University of Texas panel recommends allowing guns in classrooms Posted: 10 Dec 2015 09:34 AM PST A University of Texas advisory committee has reluctantly recommended allowing handguns in classrooms when a state law goes into effect next year, saying on Thursday it cannot bar the firearms under the state measure. On Aug. 1, 2016, a so-called state "campus carry" law goes into effect allowing people 21 and older with a concealed handgun license to carry handguns in classrooms and buildings throughout the University of Texas system, one of the nation's largest with an enrollment of more than 214,000 students. The 19-member committee, which examined how to implement the so-called campus carry, heard strong opposition from students, alumni and faculty about allowing guns in more places. |
FBI, security leaders to brief Congress on California killings Posted: 10 Dec 2015 09:02 AM PST The heads of the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security planned to brief members of both houses of the U.S. Congress on Thursday about the investigation of the Muslim couple who killed 14 people in California in what authorities say was an act of terror. The massacre by Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, the U.S.-born son of Pakistani immigrants, and Tashfeen Malik, 29, a Pakistani native he married in Saudi Arabia last year, has heightened security concerns in the United States and has become an issue in the U.S. presidential campaign. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is trying to determine the couple's motivation for opening fire with assault-style rifles at a holiday party for Farook's San Bernardino County co-workers on Dec. 2. |

In a special address to the City Council, the mayor said "I'm sorry" and promised "complete and total reform of the system." Emanuel's speech was met with applause from the City Council, but protesters said the city's actions do not go far enough. Hundreds of mostly young demonstrators filled downtown on Wednesday, temporarily shutting down some streets and chanting "no more killer cops" and "Rahm must go." "This system is designed for us to be dead or in jail and we're tired," said protester Jamal Wayne, 20. |
