The U.S. Muslim advocacy group Council on American-Islamic Relations said on Thursday its Capitol Hill office was evacuated by police after a foreign substance was received in the mail. The office received an envelope containing a note that read, "Die a painful death, Muslims," and a white powder, according to CAIR staff attorney Maha Sayed. About three employees came into contact with the powder and were quarantined in the building while police and firemen arrived on the scene to investigate, said Ibrahim Hooper, a CAIR spokesperson, adding that the rest of the office staff waited outside on the sidewalk.

On Aug. 1, 2016, a so-called state "campus carry" law goes into effect allowing people 21 and older with a concealed handgun license to carry handguns in classrooms and buildings throughout the University of Texas system, one of the nation's largest with an enrollment of more than 214,000 students. The 19-member committee, which examined how to implement the so-called campus carry, heard strong opposition from students, alumni and faculty about allowing guns in more places.

The massacre by Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, the U.S.-born son of Pakistani immigrants, and Tashfeen Malik, 29, a Pakistani native he married in Saudi Arabia last year, has heightened security concerns in the United States and has become an issue in the U.S. presidential campaign. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is trying to determine the couple's motivation for opening fire with assault-style rifles at a holiday party for Farook's San Bernardino County co-workers on Dec. 2.

Taylor's attorneys are seeking a sentence of 15 years to nearly 23 years.
