University of Oklahoma expels two students over racist video Posted: 10 Mar 2015 11:15 AM PDT By Heide Brandes OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - The University of Oklahoma has expelled two students linked to a video showing members of a fraternity singing a song filled with racial epithets, the school's president said on Tuesday. The two students were "identified as playing a leadership role in the singing of a racist chant" connected to a Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity event, President David Boren said in a statement posted on Twitter. "There is zero tolerance for this kind of threatening racist behavior at the University of Oklahoma," he wrote. The university on Monday closed the fraternity after a video surfaced showing students singing the song. |

Fuel truck spill shuts down most of interstate near Washington Posted: 10 Mar 2015 09:27 AM PDT A tanker truck carrying biodiesel fuel overturned on Interstate 95 north of Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, forcing much of the busy highway to shut down, emergency officials and local television said. Minor injuries were reported from the accident, about 10 miles northeast of the U.S. capital, the Prince George's County Fire Department said on its Twitter feed. Hazardous materials crews were containing the spill of an estimated 1,000 gallons of fuel in the southbound lanes of I-95, a major East Coast thoroughfare, it said. Washington's WJLA television reported that all four southbound lanes of the highway were closed and two northbound lanes were shut down. |
Obama to announce changes for student loan repayment Posted: 10 Mar 2015 06:44 AM PDT President Barack Obama is slated to speak to students at Georgia Tech on Tuesday about how he wants to make the process of repaying student loans easier to understand and manage. Obama will sign a "student aid bill of rights" and will speak about an assortment of policy tweaks and projects to try to make it easier to help people with student loans pay back their debt. "It's our responsibility to make sure that the 40 million Americans with student loans are aware of resources to manage their debt, and that we are doing everything we can to be responsive to their needs," said Ted Mitchell, undersecretary of education, on a conference call with reporters. The White House said it will require clearer disclosures from companies to make sure borrowers understand who is servicing their loan and how to set monthly payments and change repayment plans. |
Boston Marathon trial moves into days after deadly blasts, Twitter talk Posted: 10 Mar 2015 04:12 AM PDT The Boston Marathon bombing trial on Tuesday is due to resume with defense lawyers cross-examining an FBI agent who a day earlier discussed two Twitter accounts that defendant Dzhokhar Tsarnaev used in the months leading up to the attack. Tsarnaev, 21, is accused of killing three people and injuring 264 with a pair of homemade bombs at the race's crowded finish line on April 15, 2013, as well as fatally shooting a police officer three days later as he and his brother tried to flee the city. Federal prosecutors contend that Tsarnaev was driven by an extremist view of Islam and a desire to strike back at the United States in revenge for military campaigns in Muslim-dominated countries. Defense lawyers argue that his older brother, 26-year-old Tamerlan, was the driving force behind the attacks and that his younger brother followed him out of a sense of submission. |
American held in Thailand linked to Detroit housing telemarketing scam Posted: 10 Mar 2015 03:24 AM PDT Thai police have arrested an American suspected of being part of a group charged with operating a fraudulent Detroit housing telemarketing scheme that caused losses of over $20 million to nearly 300 people, a senior officer said on Tuesday. New York resident Joseph Simon Arsenault was arrested in Bangkok on Monday after police acted on a request from the U.S. embassy in Bangkok, said Police Major General Warawut Thaweechaiyagarn, investigative commander of Thailand's Immigration Bureau. Arsenault was one of 16 people charged in 2014 with a range of offences including conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan in Detroit. "We are waiting to send him back to the United States which should happen in the very near future." Arsenault was not available for comment. |

U.S. ambassador to South Korea leaves hospital after knife attack Posted: 09 Mar 2015 11:24 PM PDT By James Pearson SEOUL (Reuters) - The U.S. ambassador to South Korea left a Seoul hospital on Tuesday, five days after he was slashed by a knife-wielding Korean nationalist with a history of violent protest, causing wounds that required 80 stitches to the envoy's face. Police are seeking to bring charges including attempted murder against Kim Ki-jong, 55, for the attack at a forum discussing Korean reunification. The ambassador, Mark Lippert, suffered a deep facial gash and a puncture wound on his wrist. Lippert, 42, had become known for an approachable, informal style since taking up his posting in Seoul in November and the attack raised questions about his security arrangements. |

