Arctic blast in U.S. brings early snow, freezing temperatures Posted: 18 Nov 2014 01:19 PM PST By Laila Kearney NEW YORK (Reuters) - Heavy snow and freezing temperatures blasted across the United States on Tuesday, with Northeast towns declaring emergencies and Southern states bracing for record cold. The Arctic chill that swept through the Rocky Mountains last week arrived in the Northeast and would push southward by evening, said National Weather Service meteorologist Patrick Burke. "Pretty much everybody, including the Southeast, will be entrenched in the cold," Burke said. In western New York, a storm brought as much as 4 feet (1. ... |

The flare-up came just hours after court bailiffs managed to clear part of a protest camp in the heart of the city that has been occupied by pro-democracy demonstrators for nearly two months, while leaving most of the main protest site intact. ... |

Stoltenberg said NATO saw movement of troops, equipment, tanks, artillery and also of advanced air defense systems in violation of a ceasefire agreement. Russia denies providing arms or troops to support a separatist pro-Russian rebellion in eastern Ukraine, which began after the removal of a Kremlin-oriented Ukrainian president by mass protests in February. ... |

U.S. Senate heads for vote on Keystone XL pipeline Posted: 17 Nov 2014 10:39 PM PST By Timothy Gardner and Richard Cowan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Backers of the Keystone XL oil pipeline hope a vote in the U.S. Senate late on Tuesday will send a bill to the desk of President Barack Obama. With the chamber apparently stuck at 59 votes in favor of Keystone XL, Senator Mary Landrieu worked hard on Monday to gather one last vote. Late in the day it seemed the Louisiana Democrat would come up just short, likely hurting her chances of winning a new six-year term in a December run-off election. ... |
