Posted: 24 May 2017 12:57 PM PDT Donald Trump's budget director has faced fire from Democrats as he attempted to defend the President's budget proposal – which would slash federal spending on social safety-net programmes by more than $1 trillion (£77.2bn) over the next 10 years. During a House of Representatives budget committee hearing, Democrats slammed Mr Trump's budget as "cruel" and "immoral", while most Republicans praised the President's efforts to curb federal spending. The President wants legislators to cut at least $610bn (£471bn) from the Medicaid – a healthcare programme for the poor – and more than $192bn (£148bn) from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Snap), the modern version of food stamps – as well as several other initiatives. Gloves off as Trump heads to Vatican Posted: 24 May 2017 12:24 PM PDT Billionaire President Donald Trump heads to the Vatican on Wednesday to meet man-of-the-poor Pope Francis, with all eyes on whether they will end their sparring to find common ground. The two leaders have been at odds over issues from migration to climate change, staking out starkly opposing positions through the media, most notably in 2016 while Trump was campaigning for the US presidency. During his campaign, Trump evoked the spectre of an IS attack on the Vatican, saying that "if and when" it happens "the pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been president". Syrian army says senior Islamic State militant killed Posted: 24 May 2017 10:57 AM PDT The Syrian army said on Wednesday it had killed Islamic State's military commander in Syria during operations in the north of the country, where the Russian-backed government forces are seizing more territory back from the jihadist group. If confirmed, this would represent a major blow against Islamic State (IS) ahead of an attack which the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) - an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters - are expected to launch against the jihadists in their stronghold of Raqqa city. A Syrian military source told Reuters the IS commander, Abu Musab al-Masri, had been the group's "minister of war" for Syria. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Retirement Savings Is a Bigger Crisis Than Health Care Posted: 24 May 2017 10:06 AM PDT Everyone talks about how health care is the biggest crisis facing retirees, but unfortunately that crisis takes a distant second to another, far more serious issue. A 2015 National Institute on Retirement Security study found that the median working-age household has just $14,500 in retirement savings -- woefully short of the hundreds of thousands in savings truly needed to retire in the first place. One of the authors of the 2015 NIRS study, Ilana Boivie, agrees that the $14,500 figure is startlingly low. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Ivanka Trump's family leave plan is a fig leaf for her father's worst policies | Lucia Graves Posted: 24 May 2017 09:51 AM PDT Ivanka acts as if she were her father's better angel and would have us draw a bright line between Trump's views and her own. Ivanka's paid family leave program in Trump's 2018 budget is the perfect metaphor for her role in the administration: it serves as a fig leaf for his most oppressive policies. Ivanka has positioned herself as her father's better angel and would have us draw a bright line between Trump's views and her own. Low-income Trump voters to be overwhelmingly hit by President's proposed budget cuts Posted: 24 May 2017 09:34 AM PDT Many supporters of President Donald Trump will be hit hardest by his administration's new budget – with $3.6 trillion proposed to be slashed from government spending over the next decade, cutting support for programmes that low-income families rely upon. Mr Trump wants legislators to cut at least $610 billion from Medicaid and more than $192 billion from food stamps over a decade. Such deep cuts to such programmes have been attacked by Democrats and even some Republicans – and they will be tough to defend when Trump officials appear on Capitol Hill on Wednesday to discuss the plan. Trump proposes deep U.S. spending cuts in Mexico, Central America Posted: 24 May 2017 07:29 AM PDT By Gabriel Stargardter MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Tuesday proposed drastically slashing U.S. foreign aid spending in Mexico and Central America, which are struggling with drug violence, graft and poverty that prompts many from the troubled region to migrate north. Trump's austere 2018 budget proposal, which seeks to trim $3.6 trillion from government spending over the next decade and is unlikely to get legislative approval in its current form, envisages steep cuts in most federal departments, but particularly the State Department. Ever since launching his presidential campaign in 2015, Trump has attacked Mexico, threatening to rip up the North American Free Trade Agreement, build a Mexico-funded southern border wall and ramp up deportations of those living without documents in the United States.
