Protesters against police violence hit Chicago shopping district

Several hundred protesters against police killings of black men marched on Thursday along Chicago's Michigan Avenue, calling for Mayor Rahm Emanuel to step down and aiming to disrupt Christmas Eve shopping in a glittering, upscale commercial area. The march, which began at midday, was peaceful and police blocked traffic for the demonstration as protesters stopped and lay down in the street every block or so. Demonstrators chanted "Sixteen shots and a cover-up," protesting the year-long delay in bringing murder charges against police officer Jason Van Dyke, who shot and killed Laquan McDonald in October 2014 as the black teenager walked away from police, according to footage of the incident.

Alfred Gilman, 53, chairman of the pharmacology department at the University of Texas Southwestern, ..Dr. Alfred Gilman, a Nobel Laureate medical researcher known for groundbreaking work on cells and diseases, has died at the age of 74 after a long illness, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School said. Gilman and Martin Rodbell won the 1994 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of the G-protein, the mechanism that receives messages in a human cell and connects them to the correct destination. Gilman said at the time that his and Rodbell's work was closely linked to understanding and treating difficult diseases.

The stormy weather scrambled winter getaway plans in Florida even as dreams of a white Christmas melted in northeastern swaths of the country where unseasonably warm temperatures prevailed. A large tornado raked a 100-mile stretch of northern Mississippi in the late afternoon, demolishing or heavily damaging dozens of homes and other buildings in a six-county area before plowing into Tennessee, authorities said.

The auto safety agency also said it named a former U.S. Justice Department official to oversee the massive recalls of airbags and the Japanese parts firm's compliance with a settlement. NHTSA spokesman Gordon Trowbridge told reporters on a conference call that the death took place in July in a recalled used 2001 Honda Accord coupe near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

(Reuters) - Black Lives Matter held demonstrations in Minnesota and California on Wednesday to protest police killings of unarmed blacks, dubbing the day "Black Xmas" to show it could affect the economy on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. "Black communities across the United States are taking brave actions to impede the flow of goods and commerce with peaceful protests to call for an immediate overhaul of the justice system," Black Lives Matter said in a statement on Facebook. "Instead of buying gifts to fuel this system, Black Xmas is a day of action." The loosely organized movement grew out of protests over police killings of black men in Ferguson, Missouri, New York and other cities.
