Trump seeks to slash $3.6 trillion of spending in austere budget Posted: 23 May 2017 01:37 PM PDT By Roberta Rampton WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump wants lawmakers to cut $3.6 trillion in government spending over the next decade, taking aim in an austere budget unveiled on Tuesday at healthcare and food assistance programs for the poor while boosting the military. Republicans who control the U.S. Congress - and the federal purse strings - will decide whether to make politically sensitive cuts, and the proposal is very unlikely to be approved in its current form. Although it is not expected to survive on Capitol Hill, the proposal puts numbers on Trump's vision of the role of government: a budget with radical cuts to government assistance to lower-income Americans. High court ruling may give voter rights groups a strong tool Posted: 23 May 2017 12:42 PM PDT RALEIGH, N.C. Elon Musk told Donald Trump what to do about the Paris Climate Agreement Posted: 23 May 2017 11:50 AM PDT The Trump administration may finally be nearing a decision on whether to stay in the Paris Climate Agreement. Now we know that visionary businessman Elon Musk, who founded SpaceX, Tesla, and a new, mysterious tunnel-building firm called the Boring Company, is talking to President Donald Trump about what to do regarding this agreement. Given his role in alternative energy, it's no surprise that Musk is in favor of the 2016 treaty. SEE ALSO: Elon Musk's Boring Company isn't waiting any longer The Paris agreement was negotiated under former president Barack Obama. And for the first time in decades of climate diplomacy, all nations agreed to take steps to cut emissions of planet-warming greenhouse gases based on their own timetables. If the U.S. were to withdraw from the treaty, it's likely to have global repercussions, potentially encouraging other nations to relax their emissions reduction commitments or leave the pact entirely. In a tweet on Monday night, Musk said he has spoken with Trump and is urging him to stay in the agreement. @BigDAK54 I spoke directly with The President three weeks ago about Paris. Many others have too. Cautiously optimistic of a positive decision. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 22, 2017 Musk is part of Trump's business advisory council, for which he has received considerable criticism. He says he is remaining on it as a way to ensure that a diversity of views on particular matters, including climate change, make it to Trump's desk. Various advisors have been vying for the president's ear on this landmark climate deal, from the secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, to chief strategist Steve Bannon. Some observers think the president will announce his decision about the Paris agreement later this week at the Group of 7 major industrialized nations' summit in Sicily. While there, the U.S. will come under pressure from world leaders like German Chancellor Angela Merkel and new French President Emmanuel Macron to act on global warming, as it is a clear priority for other major industrialized nations. Trump, for his part, has called climate change a hoax, vowed during the campaign to "cancel" the Paris agreement, and on Tuesday proposed a federal budget that zeroes out funding for international climate change assistance programs. The budget also slashes spending for U.S. climate research at the Environmental Protection Agency, Energy Department, and other agencies. South Korea fires at suspected drone at border with North amid missile crisis Posted: 23 May 2017 10:55 AM PDT By Ju-min Park and Christine Kim SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's military fired warning shots at a suspected drone from North Korea on Tuesday amid tension over Pyongyang's latest missile test which drew international condemnation and a warning from China. The incursion came with tension already high on the Korean peninsula after the North's test-launch of a ballistic missile test on Sunday which Pyongyang said proved advances in its pursuit of building a nuclear-tipped weapon that can hit U.S. targets. The United States has been trying to persuade China, North Korea's lone major ally, to do more to rein in North Korea, which has conducted dozens of missile launches and tested two nuclear bombs since the start of last year, in defiance of U.N. Security Council sanctions and resolutions. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Flynn declines Senate subpoena in Russia probe Posted: 23 May 2017 10:38 AM PDT By Patricia Zengerle and Warren Strobel WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn declined on Monday to comply with a subpoena from the Senate Intelligence Committee as it investigates possible Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election. Flynn invoked his Fifth Amendment constitutional protection against self-incrimination, according to a letter to the Senate committee from his attorney, which was seen by Reuters. The retired lieutenant general is a key witness in the Russia probe, which has roiled the first months of President Donald Trump's presidency with a spate of negative news reports. The Trump administration's Iran policy is dangerous and flawed | Emma Ashford Posted: 23 May 2017 08:51 AM PDT Donald Trump's visit to Saudi Arabia was a huge success. The Saudis wisely pandered to the new president's foibles, rolling out the red carpet for a lavish celebration. Pushing back on Tehran allows Trump to symbolically break with Barack Obama's policies and is popular among congressional Republicans, but it is also dangerous, with the potential to undermine the nuclear deal, slow the fight against Isis, and embroil the United States more deeply in parochial regional struggles. This is what Apple’s newest iPad might look like Posted: 23 May 2017 07:41 AM PDT Apple's WWDC 2017 is getting closer, which means we're soon going to learn more details about iOS 11 and the next major macOS update. But that's not the only exciting thing coming out of the event. Many reports claim new hardware will be unveiled during the keynote, including a brand new iPad Pro model that will join the 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch versions. And now we have more images that show its purported design. We already saw a bunch of leaked images earlier this week that showed cases for the 10.5-inch iPad Pro. Since then, the same leaker (Benjamin Geskin) posted a bunch of additional renders on Twitter that showcase what could be the final design of the tablet. From the looks of it, the 10.5-inch iPad Pro will have the same design you expect from the iPad. However, this model will have reduced side bezels, and it looks like the top and bottom bezels might also be smaller than those on the 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch versions. https://twitter.com/VenyaGeskin1/status/866925700749692928 The home button is still in the picture, so don't get excited about an iPad Pro without a home button. That's going to be a signature feature of the iPhone 8, one that requires sophisticated technology, so it might be some time before we see Apple bring this design decision to the iPad line. Geskin also shared images of a mockup for case makers, which you can see below: https://twitter.com/VenyaGeskin1/status/866926219903860736 Finally, Geskin updated his 3D renders based on the leaks, which we've also included here: https://twitter.com/VenyaGeskin1/status/866937331869208576 The 10.5-inch iPad Pro is already in production, a report from China claims. Should Apple launch it at WWDC in June, it's likely that it'll hit stores soon within the following weeks. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
