Bill Cosby's defence lawyer wants to be taken off the case before November retrial Posted: 01 Aug 2017 08:06 PM PDT Bill Cosby's defence lawyer in his sex assault trial that ended with a deadlocked jury wants to be taken off the case before a retrial that is scheduled to begin in November. Brian McMonagle, the celebrity's lead defence lawyer, filed documents on Tuesday seeking to withdraw as Cosby's counsel. He said Cosby was taking steps to secure new lawyers. Andrea Constand, who accuses Bill Cosby of sexual assault Montgomery County Judge Steven O'Neill will consider the request at a pre-trial conference Aug 22. Tillerson says he and Trump disagree over Iran nuclear deal Posted: 01 Aug 2017 07:12 PM PDT By Yeganeh Torbati WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson acknowledged on Tuesday that he and President Donald Trump disagree over the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, and said the two men discuss how to use the international agreement to advance administration policies. Trump at times vowed during the 2016 presidential election campaign to withdraw from the agreement, which was signed by the United States, Russia, China and three European powers to curb Iran's nuclear program in return for lifting most Western sanctions. Trump has preserved the deal for now, although he has made clear he did so reluctantly after being advised to do so by Tillerson. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Trump extols corporate profits while seeking corporate tax cut Posted: 01 Aug 2017 04:23 PM PDT By David Morgan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump sent a Twitter message bragging about corporate America's high profits under his presidency on Tuesday, prompting critics to say he was undercutting Republican arguments in favor of a tax cut for corporations. As Republicans in Washington try to refocus on taxes after the collapse of their failed drive to repeal Obamacare, Trump sent a morning tweet that said: "Corporations have NEVER made as much money as they are making now." Corporate lobbyists and Republicans consistently argue that a cut in the corporate income tax is needed to help corporations be more competitive. Apple’s earnings just gave us a huge hint about the iPhone 8’s release date Posted: 01 Aug 2017 03:28 PM PDT Not very hidden in Apple's Q3 earnings announcement today was a big boost for the iPhone 8. Apple's forward guidance for Q4 2017 -- the period which finishes at the end of September, just days after Apple traditionally launches a new iPhone -- was $49 to 52 billion. Analyst predictions averaged out at $49.1 billion. The bump in forward guidance over expectations hints very heavily that the iPhone 8 may go on sale in September, just inside the fourth quarter. Now, strong forward guidance doesn't mean for sure that the iPhone 8 is coming this year: it could mean that Apple is predicting a big uptick of people upgrading to the iPhone 7s or 7s Plus, or maybe it's just banking on massive HomePod sales.
Tim Cook gave a cryptic quote to Bloomberg's Emily Chan that does hint at something big coming in September. "We've put everything we know into coming up with the guidance...we really like what we see for the beginning of the back-to-school season." If the iPhone 8 is a part of that optimistic earnings prediction, it means that the phone will be launched early enough in September to actually make an impact on Apple's revenues. A common prediction among analysts right now is that the iPhone 8 will see a very limited release in September, due to supply shortages, with production only catching up with demand in early 2018. That is cast in doubt by Apple's predictions here. All things considered, the strong forward guidance is the best news we've had from Apple in months. Although it's not confirmation that the iPhone 8 is definitely coming this fall, it's a very strong indicator that we're going to see something interesting from Apple. It won't pull down $52 billion selling a three-year-old phone design with incremental updates, so unless Apple's entire financial team is deluded, we're going to have something particularly shiny to gawk at come September. China warns Trump over North Korea: ‘Don’t stab us in the back’ Posted: 01 Aug 2017 02:49 PM PDT China has hit back at Donald Trump over North Korea, with a top official blaming Washington and Pyongyang for raising tensions, while state media warned the US not to "stab China in the back". The US president said in two angry tweets at the weekend that he was "very disappointed" with China and that he would no longer allow Beijing to "do nothing" over North Korea. Mr Trump has long believed that China holds the key to forcing North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons programme, given that Beijing is Pyongyang's only diplomatic backer and a key trading partner. I am very disappointed in China. Our foolish past leaders have allowed them to make hundreds of billions of dollars a year in trade, yet...— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 29, 2017 ...they do NOTHING for us with North Korea, just talk. We will no longer allow this to continue. China could easily solve this problem!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 29, 2017 But Liu Jieyi, China's ambassador to the United Nations, said: "No matter how capable China is, China's efforts will not yield practical results because it depends on the two principal parties. "They (the United States and North Korea) hold the primary responsibility to keep things moving, to start moving in the right direction, not China," he told a news conference at the end of China's month-long presidency of the Security Council. How how much of a nuclear risk does North Korea pose in 2017? North Korea's nuclear threat 01:34 Mr Trump's furious comments came after North Korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile in defiance of United Nations sanctions on Friday. Nikki Haley, Washington's ambassador to the UN, said on Sunday that the US was "done talking about North Korea" and that it was time for China to act. China's official state news agency, Xinhua, also waded into the row with a commentary which poked fun at the US President for his use of Twitter. "Trump is something of a character, and he enjoys tweeting," the commentary said. "But an emotional response cannot be the guiding policy to solve the Korean peninsula's nuclear issue." "In order to solve the nuclear issue on the peninsula, relevant parties should use practical action and show sincerity, stop shirking responsibility, and especially should not stab China in the back."
