Jury sentences Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to death Posted: 15 May 2015 12:50 PM PDT |
Mark Everson ran the IRS. Now he wants to be president. Posted: 15 May 2015 09:30 AM PDT There comes a moment in the career of many government bureaucrats when they sit across the table from a high-ranking elected official — the president, even—and think, You know, I'm just as smart as these guys. "You understand they're just another person," says Mark Everson, who served in the Reagan administration and as commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service under George W. Bush. "You ask yourself, Do you like this? Do you think you qualify?" The answers he arrived at — yes and yes — led him, after a long period of soul-searching, to the Lincoln Dinner of the Linn County (Iowa) Republican Committee on May 1, where he shared a dais with the only other presidential candidate who showed up, an Indiana contractor named Mike Petyo. Because the hard truth about presidential politics is that while you may be just as smart as the guys who win, you almost certainly aren't as famous, charismatic or rich. |

Saudi man gets life in U.S. prison in Africa embassy bombings case Posted: 15 May 2015 07:33 AM PDT A Saudi man whom U.S. authorities described as one of Osama bin Laden's closest advisers was sentenced to life in prison on Friday in connection with the deadly 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. Khalid al-Fawwaz was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan after being convicted of four conspiracy counts in federal court in New York in February. |
IS seizes government HQ in Iraq's Ramadi Posted: 15 May 2015 07:17 AM PDT Islamic State fighters seized the government compound in the city of Ramadi on Friday and edged closer to what would be their biggest victory in Iraq this year, officials said. The loss of the capital of Anbar province, which Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had said would be the next target of government forces after wresting back Tikrit last month, would be a major setback for Baghdad. IS has threatened to take control of Ramadi for months and the breakthrough came after a wide offensive on several fronts in the province, including an assault using several suicide car bombs in Ramadi on Thursday. The jihadists seized the government complex at around 2:00 pm (1100 GMT) and raised the black flag, a police officer said, giving them nearly full control over Anbar's capital. |
Texas bill to add barriers to gay marriage dies in House Posted: 15 May 2015 07:01 AM PDT By Jon Herskovitz AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Republican-backed legislation to put new blockades on same-sex marriage in Texas died in the statehouse on Friday after failing to win approval by a midnight deadline amid stalling tactics by the Democratic minority. About a decade ago, voters in the largely conservative state overwhelmingly approved a Texas constitutional amendment that only allows marriage between a man and a woman. All bills, except the budget, that did not pass in the Texas House of Representatives before Friday are not allowed to proceed. Before gay marriage became legal in the liberal northeastern state of Massachusetts in 2004, it was not permitted in any state. |
Boston Marathon bomber's life in balance as jury deliberates Posted: 15 May 2015 04:18 AM PDT The jury in the Boston Marathon bombing trial on Friday heads into its third day of deliberations on whether Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is sentenced to death or to life in prison without the possibility of release. Three days later, he and his 26-year-old brother shot a police officer to death, setting off 24 hours of chaos in which the pair carjacked a Chinese businessman and hurled bombs at police, triggering a daylong lockdown of most of the Boston area while police searched for Tsarnaev. Federal prosecutors contend that Tsarnaev, who moved with his family to Cambridge, Massachusetts, from Russia a decade before the attack, was an adherent of al Qaeda's militant Islamist ideology who wanted to "punish America" with the attack. |

Two Florida students shot, wounded while riding school bus Posted: 14 May 2015 09:16 PM PDT (Reuters) - Two teenage girls riding on a Florida school bus full of students were shot and wounded on Thursday when a person opened fire at the vehicle, officials said. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office provided limited details about the shooting, which occurred around 4 p.m. local time, but said two girls, aged 14 and 15, were struck and authorities were searching for two male suspects. "When I got word of the shooting there was a deep anger that permeated my whole being," said Duval County Public Schools Superintendent Nikolai Vitti. |
Four dead at home that burned in Washington: local media Posted: 14 May 2015 03:50 PM PDT Four people were found dead in a home in northwest Washington after a fire on Thursday that the chief of police said was "suspicious" in nature. At a news conference outside the home in an upscale section of the nation's capital, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said firefighters responding to the blaze found three adults and one child dead. Washington Police Chief Cathy Lanier told reporters there were no obvious signs of forced entry but that "the nature and origin of the fire is very suspicious." She said the identities of the victims had not yet been confirmed. The home is not far from the U.S. Naval Observatory grounds, where the vice president's residence is located, and the Washington National Cathedral. |
