How the world reacted to the Barcelona terror attack Posted: 17 Aug 2017 02:02 PM PDT World leaders united in their condemnation of the Las Ramblas terror attack on Thursday. Spain The Spanish royal family issued an unusually strongly-worded statement: They are assassins, criminals who won't terrorise us. All of Spain is Barcelona." FC Barcelona said it was "deeply saddened" by the tragedy and the team's talismanic striker Lionel Messi said separately that people must reject "any act of violence". "There are many more of us who want to live in a world in peace, without hate and where respect and tolerance are the basis of coexistence," he added. United States President Donald Trump tweeted: "The United States condemns the terror attack in Barcelona, Spain, and will do whatever is necessary to help. Be tough & strong, we love you!" Defiant Trump isolated after defense of hard right Posted: 16 Aug 2017 10:49 PM PDT Barely 200 days into his already chaotic presidency, Donald Trump found himself an isolated figure on Wednesday after his extraordinary defense of white nationalist protesters sent business leaders and political allies scurrying for cover. Trump upended the norms of American political discourse on Tuesday when, in a ferocious back-and-forth with reporters, he declared there had been "very fine people, on both sides" at a clash between anti-fascists and white supremacists. Trump's initial response was seen as mealy-mouthed by those demanding a full-throated condemnation of racism and violence, but his further remarks on Tuesday -- when he doubled down on his claim that there had been "blame on both sides" -- set off a political firestorm that may come to be seen as a turning point in his presidency. Guam officials 'ecstatic' as North Korea holds off attack Posted: 16 Aug 2017 10:15 PM PDT Guam officials were "ecstatic" Tuesday as North Korea appeared to back away from its threat to fire four missiles towards the US territory in the western Pacific. "There doesn't appear to be any indication, based on what we're hearing, that there will be any missiles attacking in the near future or in the distant future," lieutenant governor Ray Tonorio said. Guam Homeland Security adviser George Charfauros dismissed reports that satellite images showed North Korea moving a missile into place for a possible launch, saying it was likely "just a ruse". Posted: 16 Aug 2017 09:21 PM PDT The city of Charlottesville has celebrated the life of Heather Heyer, a passionate, righteous young woman who "made us pay attention" and who was killed during a neo-Nazi-led protest that has turned into Donald Trump's latest, distracting controversy. Five days after she was killed when an accused white supremacist allegedly drove into her with a car, hundreds of people packed into the city's Paramount Theatre to hear from family and friends, and the people she worked with. Mr Trump tweeted a message of tribute for a "beautiful and incredible" young woman, while presidents George HW Bush and George W Bush said they were praying for the Virginia college town. U.N. inquiry finds Congolese militia likely killed U.N. monitors Posted: 16 Aug 2017 02:36 PM PDT By Michelle Nichols and Aaron Ross UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - A United Nations inquiry found that two U.N. investigators were murdered by a group of Congolese, likely militia members from central Democratic Republic of Congo, but an absence of evidence "does not preclude the possibility that others are involved." Michael Sharp, an American who was coordinator of an independent sanctions monitoring group, and Zaida Catalan, a Swede, were killed in central Congo on March 12 while carrying out investigations for a report to the U.N. Security Council. The bodies of Sharp and Catalan were found in a shallow grave two weeks later. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Venezuela mulls 'law against intolerance,' aimed at dissenters Posted: 16 Aug 2017 01:59 PM PDT By Hugh Bronstein CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelans who express "hate or intolerance" will be jailed for up to 25 years under a bill pending in the country's newly-formed constituent assembly, a measure the opposition fears will be used by the government to further crack down on dissent. President Nicolas Maduro has faced a cacophony of international criticism, from the United Nations to Pope Francis, since he installed the 545-member assembly stacked with Socialist Party allies earlier this month. Maduro defends the new legislative superbody as Venezuela's only hope for peace and prosperity. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
