Camp David summit to show Obama Gulf's generational shift Posted: 12 May 2015 09:27 AM PDT By Angus McDowall and William Maclean RIYADH/DUBAI (Reuters) - The new generation of Gulf Arab leaders meeting U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday appear more assertive than their fathers, want a range of alliances instead of dependence on Washington, and may be readier to say 'no' to their main ally. Saudi Arabia's King Salman, 79, caused a stir this week when he said he would send his two heirs to the United States for the summit instead, raising fears about Gulf anger over U.S. policy and reluctance to bless its plans for an Iran nuclear deal. Kuwait's 85-year-old emir is the only member of the old guard of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) leaders attending Camp David, although Qatar's emir, who has ruled for less than two years, will also be there. |
Amidst an oil boom, North Dakota produces premium caviar Posted: 12 May 2015 09:10 AM PDT By Ernest Scheyder WILLISTON, N.D. (Reuters) - North Dakota is known globally not just for prolific oil production, but also, it turns out, for caviar. As paddlefish, one of North America's largest freshwater fish, make their way north to spawn, their eggs, or roe, are processed at the water's edge to make more than 2,000 pounds of caviar prized by clients from Tokyo to Toronto to New York. "Everyone will tell you that Russian sturgeon caviar is the best, and since the quality of our caviar is so close, we feel like we're second," said June Sheaks, executive director of North Star Caviar, the nonprofit company behind the caviar operation. Before North Star was formed about 25 years ago, roe from female paddlefish was discarded by North Dakota fishermen. |

Christie: Obama, Fed have worsened U.S. inequality Posted: 12 May 2015 07:33 AM PDT Potential Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie on Tuesday sharply criticized the policies of President Barack Obama and the Federal Reserve, saying they had widened the gulf between the rich and poor in the United States. The governor of New Jersey, Christie said Obama's failure to curb spending and his regulatory policies had led to stagnant growth. While middle-class families struggled, the Fed's "easy money" policies had boosted stock prices and helped the rich acquire even more wealth, he said. |

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department website said the shooting occurred in the community of Isla Vista. A UC Santa Barbara security alert said a male suspect was seen fleeing the area in a white sedan, and that residents were advised to stay indoors while police searched the area. The shooting comes roughly a year after Elliot Rodger, 22, stabbed three men to death in his Isla Vista apartment before fatally shooting three more people near the campus. |

Texas, Arkansas governors declare disasters after deadly tornadoes Posted: 11 May 2015 05:57 PM PDT By Lisa Maria Garza and Steve Barnes VAN, Texas/LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Reuters) - The governors of Texas and Arkansas declared disasters on Monday in parts of their states hit by tornadoes and floods in a storm series that slammed central states, leaving at least four people dead, injuring more than 50 and reducing buildings to splinters. A husband and wife were killed near a trailer park in Van, Texas, about 70 miles (115 km) southeast of Dallas, a town of about 2,500 people where scores of homes were shattered. The National Weather Service said an EF3 category tornado packing winds of around 140 mph (225 kph) hit the town. Near the west Arkansas town of Nashville, a baby girl about 18 months old was pulled from the wreckage of a mobile home where her parents died in a tornado there. |
