Ohio grand jury clears police in fatal shooting of 12 year-old Posted: 28 Dec 2015 11:36 AM PST A grand jury cleared two Cleveland police officers in the November 2014 fatal shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, a prosecutor said on Monday, adding that there was not enough evidence to charge them. The grand jury for weeks has been hearing testimony on the shooting of Rice, which took place within seconds after police arrived at a park next to a Cleveland recreation center in response to reports of a suspect with a gun. Rice died the next day. |
Chicago mayor under increasing pressure after latest shooting Posted: 28 Dec 2015 11:04 AM PST Pressure mounted on Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to resign on Monday after police shot and killed two black citizens over the weekend, putting further scrutiny on the nation's third-largest police force which is already under federal investigation over its use of deadly force. The release of a Chicago police video last month of the fatal shooting of a black teenager, which had been withheld for more than a year, led to the resignation of the city's police chief and the start of a U.S. Department of Justice probe into whether the city's police use lethal force too often, especially against minorities. High-profile killings of black men by police officers since mid-2014 have triggered waves of protest, including in Chicago, and fueled a civil rights movement under the name Black Lives Matter. |
Database of 191 million U.S. voters exposed on Internet: researcher Posted: 28 Dec 2015 10:01 AM PST An independent computer security researcher uncovered a database of information on 191 million voters that is exposed on the open Internet due to an incorrectly configured database, he said on Monday. The database includes names, addresses, birth dates, party affiliations, phone numbers and emails of voters in all 50 U.S. states and Washington, researcher Chris Vickery said in a phone interview. |
Hacking case against New York auxiliary officer dismissed Posted: 28 Dec 2015 08:57 AM PST By Nate Raymond NEW YORK (Reuters) - A federal judge has dismissed a charge against a New York City auxiliary police inspector who had been accused of hacking into law enforcement databases to defraud traffic accident victims. The one-count indictment against Yehuda Katz, who was first charged in March, was dismissed by U.S. District Judge Margo Brodie in Brooklyn on Wednesday at the request of federal prosecutors. In a letter on Monday, prosecutors said newly discovered evidence indicated Katz did not commit the crime. |
Strong thunderstorms threaten U.S. South, snow falls in Midwest Posted: 28 Dec 2015 07:01 AM PST The strongest storms will be in Alabama, Mississippi and the Florida panhandle, said AccuWeather senior meteorologist Michael Leseney. Tornado warnings were already in effect in Alabama, meaning a tornado had been sighted. To the north, the Chicago area was being hit by sleet, which was expected to turn to rain, while snow was falling in Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Michigan and parts of western Missouri, Leseney said. |

Christmastime storms, tornadoes kill at least 43 in U.S Posted: 27 Dec 2015 05:19 PM PST By Lisa Maria Garza DALLAS (Reuters) - Storms hit the U.S. South, Southwest and Midwest over the Christmas holiday weekend, unleashing floods and tornadoes that killed at least 43 people, flattened buildings and snarled transportation for millions during a busy travel time. The bad weather or threat of it prompted the governors of Missouri and New Mexico to declare a state of emergency for their states. In Missouri, emergency workers have evacuated residents from their homes and conducted dozens of water rescues, Governor Jay Nixon said on Sunday. |
