This ultra-thin $20 case adds wireless charging to any iPhone Posted: 08 May 2017 01:52 PM PDT Apple's upcoming new iPhone 8 is going to introduce a number of exciting new features that have never been seen before on an iPhone. The most talked-about addition is the new OLED display that will barely have any bezel around it, but that's hardly the end of the story. The feature I'm most excited for is the convenience of wireless charging, which means never having to fumble with a cable or Lightning plug again. Of course, you don't need to wait for the iPhone 8 to add wireless charging to your iPhone. Check out the Nillkin Magic Case, which is available for the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6/6s, and iPhone 6/6s Plus. Here are some highlights from the product page:

First evacuations from Damascus rebel district Posted: 08 May 2017 01:32 PM PDT Syrian rebels and their families began evacuating from a district of Damascus for the first time on Monday, bringing the government closer to recapturing all of the capital. The evacuation began days after regime backers Russia and Iran and rebel supporter Turkey signed a deal to implement "de-escalation zones" where the government and opposition will halt hostilities. Foreign Minister Walid Muallem on Monday rejected any role for the United Nations or international forces in monitoring the zones. Apple is now worth $800 billion for the first time ever Posted: 08 May 2017 12:23 PM PDT Freshman economics students will tell you that something is only "worth" whatever other people are willing to pay for it. In the case of Apple Inc, that means the company is now valued at $800 billion, a new all-time high for the company. But according to analysts, Apple could be on track to break $1 trillion if it plays its cards right.
Apple's stock briefly surpassed $153.44 per share today. With Apple's 5.214 billion shares on the market, that means the company's market cap is greater than $800 billion. The new high comes just weeks after Apple blew through $750 billion, a milestone at the time. Anticipation surrounding Apple is reaching a frenzy currently, as a mix of factors are pushing investors ever higher. The iPhone 8, widely expected to launch late this year or early 2018, is predicted to start a "super-cycle" of upgrading, which will make Apple a brand-new wave of profit. Wider economic factors unrelated to the product lineup are also in Apple's favor. Apple has some $250 billion in cash, mostly held overseas, which it doesn't return to the US thanks to the 35% tax that would impose. President Trump, however, has hinted at the possibility of a one-time tax break to encourage companies to bring their cash back to the US. A break, expected to be around 10%, would enable Apple to return cash to the US, and use it to either invest, or return to shareholders. Either scenario would be favorable for investors, hence the excitement. Finally, a general rally in the US stock market is also playing in Apple's favor. The NASDAQ 100 closed at an all-time high last week. Despite the optimism, there's still some notes for concern. Apple's $250 billion in overseas cash is tempered by over $100 billion in debt that it has in the US. Since it can't use any of its overseas cash, it has been using debt to conduct its share buyback program, invest in new technologies, and issue dividends. Mattis: US reviewing Syria safe zones but has many questions Posted: 08 May 2017 12:08 PM PDT COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said the U.S. owes it to the people of Syria to take a close look at the Russian proposal to create several "safe zones" in Syria. But Mattis also said the plan poses many unanswered questions, including whether it would be effective. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Here's What VantageScore's New Credit-Scoring Formula Means for Your Wallet Posted: 08 May 2017 11:12 AM PDT The way some credit scores are calculated is about to change -- and it could mean that bigger changes are on the way soon. VantageScore, the nation's second-most-prominent credit-scoring firm (behind long-time industry leader FICO), announced changes to its scoring formula last month. The most important change is the inclusion of so-called "trending data" in the formula, and it is likely the start of something big. Leak reveals a new version of the Galaxy S8 that’s about to launch Posted: 08 May 2017 10:55 AM PDT We can't see the future, but if had to make a guess, we would say that the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will be the hottest Android smartphones of the year until the late summer. At that point, Samsung is expected to one-up its S8 design with an all new Galaxy Note 8 that features an even better screen-to-body ratio and hopefully a battery that doesn't explode. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ feature a gorgeous new look with a nearly bezel-less Super AMOLED screen and curved sides on the front and back. They look amazing, they feel perfect in the hand, and they're the most powerful Android phones that have ever been released. There is one drawback to Samsung's hot new Galaxy S8 design though, and now it looks like an upcoming new version of the phone will address this potential shortcoming. As we covered in our in-depth Galaxy S8 review, no phone has ever featured a more stunning design — and that includes iPhones. It truly is as close to perfection as any company has come in terms of look and feel. That gorgeous design comes at a cost, however: if you drop a Galaxy S8 that's not housed in a protective case, it's probably done for. Remember, no phone has ever performed worse in SquareTrade's drop tests. For people who want the Galaxy S8's beautiful display and the phone's impressive power, but who also want a phone that's far less fragile, it looks like Samsung will soon have just the thing for you. As the company has done in the past, new leaks suggest Samsung is working on a ruggedized version of the Galaxy S8 called the Galaxy S8 Active. https://twitter.com/rquandt/status/860237447669698562 Blogger Roland Quandt posted two finds on Twitter that suggest Samsung is getting close to launching its new Galaxy S8 Active. As seen in the tweet above, Quandt found what is believed to be the S8 Active's model number (SM-G892A) in a user agent string. Then, he notes that the same model number was listed on the Netflix website as part of the Galaxy S8 family of devices. That page on the Netflix site has since been updated to remove mention of the SM-G892A. There's no word as far as exactly when we can expect Samsung to announce its new Galaxy S8 Active, but it appears as though an unveiling isn't far off. Microsoft just killed your Surface Pro 5 dreams Posted: 08 May 2017 09:16 AM PDT Days after unveiling a Microsoft laptop with a weird choice of palm rest material and a new version of the Windows 10 operating system aimed at the education