Small town mayor offers different window on Texas transgender debate Posted: 08 Mar 2017 01:57 PM PST Small town mayor Jess Herbst wasn't sure whether to expect pitchforks and torches when the next council meeting rolled around. The packed meeting – 15 to 20 people – was the first since news of her transition from Jeff to Jess Herbst, pitching a reluctant New Hope, Texas, front and center in the zeitgeist surrounding the transgender rights movement. A little over a month ago, Ms. Herbst shocked the town of about 700 when she revealed in a note to the town that she was transitioning from male to female. Eco-warriors win first S. Africa climate change case Posted: 08 Mar 2017 12:50 PM PST South African environmental activists declared a major victory Wednesday after winning the country's first climate change case and forcing the government to reassess the impact of a coal power plant. The group, Earthlife Africa, successfully challenged a government decision to confirm construction of a proposed coal-fired power station, arguing that the proper climate change impact assessment had not been carried out. Environment minister Edna Molewa accepted that the impact of the proposed Thabametsi power plant had not been "comprehensively assessed or considered" -- but granted environmental approval anyway, according to the ruling seen by AFP. 'A Day Without a Woman' protests across the U.S. Posted: 08 Mar 2017 12:11 PM PST American women stayed home from work, zipped up their wallets, wore red and joined rallies across the country to demonstrate their economic clout Wednesday as part of International Women's Day events around the globe. The Day Without a Woman protest in the U.S. was put together by organizers of the vast women's marches that were held coast-to-coast the day after President Donald Trump's inauguration. School districts including those in Prince George's County, Maryland; Alexandria, Virginia; and Chapel Hill, North Carolina, canceled classes because so many teachers and other employees were expected to be out. In Providence, Rhode Island, the municipal court closed for lack of staff members. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Here's the terrible reason even married people are having less sex Posted: 08 Mar 2017 11:32 AM PST You might think the current flood of dating apps would mean people are having more sex than ever, but in fact for many, the exact opposite seems to be true. Gasp! A new study published by the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior and reported by the Washington Post found that people are having less sex overall than they were in the 1990s. The study, which used data from the giant General Social Survey, found that on the whole American adults in the early 2010s had sex nine fewer times per year than they did in the 1990s. When you spread that over 12 months, that's not exactly a heinous dry spell, thank goodness. Still, more sex is usually better than less. The decrease was seen across gender, race, region, education, and employment status. One reason for the drop? There are now more people without partners, who typically tend to have half the sex that those with partners do. But even married people (and those living with partners) aren't doing it as much. SEE ALSO: When it comes to sex, older people are just like the rest of us: Horny as hell There used to be what was called the "marriage advantage," meaning that those who were partnered up had more sex because they had a ready and willing partner at hand. But that has sadly disappeared. In 1990, married people had sex around 73 times per year, according to reports. By 2014, that was down to 55. Comparatively, that number for unpartnered people stayed level—about 59 times per year. Even with Match and OKCupid and Tinder, singles aren't really hooking up more than when you had to meet people the old-fashioned way. So why are the married among us failing to get busy with each other? The study suggests it may be because they're too busy doing other things, like sending work emails or playing games on their phone. After all, how many nights have you sat in bed combing through your feeds, oblivious to the person next to you? SEE ALSO: The best dating apps to get you laid We're also less happy overall, are more depressed, and are taking more antidepressants as a result. All of these things aren't exactly known for putting people in the mood. We do know, based on the data, that the decline isn't due to people working longer hours or consuming more porn. Of course, just because this is happening on average doesn't mean it has to happen to you. You can put the phone down and look at your partner again. And if you're single, you can pick up the phone and try to find a match who makes you want to do more than just look at your phone. Posted: 08 Mar 2017 11:17 AM PST KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — One day after a stunning breakdown in diplomatic ties, Malaysia said Wednesday that it wants to negotiate with Pyongyang despite an increasingly bitter dispute over the investigation into the killing of Kim Jong Nam, the long-exiled half brother of North Korea's ruler. Malaysia has said two female attackers wielding VX nerve agent killed Kim on Feb. 13 at a crowded airport in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia's investigation has infuriated North Korea, which has dismissed the inquiry as politically motivated. The dispute took a surprising turn on Tuesday, when North Korea announced that it was blocking all Malaysians from leaving the country until the dispute is resolved. Bombshell report says iPhone 8 will be called ‘iPhone Edition’ and might already be delayed Posted: 08 Mar 2017 10:13 AM PST According to a new report from Macotakara, Apple's flagship 2017 iPhone -- a device that has been prematurely dubbed the iPhone 8 -- will actually be called the iPhone Edition. While nothing is ever certain until Tim Cook and co. actually walk out on stage, the iPhone Edition nomenclature actually makes a lot more sense than the iPhone 8 name ever did.
