U.S. lawmaker to Homeland Security: 'clean up' Secret Service Posted: 26 Mar 2015 09:42 AM PDT A U.S. lawmaker on Thursday questioned Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson's choice of a veteran agent to lead the U.S. Secret Service and said the agency that protects the American president needs to be cleaned up. We all have the highest of regard and respect for the Secret Service. Rogers questioned the choice of Joseph Clancy, a 27-year veteran of the Secret Service, as its director, citing an independent panel's recommendation that the new director be picked from outside the agency, which it described as insular. Secret Service Director Julia Pierson stepped down in October after a Sept. 19 White House breach in which a man carrying a knife jumped the fence and ran into the executive mansion. |
U.S. DEA agents had sex parties funded by drug cartels: watchdog Posted: 26 Mar 2015 09:26 AM PDT U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents in an unnamed country had alleged "sex parties" with prostitutes funded by local drug cartels over several years, according to a report published on Thursday by the Justice Department's internal watchdog. The 10 agents - an assistant regional director and nine special agents - had the alleged parties "at government-leased headquarters," and three of the special agents "were provided money, expensive gifts, and weapons from drug cartel members," according to the report. One special agent was cleared of all wrongdoing, the report said. The findings are part of a investigation by the Office of the Inspector General, which analyzed allegations of sexual harassment and sexual misconduct between October 2008 and September 2012. |

Indiana governor signs religious freedom bill that could affect gays Posted: 26 Mar 2015 07:48 AM PDT (Reuters) - Indiana Governor Mike Pence on Thursday signed into law a religious freedom bill that could allow businesses and individuals to deny services to gays on religious grounds. Supporters of the bill, which was passed overwhelmingly by both chambers of the Republican-controlled state legislature, say it will keep the government from forcing business owners to act in ways contrary to strongly held religious beliefs. "The Constitution of the United States and the Indiana Constitution both provide strong recognition of the freedom of religion but today, many people of faith feel their religious liberty is under attack by government action," said Pence, in a statement after signing the bill. Legal experts say the Religious Freedom Restoration Act sets a standard that will allow people of all faiths to bring religious freedom claims. |
