Clashes in Syria capital after surprise rebel assault Posted: 19 Mar 2017 01:28 PM PDT Heavy clashes rocked eastern districts of the Syrian capital on Sunday as rebels and jihadists tried to fight their way into the city centre in a surprise assault on government forces. The attack comes just days before a fresh round of UN-brokered peace talks in Geneva aiming at ending Syria's six-year war. Rebels and government forces agreed to a nationwide cessation of hostilities in December, but fighting has continued across much of the country, including in the capital. Italy arrests Ghanaian for trafficking, torturing migrants Posted: 19 Mar 2017 01:14 PM PDT By Gavin Jones ROME (Reuters) - Italian police said on Saturday they had arrested a Ghanaian man for alleged murder, rape, kidnapping and people-smuggling after migrants he is accused of mistreating attacked him at a reception center on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa. According to the arrest warrant, the African migrants turned on 20-year-old Sam Eric Ackom, known to his assailants as Fanti, when they recognized him as one of a gang that had kidnapped and tortured them in Libya during their voyage to Italy. The warrant, issued by police in the Sicilian city of Agrigento and seen by Reuters, illustrates the plight of thousands of migrants fleeing war and poverty who increasingly fall victim to criminal gangs operating in lawless Libya. Pulitzer-winning New York columnist Jimmy Breslin dies at 88 Posted: 19 Mar 2017 12:24 PM PDT Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper columnist Jimmy Breslin, a self-described "street reporter" who chronicled New York City life for decades and won acclaim for his coverage of the "Son of Sam" serial killings, died on Sunday morning at age 88. Breslin died at his home on Manhattan's West Side, said Michael Daly, a friend and a columnist at the New York Daily News, one of several newspapers where Breslin worked in his decades-long career. Breslin was believed to be 86 at the time of his death, but the columnist's family and doctor checked his birth certificate after his death and it showed him to be 88, the Daily News reported. Tennessee police hunt former teacher accused of kidnapping student Posted: 19 Mar 2017 07:09 AM PDT Tad Cummins, 50, who is believed to be armed with two hand guns, was placed on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's top 10 "most wanted" list on Friday on charges of aggravate kidnapping and having sexual contact with a minor. Cummings, who is married, was fired from his Maurey County high school teaching job on Tuesday after being accused of having an inappropriate relationship with student Beth Thomas, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a statement. Thomas was last seen on Monday just before 8 a.m. CT when a friend dropped her off at a Shoney's family-style restaurant parking lot in Columbia, Tennessee, a city about 45 miles south of Nashville.