market, Microsoft announced that it'll host a second event this month, dedicated to different hardware. At the time, we thought the May 23rd event would bring us news of the Surface Pro 5 laptop, an update we've been waiting for a while now. But it turns out that's not happening this month. In an interview with CNET, Microsoft's vice president for Surface Computing Panos Panay suggested that you may have to wait a lot longer than just a few days to see an upgrade. "If people don't want to buy our Pro 4 at this time, that's OK," Panay said when asked whether people should buy the Pro 4 or wait for a successor. "What I'm super, super sure of is that the people using a Pro 4 have a product that's going to be competitive for five years." That doesn't sound too reassuring. Will there be any upgrades, CNET asked? "When it's meaningful, and the change is right, we'll put it on market," the extremely enthusiastic Surface creator said. "Meaningful change isn't necessarily a hardware change, which is what a lot of people look for. They're like, 'Where's the latest processor?' That's not what I mean. I'm looking for an experiential change that makes a huge difference in product line." "You'll see that same meaningful impact when Pro 5, or Pro Next hits the market," he said, adding "there's no such thing as a Pro 5." This comment seems to indicate that Microsoft might not be looking to make a Surface Pro 5 device anytime soon. Or if it is working on one, it might not call it the "Surface Pro 5." So what is Microsoft announcing in a couple of weeks? The company will talk about what's next, and it involves hardware. Is it AR/VR or mixed reality? Is it the strange Surface Phone that doesn't look like a phone? Is it something completely different, like Cortana-based Amazon Echo rivals? We don't have very long to wait before we find out. The iPhone 8 design everybody hates is back Posted: 08 May 2017 08:44 AM PDT There are two kinds of iPhone 8 design leaks out in the wild right now, and they're fairly similar except for one critical feature: the Touch ID fingerprint sensor. A new report indicates that Apple may be forced to go with the safer approach, which unfortunately just so happens to be the one that everybody hates. Apple wants to integrate the Touch ID sensor within the layers of the new OLED screen, various reports have said, but the nascent technology may not be ready in time for this year's flagship iPhone 8. Hong Kong-based equity research firm CLSA wrote in a note to investors seen by MacRumors that Apple may end up placing the sensor on the back of the handset instead. "iPhone to ditch fingerprint sensor? We don't think so," CLSA analysts Sebastian Hou and Brian Chen wrote. "Both Samsung and Apple tried to enable in-display fingerprint sensing on full-screen OLED phones in 2017, but their optical tech seems immature and the major iPhone 8 bottleneck." The note continued, "Some thus speculate the fingerprint sensor will be removed and replaced by 3D sensing. Our latest supply chain checks indicate the iPhone 8 will still have the sensor given security, user-friendliness, and a need for payments infrastructure, but there is a high chance it will be on the back like Samsung's Galaxy S8." CLSA went ahead and created a diagram of the iPhone 8, as seen above. The company believes Apple will use an all-screen design for the handset, and that it'll feature an advanced 3D face recognition system on the front as well as a vertical dual-lens camera on the back. The schematic above looks similar to some of the recent leaks that hit the web. Designer Benjamin Geskin created a concept iPhone 8 based on the image above. Here it is — and let's just hope that it's way off base, because the front of the phone is hideous at the top, not to mention the fact that it would introduce several new manufacturing hurdles: A report on Monday said the iPhone 8 will not be delayed, although it made no mention of the phone's design or the Touch ID sensor's location. Phil Schiller hints that Apple’s Siri-based Amazon’s Echo rival might feature a display Posted: 08 May 2017 07:49 AM PDT It's been a few years since we've seen Apple enter a brand new hardware category, but that may change in just a few weeks once WWDC gets underway in early June. According to a research note from Ming-Chi Kuo that was circulated widely last week, Apple has been busy developing a Siri-based product designed to go head-to-head with Amazon's Echo. Even better, Kuo says there's a 50% chance Apple will introduce the device at Apple's upcoming developer conference. The device will reportedly incorporate Beats audio technology and will deliver premium-level acoustics.
As Kuo noted in a research report obtained by MacRumors, the device will feature "one woofer and seven tweeters and computing power similar to iPhone 6/6S." And while not much else is known about the rumored product, Apple executive Phil Schiller may have recently shed some light on what type of differentiating features the device will bring to the table. During a recent interview with Gadgets 360, Schiller was asked to share his thoughts on devices like the Amazon Echo and Google Home. While not singling out one device in particular, Schiller intimated that both devices were nothing special before seemingly implying that adding a screen interface to a smart speaker system might be a smart move. Schiller specifically noted that while voice-based intelligent assistants can be helpful, he referenced a few examples where having a screen interface serves a complementary purpose.
Schiller obviously didn't confirm anything, but it's more than a bit interesting that when asked about a product like the Amazon Echo, Schiller began waxing poetic on how important screens are, adding that the "role of the screen is gonna remain very important to all of this." Interestingly enough, images of an unreleased Amazon Echo device with a full-fledged display emerged last week. Rumor has it that this unnamed device will be positioned as the premier product within Amazon's burgeoning Alexa-based lineup. https://twitter.com/evleaks/status/860568968943341570 This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

New Hamas chief latest step toward international acceptance: analysts Posted: 08 May 2017 06:41 AM PDT Ismail Haniya's election as Hamas chief is another sign that the Islamist movement is seeking to soften its image and show it can offer a viable alternative to Mahmud Abbas, analysts said. Considered a terrorist group by the United States and the European Union, Hamas has taken steps in recent days that are seen as a bid to ease its international isolation while not alienating hardliners within the movement. Before announcing Haniya as its new leader on Saturday, replacing Khaled Meshaal, who completed his maximum two terms, the movement that controls the Gaza Strip released a new policy document last week somewhat easing its stance on Israel.
