Donald Trump and the First Lady are visiting France to mark Bastille Day after Emmanuel Macron extended an invitation that surprised many after a series of ideological clashes between the two leaders. The President, who praised far-right leader Marine Le Pen during the French election, said the trip would "celebrate and honour" France's national day and a century since the US' entry into the First World War.

Presidential impeachment in the USA: How often has it happened?

Posted: 12 Jul 2017 02:57 PM PDT

Presidential impeachment in the USA: How often has it happened?Donald Trump would be joining a very small presidential club if he was ever to be impeached. Brad Sherman, a Democrat congressman from California, on July 12 became the first to launch official impeachment proceedings - although even he admitted it was a long way away. The embattled president has described calls for his impeachment as "ridiculous", saying he has done nothing to warrant criminal charges. He lashed out after days of political tumult, which culminated in the Justice Department's appointment of Robert Mueller as a special counsel to probe possible ties between Russia and Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. "The entire thing has been a witch hunt and there is no collusion between certainly myself and my campaign - but I can always speak for myself - and the Russians. Zero," Mr Trump said at a press conference. About | Impeachment Asked if he thought he had done anything to warrant criminal charges or impeachment as some on the left have demanded, the Republican president replied: "I think it's totally ridiculous." Were the crisis ever to reach impeachment proceedings, history shows it would be far from likely that Mr Trump would be removed from office. Andrew Johnson Andrew Johnson was the first leader to go through the process in 1868. He was charged with breaching the Tenure of Office Act after he removed the US secretary of war, Edwin Stanton, from the cabinet. In the aftermath of the civil war, the Tenure of Office Act stated that a president could not dismiss appointed officials without the consent of Congress.  Johnson believed the legislation was unconstitutional and wanted it to be legally tried in the courts - instead it was the president, himself, who was brought to trial. Andrew Johnson escaped being removed from office by one vote Credit: AP Once the House of Representatives impeached Johnson on February 24, 1868, the case passed to the Senate. Had he been impeached there also, he would have been removed from office. Instead, after a two-month trial in the Senate he was acquitted by a margin of 35 guilty to 19 not guilty - one vote short of the two-thirds needed to convict. He was, therefore, not removed from office and in 1926 the Supreme Court declared that the Tenure of Office Act had been invalid. Bill Clinton The second president to be impeached was Bill Clinton over the extramarital affair he had with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.   On January 26, 1998, Clinton uttered the now infamous denial: "I want to say one thing to the American people; I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky". On August 17, however, he testified before a grand jury - the first time a sitting president had done so - and admitted live on television that he did indeed have an inappropriate relationship with her. Bill Clinton was impeached over the Monica Lewinsky scandal Credit: AP Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives on December 19, 1998, on the grounds of perjury and obstruction of justice. Two other charges – a second perjury charge and a charge of abuse of power – failed to pass in the House. The case then went to trial in the Senate, where, on February 12, 1999,  he was acquitted. A two-thirds vote - 67 senators - were required to remove him from office. In the end, 50 voted to convict him for obstruction of justice and 45 found him guilty of perjury. No Democrats voted to convict him on either charge.  It should be noted that 18 current senators - 11 Republicans and seven Democrats - were in the chamber at the time of Clinton's trial, according to Time. Richard Nixon Richard Nixon, to whom Mr Trump has frequently been compared in recent weeks, would almost certainly have become the third president to be impeached and would likely have been removed from office.  His White House had become engulfed by the Watergate scandal, in which his administration had tried to cover up its involvement in the break in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington. Richard Nixon resigned before he was impeached Credit: AP Impeachment proceedings formally began on February 6, 1974, and, at the end of July, three articles of impeachment against Nixon were approved: for obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and contempt of Congress. Yet the trial never reached the House. With the writing on the wall, Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974, and handed the presidency over to Gerald Ford.   Were Mr Trump to follow his predecessor's example, he would be handing the presidency to Vice President Mike Pence.
