Galaxy S8 vs. iPhone 7 Plus and every top Android phone: The ultimate speed test Posted: 17 Apr 2017 11:48 AM PDT What's the fastest smartphone you can buy right now? Is it the brand new Galaxy S8 or LG G6? Is it Apple's iPhone 7 Plus that was released last year? Or is it one of the best Android phones of 2016, such as Google's Pixel or the OnePlus 3T? A thorough speed test compares all five handsets, but the conclusions are hardly surprising. After pitting the Galaxy S8 against the iPhone 7 Plus in a recent speed test, YouTube channel EverythingApplePro added the LG G6, the Pixel, and the OnePlus 3T. Unsurprisingly, iPhone 7 Plus is still the fastest smartphone in the world, outperforming all devices in most tests. The Galaxy S8, with its Snapdragon 835 processor, comes in second and is significantly faster than the LG G6, which was released less than a month ahead of Samsung's new phone. It's interesting to note that all Android phones in the test aside from the Galaxy S8 have Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chips inside. But the LG G6 still appears to trail behind both the Pixel and the OnePlus 3T in this test. The OnePlus 3T, with its 6GB of RAM, is faster than any Android phone when it comes to reloading apps from memory. The iPhone 7 Plus is also quite fast at retrieving apps from memory. In benchmark tests, the iPhone significantly outscores the competition. In other words, there's nothing surprising about this new speed test video. The iPhone 7 is still better and faster than phones that were launched almost half a year after its release. Qualcomm hasn't caught up to Apple's A-series chips yet, and Android device makers simply can't optimize Android like Apple does with iOS. Now, speed test comparisons like this that keep popping up on YouTube are completely unscientific, and they aren't always objective. But channels like EverythingApplePro and others have come up with "standard" procedures which are meant to offer speed tests that are relevant for real-life use. Finally, if you're already using one of these five phones, chances are you're getting a great mobile experience. After all, they are all flagship handsets. You won't notice any differences in performance unless you switch to a different flagship. On the other hand, if you're looking to buy a brand new device and speed is the deciding factor, it's videos like this one that should help settle the matter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OX4JucpvbJM This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Massive manhunt is underway for shooter who broadcast a murder live on Facebook Posted: 17 Apr 2017 10:07 AM PDT Steve Stephens, a 37-year-old Cleveland resident who broadcast himself shooting and killing an elderly man on Easter Sunday is still on the run, with authorities now fearing that he may have fled the immediate area and traveled to one of five surrounding states. As CNN reports, police are warning residents of Ohio as well as Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana, and Michigan to be on the lookout for the 6-foot-1, 244 pound man. Stephens live streamed several different videos on Sunday after his first broadcast showed him finding an elderly man on the sidewalk and then shooting him in the head after a brief verbal exchange. Stephens did not know the victim, 74-year-old Robert Godwin, though the shooter claimed that he was hunting for random people due to troubles with a girlfriend as well as his mother. After approaching him on the street, Stephens asked Godwin to say the woman's name before pulling out a gun and firing. Reports of location data from Stephens' phone suggest he may have traveled northeast from the location of the shooting in Cleveland, with the last "ping" from the phone showing up about 100 miles up the coast of Lake Erie. Stephens made several claims during the Facebook broadcast, including that he had killed over a dozen other individuals, though police say they only have knowledge of one victim, Godwin. Stephens was last seen wearing a grey and blue striped polo shirt and was driving a white Ford Fusion. Authorities are considering Stephens to be armed and dangerous and suggest that anyone who believes they know of his whereabouts do not approach him and contact law enforcement immediately. This is supposedly Apple’s final iPhone 8 design Posted: 17 Apr 2017 09:12 AM PDT Apple's upcoming redesigned iPhone 8 is currently the subject of much debate in the rumor mill. Apple's unreleased iPhones always leak long before they're announced on stage in California, but we're far enough away from the new model's unveiling that there are still plenty of questions that remain unanswered. Will the display feature slightly curved edges or will it be flat? Will the new Touch ID fingerprint scanner be