China to build on disputed shoal in South China Sea

Posted: 17 Mar 2017 12:00 PM PDT

China to build on disputed shoal in South China SeaChina will begin preparatory work this year for an environmental monitoring station on Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, an official said, as two U.S. senators introduced a bill to impose sanctions on its activities in the disputed waterway. Last month, a Philippine minister said Chinese President Xi Jinping had promised his Philippine counterpart China would not build structures on the rocky outcrop both countries claim, but China called the comments "baffling and regrettable". China seized the shoal, which is northeast of the Spratly islands, in 2012 and denied access to Philippine fishermen.

Iraqi forces edge into Mosul's Old City, Nuri mosque in sight

Iraqi forces edge into Mosul's Old City, Nuri mosque in sightBy John Davison and Ahmed Rasheed MOSUL, Iraq/BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi forces battling Islamic State in Mosul edged into the Old City and around the al Nuri mosque on Friday trying to seal off a main road to prevent militants sending in suicide bombers to attack their positions. Troops are meeting fierce resistance as militants retreat into the Old City, where street fighting is expected in the narrow alleyways and around the mosque where Islamic State declared its caliphate nearly three years ago. A helicopter fired rockets into the area and heavy gunfire and mortar blasts echoed as troops made forays in districts near the Nuri mosque, where Islamic State's black jihadist flag hangs from its leaning minaret.

A crystal clear look at the Galaxy S8 in a crystal clear case

A crystal clear look at the Galaxy S8 in a crystal clear case

It's hard to imagine that Samsung has anything at all in store for us on March 29th that hasn't already been covered by all of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ leaks we've seen so far. A trickle of rumors and reports led up to BGR's exclusive unveiling of the Galaxy S8 during MWC 2017, and the floodgates opened after that. Now we know almost everything there is to know about the Galaxy S8 and S8+, and we've seen leaked images of the new flagship phones time and time again.

Of course, Android fans can't get enough of the Galaxy S8 duo no matter how many times they've seen these upcoming phones already. Samsung's new premium smartphones are undoubtedly two of the hottest new handsets of 2017, and they sport what may very well be the sleekest and most stunning smartphone design of all time. Now, a fresh leak gives us one of our clearest looks yet at Samsung's hot new Galaxy S8 design.

With all of the leaks and rumors having spilled just about all the beans there are to spill, some smartphone accessory makers have given up on waiting for Samsung to actually announce the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Instead, they're listing S8 accessories on their websites now, and some have even made accessories available for preorder.

Such is the case with a company called VRS Design, which has gone ahead and listed a number of its Galaxy S8 cases on its website. In doing so, the company has posted a number of images that show the unreleased Galaxy S8 in its cases. Again, we're not really seeing anything new here, but these crystal clear renders do give us a very good look at what to expect from Samsung's upcoming new flagship phones.

The clearest look at these S8 renders comes from the Galaxy S8 Crystal Clear Bumper page, since the clear case doesn't obscure any parts of the phone. Here are the images from the VRS Design site:

You can also see bits and pieces of the Galaxy S8 on VRS' Simpli Mod case page and its Damda Folder case page. Samsung will officially unveil the new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ during a press conference on March 29th, and the phones are expected to go on sale about a month later.

Welp, humanity had a good run: Humpback whales organize into mysterious 'super-groups'

Posted: 17 Mar 2017 10:14 AM PDT

Welp, humanity had a good run: Humpback whales organize into mysterious 'super-groups'Huge groups of humpback whales have been seen gathering in the Southern Hemisphere, and it's leaving scientists and people on the internet a little confused.  Usually, humpbacks are pretty solitary creatures, but a study published on March 1 in the journal PLOS One details multiple "super-groups" of whales gathering in 2011, 2014 and 2015.  SEE ALSO: Hundreds of whales mysteriously die — and scientists have a few theories as to why The groups range in size from 20 to 200 individuals, and, according to the study, the large gatherings appear to be associated with feeding behavior.  Of course, that didn't stop people on Twitter from wildly speculating about the whales' real motives. A running theme is that they have a plan — perhaps to take on the Trump administration or overthrow humanity.  I wanna go on the record as someone with tremendous respect for humpback whales. Samsung has done the impossible with the Galaxy S8

Posted: 17 Mar 2017 07:58 AM PDT

Samsung has done the impossible with the Galaxy S8

In the smartphone market, Samsung found success not by differentiating and carving its own path, but by taking a page out of Apple's playbook. Or should we say, 132 pages. Apple turned the cell phone industry on its head in 2007 when it released the original iPhone. There was certainly no better company to model its devices and strategy after, and Samsung's sales skyrocketed once it began retooling its devices to look and function more like Apple's smartphones and tablets.

