Russian investigators confirm Jalilov as man behind metro blast Posted: 04 Apr 2017 02:11 PM PDT Russia's state investigative committee on Tuesday named Akbarzhon Jalilov as the man behind the St Petersburg metro blast, confirming an earlier statement from Kyrgyzstan's security services. The committee said in a statement its investigation had identified Jalilov, whose genetic traces were also found on a bag containing an explosive device. "From the genetic evidence and the surveillance cameras there is reason to believe that the person behind the terrorist act in the train carriage, was the same one who left a bag with an explosive device at the Ploshchad Vosstaniya station," the statement added. Apple is working on a new Mac Pro, but you won’t see it this year Posted: 04 Apr 2017 01:50 PM PDT While mobile and wearable devices have taken center stage at Apple in recent years, computers have been put on the back burner. In that time, Mac users have become increasingly impatient with the company, which is why Apple decided to break with years of tradition and invite a group of writers to an office building on its campus to explain what it had in store for the Mac in the coming months and years.
John Gruber of Daring Fireball has perhaps the most comprehensive report of the conversation, in which Phil Schiller revealed that Apple was in the process of "completely rethinking the Mac Pro." Apple's pricey desktop computer was last updated in 2013, but there is currently a team at Apple working on both a new Mac Pro and a new pro display. But in order for the team to build something worthwhile, it'll need more than a year. In other words, even though Apple is announcing the new Mac Pro now, it won't arrive in 2017. Pro consumers will have to wait until at least 2018 to get their hands on new Mac Pro hardware, but in the meantime, Apple is going to release two updated models of the current Mac Pro this week. You'll pay $2,999 for the model featuring a 6-core Intel Xeon processor, dual AMD FirePro D500 GPUs and 16GB of RAM, and $3,999 for the model with an 8-core processor and dual D700 GPUs. In addition to the Mac Pro, Schiller and SVP Craig Federighi also revealed that new iMacs would launch this year, geared toward the pro market as well. When asked about whether the company is aware of the fact that many Mac users have begun to lose faith in Apple's commitment to Macs, Schiller said this:
Apple is in the business of letting its products speak for themselves. It shares new phones, tablets and computers when they're ready to launch, expecting its fans to jump on board. Whether or not this represents a new path for Apple or is simply a stopgap to appease irritated Mac users remains to be seen, but it's a good sign for Apple fans who depend on professional Mac hardware for work and play. Outrage as Syria 'chemical attack' kills dozens in rebel-held town Posted: 04 Apr 2017 11:31 AM PDT A suspected chemical attack in rebel-held northwestern Syria killed dozens of civilians including children and left many more sick and gasping on Tuesday, causing widespread outrage. The attack on the town of Khan Sheikhun killed at least 58 civilians and saw dozens suffering respiratory problems and symptoms including vomiting, fainting and foaming at the mouth, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said. Senate Republican leader starts clock ticking to showdown on Gorsuch Posted: 04 Apr 2017 10:56 AM PDT Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said on Tuesday he would soon file a motion seeking to cut off an expected Democratic filibuster of Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, setting the clock ticking toward a showdown vote later in the week. The motion would set up a vote, likely on Thursday, to try to cut off the filibuster, which would require a super-majority of 60 votes in the 100-seat Senate to end debate on Gorsuch's nomination and move to a final up or down vote on confirmation. Enough Democrats have agreed to support a filibuster to block a final vote under current Senate rules, and McConnell is expected to seek a rule change to get the nomination approved by Friday. Suiting up the Swiss Guard: Austrian blacksmiths practice vanishing craft for Vatican guards Posted: 04 Apr 2017 10:36 AM PDT Austrian blacksmiths who produce ceremonial suits of armor for the Vatican's Swiss Guards are close to the end of their current deal to do so, and say supplying the suits will not be an issue for many years to come. One of the drawbacks of the Swiss Guards' medieval uniforms is that the craftsmanship needed to make them is disappearing. Faced with an aged stock in need of replacement, the Guards turned to brothers Johann and Georg Schmidberger—the fifth generation to run the family blacksmith's business in the Austrian town of Molln—to provide them with 80 suits of armor covering the torso and arms. Afghanistan sacks top generals over brazen hospital attack Posted: 04 Apr 2017 09:28 AM PDT Afghanistan on Tuesday sacked 12 army officers including two generals for negligence over an insurgent attack on the country's largest military hospital, which pointed to a spectacular intelligence failure. Gunmen disguised as doctors stormed Sardar Daud Khan hospital in Kabul last month, with multiple surviving staff telling AFP that insiders including two interns were among the attackers. The military head of intelligence and the official in charge of medical support were among those who have been dismissed and will face prosecution, the defence ministry said. Tesla, Google, and Uber are all losing the self-driving car race Posted: 04 Apr 2017 08:48 AM PDT If you see a headline about self-driving car tech, chances are great that it's a story about Tesla, Uber, or Google, but mindshare doesn't always match up with reality and a new study focusing on what companies are leading the charge in automated vehicles puts seasoned carmakers firmly in the driver's seat. The study, which was conducted by Navigant, declares Ford, GM, Daimler, and Renault-Nissan to be the current leaders in automated vehicle technology, with Silicon Valley stars like Uber and Tesla still trying to catch up.