embedded beneath the screen or will Apple unfortunately have to relocate it to the back of the phone due to manufacturing issues. Those are just a few of the big questions we still have, but now a new report out of China claims to have revealed the details surrounding Apple's final iPhone 8 design. What's more, included 3D models based on freshly leaded schematics may be our first look at what Apple has planned for us later this year. Earlier on Monday morning, we shared some leaked schematics that supposedly show Apple's final iPhone 8 design. The schematics in question supposedly came from inside one of Foxconn's factories, and they will presumably be used in the actual manufacturing process that will soon be underway. The same extensive post from Chinese tech blog ifanr also includes what are said to be 3D models of Apple's upcoming new flagship iPhone, which will feature Apple's first new iPhone design in three years. In 2016 and 2015, Apple reused the same iPhone design it first introduced on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus back in 2014. Here's a look at the 3D models posted by ifanr: If the 3D models above are indeed the real deal, then the renders below may be our first look at Apple's finished iPhone 8 design: Two things in particular stand out from the leaked schematics and 3D models. First, if they are accurate, Apple does plan to embed the fingerprint reader into the display. The iPhone 8 will be the first widely available smartphone to include an in-display fingerprint reader, if this leak pans out. The second noteworthy detail is the lack of curved edges on the iPhone 8's screen. A number of solid reports from mainstream media sources have suggested that the sides of the iPhone 8's display would be slightly curved, perhaps following the curvature of the phone's 2.5D glass face. Apart from the unsightly vertical dual camera configuration, this proposed iPhone 8 design would mark an impressive leap beyond Apple's previous designs, which all include massive bezels surrounding the displays. LG and Samsung have both introduced new flagship models with significantly smaller bezels, and Apple is expected to do the same later this year. Cleveland police widen manhunt for Facebook murder suspect Posted: 17 Apr 2017 08:54 AM PDT The manhunt for a murder suspect who police said posted a video of himself on Facebook shooting an elderly man in Cleveland on Sunday widened Monday as authorities asked the public for help and pleaded with the suspect to turn himself in. Police said they have searched "dozens of locations" for the suspect, Steve Stephens, and tried to convince him to turn himself in when they spoke with him on his cell phone on Sunday. "Obviously, this individual is armed and dangerous, and quite frankly at this point he could be in a lot of places," Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge Stephen Anthony told a news conference in Cleveland. China's Ant hikes MoneyGram bid by more a third, beats rival U.S. offer Posted: 17 Apr 2017 07:59 AM PDT By Cate Cadell BEIJING (Reuters) - China's Ant Financial has sweetened its bid for MoneyGram International Inc by over a third, beating a rival offer to gain approval from the U.S. electronic payment firm's board, although it still faces regulatory hurdles. Ant's [ANTFIN.UL] plans to expand globally with the acquisition of one of the biggest firms in remittances hit a major snag last month when U.S.-based Euronet Worldwide Inc made an unsolicited offer and openly lobbied U.S lawmakers, saying Ant's proposal created a national security risk. The new offer handily beats the $15.20 per share proposed by Euronet and represents a 9 percent premium to MoneyGram's last traded share price on Thursday. One day last spring, in one of his series of hospital rooms, his family — a wife and four grown children — argued over what straws they might grasp to build his strength. Pot could help with that, said his son. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Britain's Prince Harry sought counseling more than a decade after mother's death Posted: 17 Apr 2017 06:18 AM PDT Britain's Prince Harry sought counseling in his late twenties to help deal with the grief of losing his mother more than a decade earlier, he told the Telegraph newspaper. Harry, whose mother Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997 when he was just 12, said he had come "very close to a complete breakdown" on several occasions after shutting down his emotions, impacting both his work and his personal life. "So from an emotional side, I was like 'right, don't ever let your emotions be part of anything'." He said his older brother Prince William had encouraged him to seek help and he had been to see "a shrink" several times. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
