U.S. may deport to China indicted ex-wife of fugitive Chinese official Posted: 18 Mar 2015 12:38 PM PDT By Tim Reid LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The United States may deport to China the ex-wife of a fugitive Chinese official indicted on money laundering and immigration fraud charges, a U.S. prosecutor said on Wednesday. The U.S. Justice Department on Tuesday indicted Jianjun Qiao, the former director of a government grain storage facility in central China, and his ex-wife, Shilan Zhao, accusing them of funneling stolen money into the United States and fraudulently obtaining U.S. visas. |
Racism, hazing, nude photos and vandalism rock U.S. college fraternities Posted: 18 Mar 2015 12:22 PM PDT The 160-year-old Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity - with 15,000 student members - said it would try to wipe out racism and beef up its small minority membership through diversity training and swift punishment of inappropriate behavior. At a news conference in Chicago, SAE Executive Director Blaine Ayers said he was disgusted and embarrassed by a 10-second video showing members using a racial epithet and chanting in unison a vow never to admit blacks to the fraternity, whose motto is "The True Gentleman." The SAE chapter at the University of Oklahoma was shut down after the video was revealed this month and the fraternity says it will punish members over the incident. GOOD MORAL CHARACTER Millions of U.S. college students belong to fraternities and sororities, often seen as conduits to good careers through large alumni networks. On Wednesday the University of Houston suspended a chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity and five of its members over a hazing incident the school described as a criminal act. |

Mesa Vice Mayor Dennis Kavanaugh confirmed in a phone interview that multiple people in the city have been shot and that the shooter has not been caught. The Arizona Republic, citing an unnamed police source, said that one person was killed in the shooting and five others were wounded. Anti-Israel ad can be barred from Seattle buses, appeals court rules Posted: 18 Mar 2015 09:54 AM PDT County officials in Seattle can prohibit an advertisement criticizing Israeli policies toward Palestinians from appearing on local buses without violating constitutional protections on free speech, a U.S. appeals court said on Wednesday. In a 2-1 ruling, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco found that Kings County acted reasonably when it barred the ad, which sparked threats of vandalism and violence that could have endangered passengers. Neither a Kings County spokesman nor a representative for the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington Foundation, which challenged the ban, was immediately available for comment. In 2010, a non-profit group opposed to U.S. support for Israel proposed a bus ad that read: "ISRAELI WAR CRIMES YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK," along with a website address. |

The threats also targeted the U.S. consul general in Okinawa, Alfred Magleby, according to Yomiuri and U.S. media reports on Wednesday. Boston bombing trial to focus on investigators' findings Posted: 18 Mar 2015 04:22 AM PDT By Elizabeth Barber BOSTON (Reuters) - The jury in the Boston Marathon bombing trial is expected on Wednesday to hear more technical evidence on the investigation that followed the deadly blasts and the chaotic days afterward. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 21, is charged with killing three people and injuring 264 with a pair of homemade bombs at the race's crowded finish line on April 15, 2013, and with fatally shooting a university police officer three days later. FBI Special Agent Jessica Ulmer on Tuesday testified that agents found blood on a vehicle, a garage door and inside a private home's bathroom near the Watertown, Massachusetts, backyard where Tsarnaev was arrested, suggesting that the defendant picked his way through the sleepy neighborhood while seeking a hiding spot. |

Exclusive: U.S. to roll back 'lost pleasure' approach on health rules Posted: 17 Mar 2015 10:19 PM PDT By Sharon Begley and Toni Clarke NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government is preparing to roll back a widely criticized approach to public health, in which the "lost pleasure" people might suffer if they quit smoking or chose to eat healthier foods was used to reduce the projected benefits of new regulations, government officials told Reuters. A broad array of public health advocates, lawmakers, and economists criticized the agency's use of the analysis, however, saying it was applied incorrectly and sharply undercut the projected benefits of regulations meant to improve public health. Officials at the FDA and its parent agency, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), have now intervened to curtail such analysis, according to officials involved. HHS Assistant Secretary Richard Frank, a healthcare economist on leave from Harvard Medical School, asked leading researchers to offer "ideas for new ways of analyzing lost consumer surplus in these cases," according to a letter last month to members of Congress, which was reviewed by Reuters. |

Cecil Clayton, 74, of southwest Missouri, was pronounced dead at 9:21 p.m. CDT after receiving a lethal injection of drugs at a Missouri state prison. He was the second inmate executed in Missouri this year and the 10th in the country. He shot Barry County Sheriff's Deputy Christopher Castetter in the head while the officer was in his patrol car. |
Envelope mailed to White House tests 'presumptive positive' for cyanide Posted: 17 Mar 2015 06:52 PM PDT An envelope mailed to the White House tested "presumptive positive" for cyanide and will undergo more testing to confirm the results, the U.S. Secret Service said on Tuesday. The agency charged with protecting the president said the envelope, which was received on Monday at the White House Mail Screening Facility, initially tested negative. Biological testing on Tuesday "returned a presumptive positive for Cyanide," the Secret Service said in a statement, adding the sample was then sent to another facility to confirm the results. |
Satisfaction over prospect of accused U.S. killer Durst facing justice Posted: 17 Mar 2015 05:18 PM PDT By Jonathan Kaminsky NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - With accused murderer Robert Durst set to spend at least six days in a Louisiana jail awaiting extradition to California, law enforcement officials and friends of possible victims expressed satisfaction on Tuesday over the prospect of the real estate scion facing justice. Durst, 71, the subject of a six-part HBO documentary series called "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst," was picked up by a filmmaker's microphone saying he "killed them all," apparently acknowledging his crimes, in footage that aired on Sunday. He was arrested on Saturday by FBI agents at a New Orleans hotel, where he was staying under an alias and was deemed a risk to flee the country, after Los Angeles County issued a warrant for his arrest in the 2000 killing of longtime friend Susan Berman. Long estranged from his powerful family with its major New York real estate holdings, the eccentric Durst was acquitted in 2003 in the dismemberment and killing of a male neighbor in Texas, and was a suspect in the disappearance of his wife, Kathleen Durst, in 1982. |

Exclusive: San Bernardino has defaulted on $10 million in bond payments Posted: 17 Mar 2015 02:57 PM PDT The southern California city of San Bernardino has defaulted on nearly $10 million in payments on its privately placed pension bond debt since it declared bankruptcy in 2012, according to documents seen by Reuters. In addition, the city has not negotiated with its bondholders since September, according to a person familiar with the stalled negotiations. San Bernardino declared last year that it intends under its bankruptcy exit plan to fully pay Calpers, its biggest creditor and America's largest public pension fund with assets of $300 billion. The city continues to pay its monthly dues to Calpers in full, but has paid nothing to its bondholders for nearly three years, according to the interest payment schedule on roughly $50 million of pension obligation bonds issued by San Bernardino in 2005. |
