(Reuters) - A mild earthquake rattled the Los Angeles area on Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), causing no reported damage. The quake with a magnitude of 3.9 struck at about 4 a.m. (7 a.m. ET) and was centered near View Park-Windsor Hills, about 10 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles, the USGS said. Shaking described as weak could be felt east to Riverside and south to Irvine, it said. No damage was reported, according to local media. A stronger quake of 4.2 struck on Saturday at midday near Kalamazoo, Michigan, the USGS said. ...

"My goal has always been to not have the curfew in place a single day longer than was necessary. I believe we have reached that point today," Rawlings-Blake said on Twitter. Freddie Gray's death last month was the latest in a string of police killings of unarmed black men that have sparked anger and protests across the United States over the past year. "What happened in Baltimore sets the bar for prosecutors across the country," said State Senator Catherine Pugh. "It raises the standard of what you can do." After a day of violence on Monday, when rioters torched buildings and cars and threw rocks at police, the mostly black city of 620,000 people has seen a week of largely peaceful demonstrations and marchers that swelled into the thousands of people on Friday and Saturday after charges were brought.

(Reuters) - A New York City plainclothes police officer was shot on Saturday and authorities said a suspect was arrested and in custody. The officer, identified by police as Brian Moore, 25, was in surgery at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center about four hours after the shooting, a hospital representative told reporters on Saturday night. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said Moore was "very, very seriously injured." Local media reported that Moore was shot in the face. Police arrested Demetrius Blackwell, 35, who shot at Moore and another officer at about 6:15 p.m. while they were in their car in the borough of Queens, New York Police Commissioner William Bratton told reporters.
