Californians support reducing sentences for nonviolent criminals Posted: 05 Nov 2014 11:53 AM PST (Reuters) - California voters passed a measure on Tuesday that will reduce the sentences of nonviolent offenders, potentially releasing 10,000 felons from state prisons. Proposition 47 won the support of 59 percent of voters, California Secretary of State records show. About 40,000 offenders could be annually affected by the new law, reported the state's Legislative Analyst's Office. State savings from the reduction in prisoner population would be used to support school truancy and dropout prevention, victim services, mental health and drug abuse treatment. ... |

The appointment of Tucker, who has worked as deputy commissioner of training since January, follows the unexpected resignation of Philip Banks, who stepped down as police chief days before he was due to be promoted to the deputy commissioner spot. Alaska backs measure to legalize recreational marijuana, opponents say Posted: 05 Nov 2014 04:30 AM PST JUNEAU (Reuters) - Alaska voters on Tuesday narrowly sanctioned the legal use of marijuana for recreational purposes, hours after Oregon approved a similar measure, opponents said. The ballot measure, which would set up a network of regulated pot shops similar to those already operating in Colorado and Washington state, passed by a 52-48 percent margin, according to anti-legalization group Smart Approaches to Marijuana.
