Similar legislation is making its way through the U.S. Senate and backers of both bills say they have a good chance of passing after repeated setbacks. Indiana governor signs religious freedom bill that could affect gays

Posted: 26 Mar 2015 07:48 AM PDT

(Reuters) - Indiana Governor Mike Pence on Thursday signed into law a religious freedom bill that could allow businesses and individuals to deny services to gays on religious grounds. Supporters of the bill, which was passed overwhelmingly by both chambers of the Republican-controlled state legislature, say it will keep the government from forcing business owners to act in ways contrary to strongly held religious beliefs. "The Constitution of the United States and the Indiana Constitution both provide strong recognition of the freedom of religion but today, many people of faith feel their religious liberty is under attack by government action," said Pence, in a statement after signing the bill. Legal experts say the Religious Freedom Restoration Act sets a standard that will allow people of all faiths to bring religious freedom claims.

U.S. autoworkers face threat as car makers drawn to Mexico

Posted: 25 Mar 2015 03:04 PM PDT

UAW President Dennis Williams addresses their Special Bargaining Convention held at COBO Hall in DetroitBy Bernie Woodall DETROIT (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers union on Wednesday said getting raises for workers at the Detroit automakers will be a top priority in contract talks this summer, but more jobs and production are shifting to U.S. plants without unions and Mexico. In the next six years, Mexico's auto production will rise to more than a quarter of the North American market, according to industry consultant IHS Inc. Earlier this week, General Motors Co said it would build a factory in Mexico to assemble a new generation of compact Chevrolet Cruze sedans, although the company said that would not affect a Lordstown, Ohio, plant that builds the same model. The rise of Mexico as an auto assembly hub is just one factor working against the UAW as it launches contract talks with Ford Motor Co, General Motors and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles this summer.