Samsung still takes pages out of the Apple playbook from time to time — case in point — but it has truly elevated its game in recent years, with several recent generations of flagship phones that contend with the iPhone on every level. There is one are where Samsung flagships have never managed to compete with iPhones, but it looks like that will change with the upcoming new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

In just a week and a half, Samsung will unveil its next-generation flagship smartphones at a press conference in New York City. The wait has felt like an eternity considering how long Galaxy S8 details have been leaking. We know almost everything there is to know about the S8 and S8+, including exactly what they look like and when they'll be released. And now, we know how remarkably powerful these hot new handsets are going to be.

Each year when Samsung launches new Galaxy S phones, they're instantly become the most powerful widely available Android phones in the world. Note the inclusion of the word "Android," however. Samsung's phones are never the most powerful phones, period, because they simply can't measure up to iPhones in terms of power. Apple's in-house chips and its silky smooth iOS software reign supreme each and every year until the next new iPhones are released.

This year, however, it looks like things will be different.

Two separate Geekbench 4 benchmark test results for the unreleased Galaxy S8 smartphone appeared on the Primate Labs website on Thursday night. Long story short, they're very impressive. The S8 managed single-core scores of 1913 and 1978 in the two tests, and the multi-core scores came in at 6119 and 6375.

Both sets of test results come from the international version of the Galaxy S8, which is powered by Samsung's own Exynos 8895 processor, though earlier test results showed similar performance from the US version of the Galaxy S8+, which is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset.

In terms of single-core performance, the Galaxy S8 doesn't even come close to touching Apple's latest iPhones — the iPhone 7 Plus racks up a score of nearly 3500. But in multi-core Geekbench 4 tests, the S8 handily beats the latest iPhones, which always score under 5800.

This is a big victory for Samsung on paper, but it remains to be seen how it will translate as far as real-world performance. As we're sure you'll recall, earlier Samsung phones have come close to matching Apple's iPhones on paper, but iPhones absolutely obliterate Galaxy phones in performance tests that gauge real-world power and speed.

Google could have three Pixel handsets in store for late 2017

Posted: 17 Mar 2017 07:43 AM PDT

Google could have three Pixel handsets in store for late 2017Google could be working on three different versions of its next-generation Pixel smartphone, reports the Droid Life website, although there's no word yet on what to expect from the spec sheets. The upcoming Pixel line will apparently still include 5" and 5.5" models (codenamed "Walleye" and "Muskie"), but these could now be joined by a larger and even more ambitious version, codenamed "Taimen." This makes an interesting parallel with rumors surrounding the next-generation iPhone, which point to two "classic" 4.7" and 5.5" versions plus a more show-stopping 5.8" model with a slightly curved OLED screen. Expected at the end of 2017, Google's new Pixels are likely to be dust- and water-resistant.

UK says U.S. claims about spying will not be repeatedBy Elizabeth Piper and Michael Holden LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Theresa May has received assurances from the White House it would not repeat allegations that Britain's GCHQ spy agency had helped former U.S. President Barack Obama eavesdrop on Donald Trump, her spokesman said on Friday. After-school programs are "supposed to help kids who don't get fed at home, get fed so they do better in school," Mick Mulvaney, director of the federal Office of Management and Budget, told a White House press briefing. Trump's 2018 budget outline would cut the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program, which funds academic enrichment programming before and after school as well as in the summers.

Israeli warplanes hit targets in Syria as tensions flareIsraeli warplanes struck several targets in Syria early Friday, prompting retaliatory missiles launches, in the most serious incident between the two countries since the Syrian civil war began six years ago.
