Angela Merkel no longer considers America a friend, election material reveals Posted: 04 Jul 2017 02:00 PM PDT German leader Angela Merkel no longer considers the US a friend, according to her party's campaign material produced ahead of a September election. The German Chancellor has had an often tense relationship with President Donald Trump since he took office in January. Earlier this year, after Mr Trump said he would pull the US out of the Paris Accord and following the UK's vote to leave the EU, she said European countries could no longer rely on their traditional allies. Parsing hype from reality in North Korea's ICBM claim Posted: 04 Jul 2017 01:09 PM PDT SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — If North Korea's claim Tuesday of its first ICBM test-launch is true, it has barreled over a red line that the world has long called a tripwire for potential nuclear disaster. NASA concept video shows how we might save Earth from rogue asteroids Posted: 03 Jul 2017 05:23 PM PDT We've all seen those blockbuster movies in which scientists lay out complicated, risky plans to save Earth from an incoming asteroid. And those plans are almost always dependent on a bit of luck. But what would really happen in real life? NASA thinks it has an answer, and the space agency demonstrated that solution in a concept video (below) posted on Friday. SEE ALSO: This is how NASA spots potentially dangerous asteroids near Earth The video shows NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) vehicle deliberately crashing itself into one component of the binary asteroid system called Didymos. "DART would be NASA's first mission to demonstrate what's known as the kinetic impactor technique — striking the asteroid to shift its orbit — to defend against a potential future asteroid impact," Lindley Johnson, planetary defense officer at NASA, said in a statement in June. The plan is part of an international effort to develop a planetary defense program to address asteroids that might pose a danger to Earth. The kinetic impact test will be carried out years from now, beginning with the first part of the mission in 2020 with the launch of two spacecraft, and execution of the test occurring in 2022. In addition to NASA, partners in the plan include the European Space Agency (ESA), the Observatoire de la Côte d´Azur (OCA), and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL). It may be years before we find out if this is effective, but at least we're finally coming up with extinction-level event asteroid contingency plans that don't include migrating to Mars with Elon Musk. Damascus bomber kills 18 after car chase Posted: 03 Jul 2017 05:08 PM PDT A suicide car bomber pursued by security forces blew himself up in eastern Damascus on Sunday, with a monitor reporting 18 killed in the deadliest attack to hit the Syrian capital in months. Syrian state media and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said security forces intercepted three car bombers on their way into the city early in the morning. A third managed to reach the eastern Tahrir Square district, where the driver was surrounded but able to detonate a bomb. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

The iPhone 8 does not look good in white Posted: 03 Jul 2017 04:01 PM PDT The iPhone 8 will be the best iPhone version Apple launches this year, no matter what it's going to be called. Sporting a fresh new design and a slew of novel features, the iPhone 8 will be the major new iPhone innovation that some people have been waiting for. The iPhone 8 will be the first iPhone in years to sport several major design changes, including an all-screen front side that will have all sorts of effects on the overall design of the iPhone. A designer known for his concept creations based on rumors believed to be accurate released a series of iPhone 8 images that we've already covered. Just as his previous work, the concept images are gorgeous, and they do a fine job telling the iPhone 8 story, based on existing leaks and rumors. However, they also show us the ugliest iPhone 8 that Apple will release this year.
Martin Hajek took it upon himself to show us what a white iPhone 8 will look like, a color not seen in any leaks so far. But as soon as you see it, the iPhone 8's major "flaw" is immediately apparent. The white only makes it obvious: That top bezel is an unsightly contraption, a design compromise that we'll have to accept, just like we already do with the camera bump or antenna lines. But especially when painted white, that camera, speaker, and sensor island in the middle stands out even when you're not using the phone. There's no way to hide it. A black version of that half-bezel, on the other hand, will not be that apparent. The black bezel will almost merge with the dark glass — I'm not saying it won't be there, but it wouldn't stand out quite as badly. The question is, will Apple use white on front bezels this year? In previous years, Apple paired white bezels with certain colors, like gold, pink, and even red, using black for darker hues. Will Apple stick to this color pairing scheme for the iPhone 8? It's too soon to answer that question, as we have no idea what colors will be used for this year's flagship iPhone. But white, to me, looks like a bad choice for bezels this year.
