Intel and AMD are going to war with next-gen CPUs Posted: 16 May 2017 01:12 PM PDT For the longest time, Intel has been the only name that matters when it comes to the processor inside your PC. AMD, the company that used to provide a genuine challenge, just couldn't produce CPUs of the same quality for a comparable price. But with its latest generation of Ryzen chips, AMD changed the game. They don't blow Intel's CPUs out of the water, but they provide real competition for the first time in a long time. The result from Intel has been swift, and awesome: a rumored new line of super-high-end CPUs, with technology improvements that should trickle down to everyone's laptop.
Yesterday, details leaked about an upcoming Intel CPU aimed firmly at professionals and seriously hardcore home users. It will be a 12-core processor, codenamed the Core i9, with a 150W TDP. That puts it far above the current top of the line, which is Intel's Core i7 range. The Core i7 has been the highest-performing consumer chip for a long time. Although Intel does make more powerful Xeon processors for professional and server use, the designation of Core iX normally means it's aimed at a more consumer-level build. Shaking up years of tradition with a Core i9 would indicate that Intel's starting to see the need to reclaim its crown as the manufacturer of the most powerful CPUs. But that won't be easy. Hours after the Core i9 leak, details about a challenger processor came out. Codenamed Ryzen 9, it's rumored to have 16 cores, 32 threads, and a clock speed of 3.5GHz in normal mode, boostable to 3.9GHz. Just on paper, it sounds like AMD could challenge Intel, especially for non-gaming applications that rely more heavily on parallel processing. In the past, a raw number of cores hasn't corresponded well to usable power, but AMD's latest generation of Ryzen CPUs have offered great performance at a price much lower than what Intel can currently charge. Prices and release dates aren't out yet, but the Computex trade show is coming up at the end of the month. Assuming that Intel and AMD both release full details there, these CPUs could be in computers shipping this summer. It's a good time to be a PC user. Donald Trump's impeachment 'a question of when', says former Labor Secretary Posted: 16 May 2017 12:57 PM PDT Donald Trump's impeachment is a matter of "when", a former Clinton administration official has claimed, saying "the question is not whether there are grounds to impeach". Robert Reich, the Democrat President's Labor Secretary, said on Twitter Mr Trump would be brought down when Republicans "put loyalty to America ahead of loyalty to their party". In a column for Newsweek, the political commentator claimed the President could be guilty of "obstruction of justice" over his handling of James Comey's firing. Oddities in WannaCry ransomware puzzle cybersecurity researchers Posted: 16 May 2017 12:40 PM PDT By Jeremy Wagstaff SINGAPORE (Reuters) - The WannaCry malware that spread to more than 100 countries in a few hours is throwing up several surprises for cybersecurity researchers, including how it gained its initial foothold, how it spread so fast and why the hackers are not making much money from it. Some researchers have found evidence they say could link North Korea with the attack, but others are more cautious, saying that the first step is shedding light on even the most basic questions about the malware itself. For one thing, said IBM Security's Caleb Barlow, researchers are still unsure exactly how the malware spread in the first place. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Almost 80% of Americans want a special prosecutor to investigate Donald Trump, poll finds Posted: 16 May 2017 11:42 AM PDT Almost four in five Americans believe an independent investigator should be appointed to look into Donald Trump's alleged links with Russia, a new poll has found. A massive 78 per cent of people want a special prosecutor to handle the investigation that is currently being led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), whose director James Comey was fired by the US president last week. In contrast, only 15 per cent want Congress to lead the probe. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

HTC told us why the HTC U11 doesn’t have a bezel-less display Posted: 16 May 2017 10:11 AM PDT In the early hours of the morning while most people in the United States were sound asleep, HTC unveiled its next-generation flagship smartphone. The HTC U11 made its debut in Taipei, emerging as a solid contender to other 2017 flagship smartphones (at least, on paper, but we'll discuss that in a separate post). The U11 sports a unique design with what HTC refers to as "liquid design language," characterized by smooth lines and mirror-like colored finishes that really catch light in a beautiful way. But not all of the defining elements of HTC's U11 design are so impressive. In 2017, every major smartphone maker is moving toward a new display design that does away with the large bezels surrounding a phone's screen. LG's G6 achieved a screen-to-body ratio in the high seventies, Samsung managed an 83% screen-to-body ratio on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, and Apple's upcoming iPhone 8 is expected to be even more impressive. But HTC's new U11 sports the same old look we've seen for a decade now. Why isn't HTC on board with this exciting new trend? BGR got the answer straight from the horse's mouth. If you checked out our HTC U11 hands-on preview earlier this