Mourners throng funeral of seven Jewish children killed in New York fire Posted: 22 Mar 2015 12:24 PM PDT By Sebastien Malo NEW YORK (Reuters) - The funeral of seven Orthodox Jewish children who perished in one of New York's deadliest fires in years drew a sea of mourners on Sunday to a Brooklyn neighborhood where the blaze has raised concerns about the safety of Sabbath cooking practices. Around the corner from the home where only the mother and one of her eight children survived the early Saturday blaze, the Fire Department of New York handed out pamphlets titled "Fire Safety for Jewish Observances" as well as smoke alarms and batteries. The fire department blamed a malfunctioning electric hotplate for the fire that raced through the home at around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, killing the children, ages 5 to 16. The blaze critically injured their 15-year-old sister, Siporah, and mother, Gayle Sassoon, 45. |
Tunisian president says third suspect in museum attack on the run Posted: 22 Mar 2015 11:50 AM PDT Tunisia's President Beji Caid Essebsi said on Sunday that a third gunman involved in an attack that killed 23 people, mostly foreign tourists, at a Tunis museum last week was on the run. The shootings at the museum inside Tunisia's parliament compound was one of the worst militant attacks in Tunisian history and brought to light the threat posed by Islamist militants to the young democracy, four years after its "Arab Spring" revolt. Some had recently returned from fighting for Islamist militant groups in Syria and Libya. "For sure there were three because they have been identified and filmed on surveillance cameras," Essebsi said in a televised interview with Europe 1 radio, iTELE and Le Monde newspaper. |
Florida mother skips hearing on charges of murdering two children Posted: 22 Mar 2015 11:01 AM PDT A Florida mother waived her right to attend a first court hearing on Sunday to face charges of murdering two of her young children and attempting to murder her five-month-old baby, an official at Brevard County Detention Center said. Jessica Lacey McCarty, 33, of Palm Bay was represented by a public defender, with a judge setting arraignment for April 21, the official said. McCarty was ordered held without bond and remains under medical watch at Brevard County Detention Center, the official said. The medical examiner's office on Sunday will perform autopsies on McCarty's two older children, ages 7 and 6, to determine how they died. |

Confederate flag license plate battle reaches U.S. Supreme Court Posted: 22 Mar 2015 06:22 AM PDT By Lawrence Hurley WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday takes up a free speech case on whether Texas was wrong in rejecting a specialty vehicle license plate displaying the Confederate flag - to some an emblem of Southern pride and to others a symbol of racism. The nine justices will hear a one-hour oral argument in a case that raises the issue of how states can allow or reject politically divisive messages on license plates without violating free speech rights. States can generate revenue by allowing outside groups to propose specialty license plates that people then pay a fee to put on their vehicle. The group Sons of Confederate Veterans says its aim is to preserve the "history and legacy" of soldiers who fought for the pro-slavery Confederacy in the U.S. Civil War. |

Islamic State calls on backers to kill 100 U.S. military personnel Posted: 21 Mar 2015 07:28 PM PDT Islamic State has posted online what it says are the names, U.S. addresses and photos of 100 American military service members, and called upon its "brothers residing in America" to kill them. In the posting, a group referring to itself as the "Islamic State Hacking Division" wrote in English that it had hacked several military servers, databases and emails and made public the information on 100 members of the U.S. military so that "lone wolf" attackers can kill them. The Times quoted officials as saying the list appeared to have been drawn from personnel mentioned in news articles about air strikes on Islamic State. The posting, addressed to disbelievers, Christians and "crusaders" in America, included what the group said were the names, military service branch, photos and street addresses of the individuals. |
