Accused murderer of missing New York boy will not testify: defense Posted: 30 Mar 2015 11:42 AM PDT By Natasja Sheriff NEW YORK (Reuters) - A former grocery store worker accused of murdering a New York boy missing for decades will not testify in his own defense, his attorney said on Monday. Pedro Hernandez, 54, is on trial for kidnapping and murder in a case that hinges on his confession to police in 2012 that he choked 6-year-old Etan Patz, stuffed him in a box and left him in a New York alley. Patz vanished as he walked alone for the first time to a school bus stop in his Manhattan neighborhood on May 25, 1979. His disappearance sparked a national movement to find missing children, with his picture one of the first to appear on milk cartons. |

Supreme Court preserves New York ban on worship services in schools Posted: 30 Mar 2015 07:24 AM PDT By Lawrence Hurley WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday left intact New York City's ban on religious worship services inside school buildings after hours. In a brief order, the court said it would not hear an appeal filed by the Bronx Household of Faith, a conservative Congregational church. The court's action leaves intact an April 2014 ruling by the New York-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which upheld the ban. The appeals court had said the New York City Board of Education's regulation, created so the city would not be perceived as endorsing religious activity in a public forum, "was consistent with its constitutional duties." That court said the ban was a reasonable way to abide by the so-called Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which provides for separation of church and state. |
U.S. Supreme Court rejects Obamacare 'death panel' challenge Posted: 30 Mar 2015 06:52 AM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear a new challenge to the Obamacare law that took aim at a bureaucratic board labeled by some Republicans as a "death panel" because it was designed to cut Medicare costs. The high court left intact a ruling by the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that threw out the lawsuit. (Reporting by Lawrence Hurley; Editing by Will Dunham) |

A Reuters/Ipsos online poll this month asked 2,809 Americans to rate how much of a threat a list of countries, organizations and individuals posed to the United States on a scale of 1 to 5, with one being no threat and 5 being an imminent threat. The poll showed 34 percent of Republicans ranked Obama as an imminent threat, ahead of Putin (25 percent), who has been accused of aggression in the Ukraine, and Assad (23 percent). |

Firefighters gain on Montana fire that forced evacuation of ski area Posted: 29 Mar 2015 07:51 PM PDT Firefighters in Montana on Sunday were working to contain a wildfire that forced the evacuation of hundreds from a ski area as flames driven by high winds threatened to engulf the only road to and from the resort, officials said. The Red Lodge Mountain Ski Area in the Custer Gallatin National Forest in south central Montana resumed operations on Sunday after skiers were told to leave the day before as a safety precaution. No other structures were under evacuation orders as moderating weather conditions were expected to give fire crews the upper hand for the first time in two days, said fire information officer Jeff Gildehaus. The blaze was one of several that broke out on Saturday in southern Montana and northern Wyoming, where unseasonably warm temperatures and winds gusting up to 60 miles an hour gave rise to extreme fire behavior usually seen in late fall in the Northern Rocky Mountain states, Gildehaus said. |
Two missing men likely found amid NYC gas explosion rubble: fire official Posted: 29 Mar 2015 06:33 PM PDT By Sebastien Malo and Laila Kearney NEW YORK (Reuters) - Two bodies found on Sunday at the site of a gas explosion that destroyed three New York City apartment buildings last week, injuring 22 people, were believed to be those of two unaccounted for men, the city's top fire official said. The bodies were found about 20 feet apart of one of the buildings reduced to rubble by the blast and fire in Manhattan's East Village neighborhood on Thursday, Fire Department Commissioner Daniel Nigro told reporters. While Nigro said a medical examiner had not officially determined that the remains belonged to the two people who remain unaccounted for, local broadcaster NY1 News said one of the missing men, 23-year-old Nicholas Figueroa, had been identified by his family as one of the bodies found on Sunday. Also missing was Moises Lucon. |

Six-year department veteran John Moynihan was shot just below the eye on Friday night by a 41-year-old man identified as Angelo West. Fellow officers returned fire and West, who had a criminal record including prior gun charges, died of wounds at the scene. As the driver got out of the car, without warning he shot Moynihan, a 34-year-old former U.S. Army Ranger, in the face, police said. ... |
DNA from 78 Germanwings crash victims found Posted: 29 Mar 2015 04:21 PM PDT Forensic teams have isolated 78 distinct DNA strands from body parts at the Germanwings crash site in the French Alps, while investigators continued their grim task in the arduous mountain terrain. As well as trying to identify and return bodies to their families, search teams were also hunting for a second "black box" that has yet to be found six days into the search. "We haven't found a single body intact," said Patrick Touron, deputy director of the police's criminal research institute. So far, forensic teams have isolated 78 DNA strands from recovered body parts, said prosecutor Brice Robin, one of the lead investigators. |