morning, you know how impressive this new flagship phone is. Available for pre-order right now on Amazon, the HTC U11 is one of the sleekest and most stylish smartphones we've ever seen. At least, on the back of the phone. The face of HTC's new flagship smartphone is decidedly dated, featuring large spaces above and below the device's rectangular 5.5-inch Super LCD 5 display. The U11 also still has an oblong home button beneath the screen, which is something that Samsung did away with on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. We also expect Apple to ditch the home button on its upcoming iPhone 8. So, why isn't HTC pushing its smartphone design forward on the front of the U11, as it did around back? The answer is actually fairly simple. In a closed-door meeting ahead of the HTC U11's unveiling, an HTC executive told BGR that the company is indeed investigating newer smartphone trends like bezel-less displays and dual-lens camera systems. In the case of displays, however, HTC is at a clear disadvantage. LG's G6 and Samsung's Galaxy S8 both have screens with barely any border around them, but LG and Samsung also both have display divisions. Since they make their own screens, they also have the ability to tailor those screens to their specific needs. HTC, of course, does not have a display division. Instead, it looks to other companies to supply smartphone components such as displays. At this point you might be thinking about Apple. The iPhone 8 is expected to have an edgeless screen, and yet Apple doesn't make its own display panels. Of course, Apple is uniquely positioned to work with its suppliers more closely than other smartphone companies. Because the company accounts for so much of its suppliers' business, these suppliers build components specifically to meet Apple's needs. HTC doesn't quite have that kind of leverage. In the future as these new borderless display panels become more widely available, and as the cost comes down, we're likely to see new HTC phones with better screen-to-body ratios. In the meantime, certain aspects of the U11's design are inevitably stuck in the past. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

"As President I wanted to share with Russia (at an openly scheduled W.H. meeting) which I have the absolute right to do, facts pertaining...to terrorism and airline flight safety," he wrote. Apple to discontinue iPad mini as device gets squeezed from both ends Posted: 16 May 2017 08:40 AM PDT First introduced in 2012, Apple's iPad mini was a welcome alternative to the much larger, thicker, and heavier 9.7-inch iPad. There was no 5.5-inch iPhone Plus, so the iPad mini made a great choice for light reading and effortless web browsing, email, and gaming. The market doesn't stand still, however, and we're now looking at a redesigned iPad Pro to be launched this summer that should offer everything the current 9.7-inch iPad features, but in a smaller footprint with a larger 10.5-inch display. On the other side, there's the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus, which is large enough to negate the need for a tablet for many users. The device you take everywhere, that's always with you, that has the best camera, and that has everything else you need. The device that you already own. Therein lies the problem, and that's why we have heard from a source close to Apple that the iPad mini is being phased out. Not one to ever be shy about disrupting the company's own lineup, our source beats the Apple drum and states that there's "fierce cannibalism of our own products" and that the iPad mini has just been "sized out of its own category." We're also told that the numbers are "very clear" as far as sales are concerned, which is most likely the biggest reason the company plans to eliminate the littlest iPad. It's not clear if Apple plans to continue selling the iPad mini for a period of time without further updates, or if it will pull the device at some point in the near future. Separately, while not a surprise, we're told Apple plans to share "record numbers" in the company's updates at WWDC 2017 that were not discussed in the recent earnings conference call. Additionally, the company's strategy concerning stock buybacks will continue. This could mean the company might leverage stock to help fund acquisitions of small and large companies instead of having to pay cash, which Apple doesn't have much access to since most of its cash hoard is held overseas. Apple has resorted to issuing debt largely to fund dividends paid to shareholders due to the very issue of non-repatriated cash. If Apple is confident about the company's long-term outlook, then it's smart and less expensive to buy back stock at the current market value and then use that stock as part of a purchase strategy, instead of trading higher value stock in the future for the same transaction. U.S. court rejects Georgia inmate's 'firing squad' motion Posted: 16 May 2017 08:21 AM PDT A U.S. appeals court has rejected a Georgia death row inmate's last-minute appeal to postpone his Tuesday execution by lethal injection and instead compel the state to use a firing squad, which his lawyers claim would be less painful for him. J.W. Ledford, 45, has spent about a quarter century on death row after being convicted of the 1992 robbery and murder of a doctor who lived near him. Lawyers for Ledford said he wants to be executed by firing squad because a drug he takes for nerve pain would lead to an "excruciating death" under Georgia's current lethal injection protocol.
