(Reuters) - A U.S. Army veteran who returned safely home to Los Angeles from Afghanistan several months ago was shot dead early Sunday after leaving a party hosted by his girlfriend, police said. Francisco Garcia, 21, was walking along a street with friends at about 2 a.m. when two vehicles pulled up, a man got of one vehicle, smashed a beer bottle on the ground and began screaming at Garcia, said Juan Santa, a detective for the Los Angeles Police Department. The man returned to one of the vehicles, got a handgun and fired at Garcia, Santa said. ...

Fire kills one, injures 11 at Chicago apartment complex

By Karen Brooks (Reuters) - One person died and 11 more were injured, including five children, in a Chicago apartment complex fire early Sunday, according to fire officials and local media. Authorities would not release details on the person who died, but local NBC television station WMAQ in Chicago reported that the victim was a 10-year-old boy. The victim was found dead on the fourth floor, while five children and six adults were hospitalized, Juan Hernandez, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman, told Reuters.
