U.S. announces July hearing on Fiat Chrysler recalls Posted: 18 May 2015 12:23 PM PDT The Obama administration on Monday escalated its running regulatory battle with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV by announcing a public hearing to scrutinize how the automaker has handled 20 recalls affecting more than 10 million vehicles. As part of a broader effort to get automakers to speed up the repair of recalled cars and trucks, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said FCA could face up to $700 million in fines and be required to buy back or replace vehicles if regulators find evidence that it failed in its legal recall obligations. The proceedings would be the broadest public hearing the agency had held to date and follows what NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind described as frustrated attempts by the agency to get Fiat Chrysler's U.S. unit, FCA US LLC, to move more aggressively to correct defects tied to fires, loss of control, unintended air bag deployments and fuel leaks. |

An investigation continued into the cause of the derailment that killed eight people and injured more than 200 others last Tuesday evening. The train was barreling north at twice the 50-mile-per-hour speed limit when it entered a sharp curve and derailed just north of Philadelphia. It was headed to New York from Washington with 243 people on board. |

Obama to set new limits on police use of military equipment Posted: 18 May 2015 03:29 AM PDT By Julia Edwards WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama plans to put in place new restrictions on the use of military equipment by police departments, following unrest in U.S. cities over the deaths of black men at the hands of police officers, the White House said on Monday. Obama will ban police use of equipment such as explosive-resistant vehicles with tracked wheels like those seen on army tanks, the White House said in a fact sheet. Obama will announce the steps, which are the result of an executive order, during a visit later on Monday to Camden, New Jersey, where he plans to push efforts to encourage trust-building between police and the communities they serve. The fatal shooting of unarmed teenager Michael Brown by a Ferguson, Missouri police officer in August was followed by a string of highly publicized fatal encounters between police and black men, including Walter Scott who was shot by an officer while fleeing the scene of a traffic stop in North Charleston, South Carolina. |

Amtrak engineer made no report of object hitting windshield before crash: NTSB Posted: 17 May 2015 02:15 PM PDT By Patrick Rucker WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. federal investigators have found no record that the engineer of the Amtrak commuter train that crashed in Philadelphia last week reported an object hit his locomotive in the minutes before it derailed, a U.S. official said on Sunday. The comment by Robert Sumwalt, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board, comes as investigators are looking to explain what caused a circular pattern of damage found on the locomotive's windshield after the accident. "We listened to the dispatch tape, and we heard no communications at all from the Amtrak engineer to the dispatch center to say that something had struck his train," Sumwalt told ABC television's "This Week." Sumwalt spoke on several television networks on Sunday. The NTSB has asked the FBI to help it examine the damage to the windshield, which is about the size of a grapefruit. |
