Leader of Afghan IS branch killed in US strike: Pentagon Posted: 14 Jul 2017 02:24 PM PDT US forces have killed the head of the Islamic State group's Afghanistan branch, the Pentagon said Friday, marking the third time in a year the franchise has lost its leader. Abu Sayed was killed in a July 11 strike in Afghanistan's northeastern province of Kunar on the headquarters of IS-Khorasan Province (IS-K), which also killed additional jihadists, the Pentagon said in a statement. "You kill a leader of one of these groups and it sets them back," Pentagon chief Jim Mattis told reporters. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Anti-Trump protests erupt in Paris as President attends Bastille Day rally Posted: 14 Jul 2017 02:08 PM PDT Bastille Day protests threatened to boil over into violence at the end of Donald Trump's visit to Paris, as his opponents took to the streets for the second consecutive day. Mask-wearing demonstrators threw glass bottles and missiles at lines of riot police blocking roads near the French capital's Gare du Nord station, stopping a huge march in its tracks. "No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA," chanted marchers holding "Make The Planet Great Again" signs, shortly after Mr Trump and his entourage left Paris following grand Bastille Day celebrations with Emmanuel Macron. Escaping Russia investigation chaos at the White House, Donald and Melania Trump touch down in Paris Posted: 13 Jul 2017 06:13 PM PDT Donald Trump arrived in Paris on Thursday for a presidential visit filled with Bastille Day pomp and which the White House hopes will offer respite from rolling scandal backing home. Air Force One touched down at Paris' Orly Airport, beginning a 24 hour trip that coincides with France's national day and the 100th anniversary of US involvement in World War I. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 12, 2017 Back home, Mr Trump on Wednesday defended his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr, praising his "transparency" for releasing an email chain about a meeting with a Russian lawyer and again decrying as a political "witch hunt" the row about whether the Kremlin helped him win the White House last November. In London, Berlin, Brussels and Paris, European leaders are wondering how best to handle the US president, whose nationalist "America First" agenda has upended transatlantic relations. Mr Macron hopes to build a relationship with the new occupant of the White House that might enable him to influence US policy or, at the least, help avoid serious strains between the EU and Washington. Trump and Macron share gripping handshake 00:23 There are already tensions over climate change and trade, while Mr Trump was openly critical of the EU last year and snubbed a handshake with German Chancellor Angela Merkel during their first meeting in March. "It's very difficult to play chess with a man whose strategy is a complete mystery and whose only consistency is his pursuit of American national interest," foreign affairs expert Bertrand Badie of Sciences Po university in Paris told AFP. "To imagine that you might change his mind on something is simply mad." The two leaders will dine together at the Jules Verne restaurant up the Eiffel Tower, enjoying stunning views of the French capital along with their wives Melania and Brigitte. Mr Trump and Mr Macron appear to have little in common, with their views at odds on everything from globalisation to immigration. As well as a huge generational gap - Mr Trump at 71 is almost twice Macron's age - there is scant evidence of any overlap of interests in their personal lives. Mr Macron also criticised Mr Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from the global Paris climate change agreement last month and used the American's own slogan against him, saying: "Make our planet great again." Emmanuel Macron jostles his way to the front of G20 photo to stand by Donald Trump 01:38 Mr Macron told regional newspaper Ouest-France on Thursday that Paris and Washington had "an essential point of convergence: fighting terrorism and protecting our vital interests". However, he also lamented "a protectionist tendency (which) has resurfaced in the United States". "I want to defend free and fair trade," he added. onald Trump and first lady Melania kiss on the tarmac in Paris Credit: Carolyn Kaster/AP But sources in the French presidency insist ties are healthy even after a muscular handshake seen as a battle of wills between the two of them when they first met at a NATO summit in May. Doctors, nurses among hundreds charged with defrauding U.S. health programs Posted: 13 Jul 2017 05:37 PM PDT More than 400 people, including doctors and nurses, have been charged with defrauding Medicare and other federal healthcare programs of $1.3 billion, with many accused of illegally distributing opioids and other narcotics, the Justice Department said on Thursday. A total of 412 people, including almost 115 doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, have been charged in the sweeping enforcement action, the biggest ever by the multi-agency Medicare Strike Force, the Justice Department said in a statement. "Too many trusted medical professionals like doctors, nurses and pharmacists have chosen to violate their oaths and put greed ahead of their patients," Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in the statement. Astronomers just discovered the smallest star ever Posted: 13 Jul 2017 04:29 PM PDT We typically think of stars as colossal balls of fusion-driven fire that absolutely dwarf everything else, but researchers just made a discovery that offers a slightly different perspective. A group of scientists from the University of Cambridge have detected a star that is so small, even one of our own planetary neighbors happens to be larger, and it's assumed to be the absolute smallest a star can possibly be.
The star, which has been labeled EBLM J0555-57Ab, might not have a particularly interesting name, but it's an extremely important discovery all the same. For comparison, the star is just slightly larger than Saturn, and the gas giant Jupiter is even larger than it. In fact, the star is so small that it's thought that the researchers believe it is as small as stars can possibly be while still having the ability to facilitate hydrogen fusion. If the star were any smaller, the pressure at its core likely wouldn't be great enough to actually fuse hydrogen nuclei, making it a brown dwarf, which is often called a "failed star." But while the newly-discovered star is a lightweight, that's actually good news when it comes to the search for life. "The smallest stars provide optimal conditions for the discovery of Earth-like planets, and for the remote exploration of their atmospheres," Amaury Triaud of Cambridge's Institute of Astronomy said. "However, before we can study planets, we absolutely need to understand their star; this is fundamental." The TRAPPIST-1 system, which researchers recently revealed as being filled with seven potentially Earth-like planets, has a low-mass star at its center. That star, which is only about 30% larger than EBLM J0555-57Ab, is a prime example of why smaller stars are where we should be searching if we hope to find exoplanets that are potentially habitable. US attorney general failed to report Russia meetings on security form Posted: 13 Jul 2017 03:00 PM PDT The heavily redacted pages of the SF-86 security clearance form required for many senior government positions show Sessions answered "no" to the question of whether, over the past seven years, he had contact with any foreign government, its offices or officials inside or outside the United States. An ethics watchdog group close to Democrats, American Oversight, sued in April to get the document amid allegations that Sessions had unreported meetings with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during last year's election campaign. Posted: 13 Jul 2017 02:24 PM PDT The top Democrat in Congress has called upon the White House to revoke senior presidential adviser Jared Kushner's security clearance, in the wake of startling revelations about his contact with a Kremlin-connected lawyer. "The revelation that the Trump Campaign eagerly intended to possibly collude with Russia is deeply disturbing," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said on Twitter. Politicians in both parties have been increasingly suspicious of Mr Kushner in recent days, after it was revealed that he took part in a meeting with a Russian lawyer during the Trump campaign.