The study looked at a number of criteria in order to give each company a ranking based on two overall factors: strategy and execution. The combination of those two scores produced the final rankings chart you see above, along with the ranking list: Leaders
Contenders
Challengers
Ford, as you might expect, was quite happy to be placed number one on the list, and company Executive VP and CTO Raj Nair took to Medium to put the study into perspective. Nair highlights the fact that Navigant's research takes a big-picture approach in determining not just what companies are leading in technology development such as sensor advancements and AI, but also the capability of the companies to actually bring self-driving cars to the public en masse. In short, just because a company like Google or Uber can build a suite of self-driving software and a sensor array, that doesn't mean those innovations will ever actually be adopted on a level the general public will benefit from. EPA head Scott Pruitt may have broken integrity rules by denying global warming Posted: 04 Apr 2017 07:22 AM PDT Well, this is a new one. Scott Pruitt, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is under investigation by his own agency for misstating the basic scientific consensus on human-caused global warming. Turns out that providing misguiding scientific information to the public isn't a cool thing to do, after all — even in the Trump administration. SEE ALSO: Looking for hope on climate change under Trump? Cities are where the action is. EPA administrator Scott Pruitt is fast becoming one of the most controversial of President Donald Trump's cabinet picks. He is leading the push to unravel the Obama administration's landmark climate change policies while overseeing a historic downsizing of the agency he runs. Global average surface temperatures in 2016 (top line) compared to other years. Image: NASA GISS But Pruitt may have crossed a legal line when, during an interview on March 9 with CNBC's "Squawk Box" morning show, he denied the reality of human-caused climate change, contradicting findings published on his own agency's website. "I think that measuring with precision human activity on the climate is something very challenging to do and there's tremendous disagreement about the degree of impact, so no, I would not agree that it's a primary contributor to the global warming that we see," Pruitt said, when asked if he thinks carbon dioxide emissions are the main "control knob" on the planet's climate. "But we don't know that yet, as far as ... we need to continue the debate and continue the review and the analysis," he said. Pruitt's comments put him at odds with the conclusions of his own agency's climate scientists, who have found that carbon dioxide emissions endanger public health and welfare. At the urging of the Sierra Club, the EPA's scientific integrity official is reviewing Pruitt's comments to see if they violate the agency's scientific integrity policy, which requires that all agency employees — including political appointees like Pruitt — "communicate with honesty, integrity, and transparency." The policy also states that policy makers "... Shall not knowingly misrepresent, exaggerate, or downplay areas of scientific uncertainty associated with policy decisions." President Donald J. Trump, left, is greeted by EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt on March 28, 2017. Image: REX/Shutterstock While there is debate within the scientific community about the specific impacts and severity of global warming, there is virtually no daylight between climate scientists regarding why the world is warming in the first place, let alone carbon dioxide's leading role in causing it. In requesting an agency review into Pruitt's CNBC interview the Sierra Club wrote in a March 14 letter: "Coming from the head of EPA in a major public forum, these statements undermine and delegitimize established climate science. They represent a significant loss of scientific integrity at the agency." The EPA has not specified an end date for the investigation, but said the matter could be referred back to the Office of the Inspector General, who could take disciplinary action. "Administrator Pruitt makes no apologies for having a candid dialogue about climate science and commonsense regulations that will protect our environment, without creating unnecessary regulatory burdens that kill jobs," EPA spokeswoman Liz Bowman said in response to an initial Reuters story on the inquiry. "Differing views and opinions on scientific and technical matters is a legitimate and necessary part of EPA's decision-making process, which is consistent with EPA's scientific integrity policy that was in place even during the Obama administration," she added. According to the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations has contributed the most to global warming since 1750, when accounting for other greenhouse gases and natural factors that influence the climate, such as volcanoes and solar variability. Last year was the warmest on record since 1880, beating out 2015 for the title. Not coincidentally, carbon dioxide levels are at their highest in all of human history.
