Hundreds to attend funeral for unarmed Wisconsin man shot by police Posted: 14 Mar 2015 12:12 PM PDT By Ben Brewer MADISON, Wisc. (Reuters) - Hundreds of people were expected to gather on Saturday for the funeral of a 19-year-old man killed by a police officer in Wisconsin's capital on March 6, a shooting that prompted protests over law enforcement's treatment of minorities. Tony Robinson Jr., a biracial young man, was unarmed during a confrontation with a white police officer in Madison, his death being the latest in a string of shootings of unarmed black and Latino men in U.S. cities that stirred debate about race and policing. Wisconsin residents were expected to join friends and family of Tony Robinson, also known as Terrell, at a funeral service to be held at a high school fieldhouse to accommodate the large crowd. There have been large, peaceful protests in Madison, with activists saying the shooting highlights a longstanding trend of racial bias among law enforcement in the city. |
New York police arrest two more teens from McDonald's attack video Posted: 14 Mar 2015 11:06 AM PDT (Reuters) - New York City police have arrested two more teenage girls on charges related to a beating and robbery of a young woman at a McDonald's restaurant that was captured on video that went viral, a police spokeswoman said on Saturday. Police in New York had already arrested 16-year-old girl in connection with the attack, while a fourth was arrested on Friday in Atlanta, the New York Police Department spokeswoman said. It shows a group of girls punching another girl as a cheering crowd encircles them at a McDonald's in Brooklyn on Monday. New York police on Friday arrested 17-year-old Tilani Marshall and a 15-year-old girl whose name is not being released because of her age. |
USDA reports virulent strain of avian flu in Kansas poultry Posted: 14 Mar 2015 10:12 AM PDT The U.S. Department of Agriculture has confirmed an infection of a virulent strain of avian flu in poultry in Kansas, the first case in a migratory bird route that runs through the center of the country. The USDA identified the H5N2 flu strain in a backyard chicken and duck flock in Leavenworth County, Kansas, according to a statement issued on Friday. It is the first case in the Central flyway migratory route, which stretches north-south from Montana to Texas. |
U.S. appeals ruling on size of BP oil spill Posted: 14 Mar 2015 09:54 AM PDT The U.S. government is appealing a federal court ruling that reduced the potential penalty BP Plc must pay for the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill by almost $4 billion. The appeal, which was filed on Friday in U.S. District Court in New Orleans, challenges a January decision by U.S. District Court Judge Carl Barbier that set the size of the spill at 3.19 million barrels. The appeal did not detail what aspects of Barbier's ruling it was challenging. |

Ten L.A. high school students arrested in sexual assaults Posted: 13 Mar 2015 10:46 PM PDT By Alex Dobuzinskis LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Police arrested 10 teenagers from a Los Angeles high school on Friday in connection with sexual assaults and unlawful sex acts against two fellow students, and investigators were seeking four more youths as suspects, authorities said. Police said the case came to their attention when administrators at Venice High School, a campus in a relatively affluent community near the beach in the west of the city, reported a suspected sexual assault to detectives on Tuesday evening. Investigators discovered that two female students at the school had been sexually assaulted between December 2013 and this month, both on and off campus, said Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Commander Andrew Smith. Officers set out on Friday to arrest 14 suspects, all boys aged 14 to 17 believed to be responsible for sexually assaulting the two girls or engaging with them in unlawful sex acts, Smith said. |

Quick answers to double shooting elude police in Ferguson, Missouri Posted: 13 Mar 2015 06:30 PM PDT By Nick Carey and Jim Young FERGUSON, Mo. (Reuters) - Nearly 48 hours after two officers were shot in racially charged Ferguson, Missouri, investigators had dozens of leads but no arrests to report on Friday in the hunt for a gunman who turned a late-night protest against police into bedlam. St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said authorities had "a pretty good idea" where the gunshots that wounded the officers had originated, without providing any specifics. The latest bout of violence in the St. Louis suburb, first rattled by the killing of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown by a white officer last summer, brought out signs of sympathy for the police. One protester stood opposite the Ferguson police department with a sign "Cops Lives Matter," playing on the "Black Lives Matter" slogan that sprang up in the wake of the deaths of Brown and an unarmed black man in New York City. |

Beer brand discord leads to Louisiana shooting: police Posted: 13 Mar 2015 05:22 PM PDT An argument between a 64-year-old man who wanted a Budweiser beer and his friend who handed him a can of Busch instead ended when the disgruntled recipient shot the other man in the arm, wounding him in a Louisiana parking lot, police said on Friday. The incident, which occurred on March 7 in the New Orleans suburb of Harvey, resulted in Clarence Sturdivant shooting his neighbor Walter Merrick, 66, in the arm, with Merrick sustaining wounds that were not life-threatening, said Colonel John Fortunato, spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. Witnesses told police that the incident, which began with Sturdivant and Merrick arguing over the respective merits of the beer brands, escalated when Merrick pointed a gun at Sturdivant, with the Budweiser adherent then firing a shotgun in self-defense, Fortunato said. |
Oklahoma fraternity members receive death threats over racist video Posted: 13 Mar 2015 02:09 PM PDT By Heide Brandes OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - A lawyer hired by the board of directors of a University of Oklahoma fraternity linked to a racist video said on Friday he has no current plans to sue the school but wants to ensure the safety of fraternity members after some received death threats. "The last thing I want to do is go to court," Stephen Jones, a high-profile attorney who represented convicted Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, told a news conference. Jones said while he is not currently planning to sue the university for punishments it has imposed against the Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter, he is not ruling out legal action. The university shut down the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house and expelled the two members who it said were the leaders in the video. |
