Merkel's Bavarian allies face threat of poll debacle Posted: 14 Oct 2018 01:43 PM PDT German Chancellor Angela Merkel's arch-conservative Bavarian allies are bracing for heavy electoral losses in the southern Alpine state Sunday that could trigger shockwaves in Berlin. The Christian Social Union (CSU), who have almost single-handedly ruled the wealthy beer-and-lederhosen state since the 1960s, are expected to lose their absolute majority, polls say. The other partner in Merkel's fragile 'grand coalition', the Social Democrats, are also set to do poorly while the far-right and anti-immigration AfD look certain to enter the state assembly. Merkel's Bavarian Ally Loses Absolute Majority in State Vote Posted: 14 Oct 2018 11:15 AM PDT The ruling Christian Social Union, which has dominated Bavarian politics since World War II, took about 36 percent of the vote on Sunday, its lowest result since 1950, according to projections by broadcaster ZDF. Voters migrated to the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany party, or AfD, which won its first seats in the state parliament with about 11 percent, while the other winner of the night was the Green party, which more than doubled its support to some 18 percent. Seven months into her fourth term, the result is a warning shot to Merkel because it reflects fading support nationwide for the three governing parties -- her Christian Democratic Union, the CSU and the Social Democrats. Saudi crown prince's carefully managed rise hides dark side Posted: 14 Oct 2018 07:35 AM PDT DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — In a kingdom once ruled by an ever-aging rotation of elderly monarchs, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman stands out as the youthful face of a youthful nation. But behind the carefully calibrated public-relations campaign pushing images of the smiling prince meeting with the world's top leaders and business executives lurks a darker side. 'Praise God!': Parents of U.S. pastor rejoice at Turkey's release of son Posted: 14 Oct 2018 05:17 AM PDT A court in the western Turkish town of Aliaga on Friday sentenced Andrew Brunson, who had been charged with links to Kurdish militants and supporters of a U.S.-based Muslim cleric, to more than three years in prison but said he would not serve any further time because he had already been detained since October 2016. Pamela Brunson, 75, the mother of the pastor, was at her home in Black Mountain, a town in North Carolina near Asheville, when she learned of the news from a Reuters reporter calling about the court's decision. In Turkey, witnesses said Brunson wept as the decision was announced. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

"I fully anticipate that we will fly again on a Soyuz rocket and I have no reason to believe at this point that it will not be on schedule," he told reporters in Moscow. The NASA administrator spoke to reporters at the US embassy in Moscow a day after a Soyuz rocket failure forced a two-man crew to make an emergency landing in Kazakhstan.
