19 Apr 2015 12:21 AM PDT (Reuters) - A fast-moving brush fire east of Los Angeles has forced the evacuation of more than 200 homes just hours after it started, fire department officials said on Sunday. The blaze, named the "Highway Fire," was zero percent contained and had spread over 175 acres in Chino Hills, a suburb about 35 miles east of Los Angeles, according to a statement released by the City of Riverside Fire Department. |

Paul, Graham clash on foreign-policy on U.S. campaign trail Posted: 18 Apr 2015 05:52 PM PDT By Andy Sullivan NASHUA, N.H. (Reuters) - Republican presidential hopefuls Rand Paul and Lindsey Graham took their debate over America's role in the world from the U.S. Senate floor to the campaign trail on Saturday in an early sign that foreign policy is likely to be a flash point in the 2016 election. At a gathering of 18 potential and actual White House contenders, Paul accused fellow Republicans of being too willing to commit U.S. troops to foreign conflicts without a clear idea of how to get them out. There's a group of folks in our party who would have troops in six countries right now, maybe more." That drew a rebuke from Graham, a South Carolina senator and Air Force reservist who frequently criticizes Democratic President Barack Obama for not being aggressive enough with adversaries like Iran and the Islamic State. |

From Okla. City to 9/11: 20 years on, rescue workers who responded to both share a bond Posted: 18 Apr 2015 02:11 PM PDT It was just after 9 a.m. on April 19, 1995, when the bomb went off outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. It was one of those events that seem to make the world stop turning. At the time, it was the worst terror attack on U.S. soil. Lt. (now Capt.) Stephen Spall of the New York City Fire Department was driving home from his shift when he heard the news on the radio. He immediately called in to see if he needed to go back to work. The next day, he was on a plane to Oklahoma. |