First off, releasing a device called the iPhone 8 alongside two iPhone 7s models would immediately make Apple's non-OLED smartphones seem outdated at launch. Second, the "Edition" naming scheme -- thanks to the Apple Watch -- is already familiar and fits nicely as a descriptor for Apple's premium devices. Naming conventions aside, Macotakara relays that the iPhone Edition may ship much later than the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus. Disappointing news to say the least, the report claims that Apple simply needs more time to test the device before it's ready for primetime. Specifically, Apple is said to have a few iPhone Edition prototypes in the EVT (Engineering Validation Test) phase but that no single prototype has reached the DVT (Design Validation Test) phase yet. As a quick primer, DVT is one step above EVT and comes into play when Apple finally nails down the exact design and feature-set it wants to ultimately ship to consumers. As for the reasons behind the delay, Apple is reportedly still exploring what types of materials it wants to use, the exact display technology it wants to incorporate and whether it wants to do away with the home button or not. As a quick aside, the report claims that Apple is considering using white ceramic as a potential material for the iPhone Edition. According to the report, the only iPhone Edition features Apple has firmly signed off on include the display size, wireless charging functionality and a dual camera setup. The report also notes that Apple has no plans to abandon the Lightning connector for a USB-C solution, thus dousing an intriguing rumor which emerged last week. Now as for when Apple's somewhat mythical iPhone Edition might hit store shelves, well, that's still anybody's guess. Shedding a little bit of light on the matter, Digitimes last week claimed that Apple isn't planning to begin mass producing its edgeless iPhone until September on account of a new fingerprint sensor solution it's planning to implement. If this is indeed the case, the iPhone Edition may not arrive in stores until November. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Najib softens line in bid to get Malaysians out of North Korea Posted: 08 Mar 2017 09:02 AM PST By Rozanna Latiff and Liz Lee KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak struck a softer tone with North Korea on Wednesday, a day after accusing it of assassinating the estranged half-brother of Kim Jong Un and treating Malaysians as "hostages." Malaysian police have identified eight North Koreans wanted for questioning in connection with the killing of Kim Jong Nam at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Feb. 13, three of them hiding in the North Korean embassy. In a bid to "ensure the safety" of its diplomats and citizens in Malaysia, North Korea retaliated on Tuesday by banning Malaysians from leaving the country until the case was "properly solved." Najib denounced that move as an "abhorrent act" and ordered a reciprocal ban. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Women in U.S. plan to stay off the job, rally in anti-Trump protests Posted: 08 Mar 2017 08:43 AM PST Women in the United States plan to use International Women's Day on Wednesday to stay off the job and stage demonstrations across the country in an effort to seize on the momentum built from the massive marches held a day after President Donald Trump's inauguration. On "A Day Without a Woman," those who are able to do so will stay away from work or school, much as immigrants did on Feb. 16 to protest Trump's immigration policies. How to tell if the CIA hacked your smart TV Posted: 08 Mar 2017 07:38 AM PST Earlier today, Wikileaks dropped a massive collection of CIA documents related to the group's espionage efforts and the tools at its disposal. iOS and Android devices were high on the list of hackables, but also included was smart TVs — more specifically, Samsung smart TVs — which can be hacked to record conversations even when they appear to be powered down. The CIA calls the hack "Weeping Angel" in its internal documentation, and while you're (probably) not the target of a CIA investigation yourself, here's how to tell if your TV would be vulnerable to such an attack, and even see if it's already been breached.
The hack applies to a very specific group of Samsung TVs that were manufactured between 2012 and 2013, and of those televisions, only those still running now antiquated firmware versions 1111, 1112, and 1116 are actually vulnerable to being exploited. The specific models of television from that timeframe include the UNF7500 series, UNF7000 series, UNF8000 series, UNF8500 series, as well as the UNES8000F, E8000GF, and UNES7550F. If you have one of those models and haven't updated your firmware in a very, very long time, you can do so via your home internet connection or via USB. Type your model number into Samsung's support site if you're in need of specific step-by-step directions catered to your specific TV. As for determining if your device has been hacked — and seriously, the chances that you're somehow on the CIA's list of people to hack is incredibly low — the agency provided some details on that in the leaked documents, too. The Weeping Angel hack puts the smart TV into a "fake off" state, where the LEDs on the front of the set are dimmed just like when it's really off, but the blue LED indicator on the rear of the display remains on. If you shut your TV off and the blue light on the back stays lit, it's probably time to stop hanging out with whoever it is you've been hanging out with.
