Day of prayer for Baltimore after black man's police custody death Posted: 03 May 2015 06:10 AM PDT By Scott Malone and Ian Simpson BALTIMORE (Reuters) - The city of Baltimore was on Sunday to observe a day of prayer two weeks after a 25-year-old black man died of injuries suffered in police custody in a case that has led to criminal charges against six officers. Freddie Gray's death last month was the latest in a string of police killings of unarmed black men that have sparked anger and protests across the United States over the past year. "What happened in Baltimore sets the bar for prosecutors across the country," said State Senator Catherine Pugh. "It raises the standard of what you can do." After a day of violence on Monday, when rioters torched buildings and cars and threw rocks at police, the mostly black city of 620,000 people has seen a week of largely peaceful demonstrations and marchers that swelled into the thousands of people on Friday and Saturday after charges were brought. |

Baltimore has seen days of protests over alleged police racism and excessive force following the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray who was in police custody. A spontaneous street party of thousands of people erupted in Baltimore during the day Saturday a day after charges were announced against the officers involved in Gray's arrest. The Maryland National Guard said on Twitter it had nearly 3,000 soldiers and airmen ready to help "keep the peace" in the city. |

The officer, identified by police as Brian Moore, 25, was in surgery at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center about four hours after the shooting, a hospital representative told reporters on Saturday night. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said Moore was "very, very seriously injured." Local media reported that Moore was shot in the face. Festive Baltimore rallies in hope after police charged Posted: 02 May 2015 07:01 PM PDT By Scott Malone and Ian Simpson BALTIMORE (Reuters) - Thousands of people took to the streets of Baltimore on Saturday as anger over the death of a young black man turned to hopes for change following swift criminal charges against six police officers. There was an upbeat mood at the march from the housing projects where 25-year-old Freddie Gray was arrested last month to a plaza in front of city hall where the city's chief prosecutor announced charges on Friday ranging from murder to assault in his death. A 10 p.m. curfew was kept in place for Saturday, but police were in uniform rather than riot gear and relaxed marchers snapped selfies with officers as the protest moved to the West Baltimore intersection that was the scene of looting on Monday. Rioting and looting broke out after the funeral for Gray, who died on April 19, a week after suffering a fatal spinal injury while in police custody. |
