U.S.-led coalition helps train Raqqa police: Syrian Kurdish officials Posted: 25 Mar 2017 01:15 PM PDT By Tom Perry and Ellen Francis BEIRUT (Reuters) - The U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State is helping to train a police force for the Syrian city of Raqqa in anticipation of its capture from the militants, two Kurdish officials said on Friday. It would consist mainly of Arabs, in line with Raqqa's demography, but also include Kurds and other ethnic groups. The extent of Kurdish influence in the future running of the city is sensitive both for residents and for NATO member Turkey, which has fought its own Kurdish insurgency for three decades and fears growing Kurdish ascendancy just over the border in northern Syria. Illinois governor vetoes Chicago pension fix, angers city's mayor Posted: 25 Mar 2017 04:36 AM PDT By Dave McKinney CHICAGO (Reuters) - Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner on Friday vetoed a legislative fix favored by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel for two of the city's struggling pension funds and castigated it as a "kick-the-can approach." The financial footing and credit ratings for the nation's third-largest city have slipped precipitously as its unfunded pension liabilities grew to $33.8 billion for Chicago's four retirement systems in the most recent accounting.