Oklahoma University shuts 'disgraceful' fraternity for racist video Posted: 09 Mar 2015 09:45 PM PDT By Heide Brandes NORMAN, Okla. (Reuters) - The University of Oklahoma closed a fraternity linked to a video of students singing racial epithets, ordered its members to move out of the house and labeled the actions of those involved "disgraceful." "Effective immediately, all ties and affiliations between the university and the local SAE (Sigma Alpha Epsilon) chapter are hereby severed," University President David Boren said on Monday. Over the weekend, ceremonies in Selma, Alabama, marked the 50th anniversary of a crackdown on a civil rights march there known as "Bloody Sunday." In the 10-second video posted online on Sunday and replayed by media outlets, students on a bus chanted in unison, using offensive language referring to blacks and vowing to never admit them into the fraternity. It was not immediately clear when the video of students on a bus chartered for a date night was taped. |
Texas federal judge leaves block on Obama immigration plan in place Posted: 09 Mar 2015 09:12 PM PDT (Reuters) - A federal judge in Texas on Monday declined to lift a block of the White House's immigration plan for at least 10 more days, court records show. U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen in Brownsville, a city along the border with Mexico, issued a preliminary injunction last month halting President Barack Obama's plans that would have shielded millions of illegal immigrants from deportation. On Monday, Hanen said in a one-page order that the court will not rule on any pending motions at least until a court hearing set for March 19, where government attorneys will have to explain a filing that said some 100,000 people had been given three-year periods of deferred action prior to the judge's injunction. He also cited ways that Texas would be harmed by the action but used no other states as examples. |
N.Y. man missing ahead of fraud trial over Facebook claim: lawyer Posted: 09 Mar 2015 07:46 PM PDT By Nate Raymond NEW YORK (Reuters) - An upstate New York man, who was set to face trial in May for attempting to defraud Facebook Inc and founder Mark Zuckerberg, is missing, his lawyer said on Monday. Paul Ceglia, 41, had been required to wear an electronic bracelet before his trial. Representatives for Bharara's office and the Marshals Service did not respond to requests for comment. He claimed he was entitled to ownership of half of Facebook, based on a 2003 contract the two had signed, but prosecutors accused him of forging the contract with Zuckerberg, who would be expected to testify at trial. |

Democratic donors unfazed by Hillary Clinton's use of private email Posted: 09 Mar 2015 07:12 PM PDT Top Democratic donors say they are unfazed by the disclosure that Hillary Clinton conducted State Department business on a personal email account, although several said she could fend off Republican criticism by addressing the issue head-on and announcing her candidacy for president. The presumed front-runner for the Democratic Party's 2016 presidential nomination had generally avoided controversy until the email issue emerged. She's still the person to beat." Lena Kennedy, a Pasadena donor and bundler, added: "I just think Hillary needs to address the questions, and then we need to move on." Clinton is expected to address the issue publicly this week. Last week, as the tempest over the emails grew, the former Secretary of State announced on Twitter that she had asked the State Department to release the 55,000 emails she had previously turned over as a part of the Department's request for records from all former secretaries of state. |

Flight crew cite brake problem in Delta NYC accident: NTSB Posted: 09 Mar 2015 02:38 PM PDT A brake problem may have caused a Delta Air Lines Inc jet to skid off a runway at New York's LaGuardia Airport last week, according to testimony from the flight's crew, federal safety investigators said Monday. The auto brakes were set to "max," but the crew "did not sense any wheel brake deceleration" before the plane crashed into a fence, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement. Another MD-88 aircraft operated by Delta landed on the same runway 3 minutes prior to the plane that crashed, the crew of which described the braking action on the runway as "good," the agency said. Still, the National Transportation Safety Board said it is examining the weather conditions at the time of the accident. |
