Canadian pastor faced 'overwhelming loneliness' in NKorea labor camp Posted: 13 Aug 2017 08:18 PM PDT A Canadian pastor recently freed from imprisonment in North Korea spoke Sunday of the "overwhelming loneliness" and harsh conditions he experienced during his two-and-a-half years in a labor camp. Hyeon Soo Lim, 62, was imprisoned by Pyongyang in January 2015 for carrying out "subversive activities," a charge steadfastly denied by Ottawa which sent a high-level delegation this week to secure his release. White House defends Trump's response to Virginia violence Posted: 13 Aug 2017 06:46 PM PDT The White House on Sunday struggled to defuse the growing criticism of President Donald Trump's initial failure to explicitly condemn white supremacists for their role in the violent protest Saturday in Virginia, insisting that his condemnation included all such groups. A young woman died and 19 people were injured in the city of Charlottesville when a car plowed into a crowd of people after a rally by Ku Klux Klan members and other white nationalists turned violent. A full day after the violence erupted, and after an initial statement in which Trump made no mention of white extremism, a White House spokesperson issued a statement saying, "The president said very strongly in his statement yesterday that he condemns all forms of violence, bigotry and hatred. More NGOs follow MSF in suspending Mediterranean migrant rescues Posted: 13 Aug 2017 02:25 PM PDT By Gavin Jones ROME (Reuters) - Two more aid groups have suspended migrant rescues in the Mediterranean, joining Doctors Without Borders, because they felt threatened by the Libyan coastguard. Save the Children and Germany's Sea Eye said on Sunday their crews could no longer work safely because of the hostile stance of the Libyan authorities. Doctors Without Borders - or Medecins sans Frontieres - cited the same concern when it said on Saturday it would halt Mediterranean operations.
