Cleveland activists oppose re-election of prosecutor in Tamir Rice shooting Posted: 30 Dec 2015 11:45 AM PST African-American leaders in Cleveland on Wednesday called for voters to reject the county prosecutor's bid for re-election next year after he recommended that police officers face no charges in the fatal shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice. Cuyahoga County Prosecuting Attorney Timothy McGinty on Monday said a grand jury followed his recommendation and cleared two officers in the November 2014 fatal shooting of Rice, who was brandishing a replica gun in a park. McGinty, a Democrat, said a series of errors that led to the shooting did not amount to criminal conduct by Officer Timothy Loehmann or his partner, Frank Garmback. |

Emanuel ended a vacation early this week to deal with fallout from the police shootings of a 55-year-old mother and a 19-year-old college student. Republicans come up short in search for diverse voters in 2016 election Posted: 30 Dec 2015 03:11 AM PST NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Ten months before the United States elects a new president, the Republican Party has yet to resolve a problem that its leaders said contributed to Mitt Romney's 2012 loss to Barack Obama: a lack of support among Hispanic and younger voters. The percentage of Republicans among those likely to vote in the Nov. 8, 2016, election lags Democrats by 9 percentage points, compared with a 6-point deficit in the year leading up to Obama's 2012 victory, according to an analysis of Reuters/Ipsos polling data from 2012 and 2015. In 2012, 93 percent of voters who identified as members of a particular party cast a ballot for that party's presidential candidate, a Reuters/Ipsos Election Day poll found. |

Chicago officer who shot black teen pleads not guilty to murder Posted: 29 Dec 2015 07:58 PM PST By Justin Madden and Renita D. Young CHICAGO (Reuters) - The Chicago police officer who shot a black teenager last year pleaded not guilty to murder on Tuesday, as Mayor Rahm Emanuel cut short a vacation to return to the city to deal with the fallout from two more fatal police shootings over the weekend. Meanwhile, protesters demonstrated outside the Cuyahoga County prosecutor's office in Cleveland, a day after a grand jury decided not to charge two white police officers in the 2014 shooting death of Tamir Rice, a black 12-year-old boy who was playing in a park with a toy gun that shoots plastic pellets. Tensions over race and policing in Chicago and Cleveland come amid intense scrutiny of police killings in the United States over the past 18 months, especially of black men. |

The NSA spied on Israeli prime minister during Iran talks, says WSJ Posted: 29 Dec 2015 04:18 PM PST In 2014, Washington was buzzing over a controversial new nuclear agreement between the US and Iran — but the negotiations may have kept America's spy agencies busy as well. A new report in The Wall Street Journal claims the negotiation process saw sustained efforts by the National Security Agency to monitor the communications of Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, particularly once he came to Washington to lobby Congress to oppose the deal. The Journal had previously reported on Israel's own efforts to spy on the closed door talks. |
