Missouri prosecutor releases more evidence from Ferguson shooting Posted: 13 Dec 2014 10:46 AM PST (Reuters) - A Missouri prosecutor on Saturday made public two dozen documents related to the investigation into the shooting of Michael Brown, a black teenager killed by a white police officer, saying his office had inadvertently held them back. St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCullough released 23 documents, including a transcript of an interview authorities had with Dorian Johnson, who was with Brown in August when the unarmed 18-year-old was shot and killed by Darren Wilson, in Ferguson. The incident set off days of sometimes violent protests in the St. Louis suburb. A grand jury on Nov. ... |
NYC police union launches campaign to keep mayor away from funerals Posted: 13 Dec 2014 09:23 AM PST By Frank McGurty NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York's police union is showing its displeasure with Mayor Bill de Blasio and the head of the city council by starting a campaign to keep the two politicians away from funerals of fallen officers. The campaign follows harsh criticism of de Blasio by Patrick Lynch, the head of the union, who said the mayor had failed to support the police after a grand jury decided against indicting a white officer in the chokehold death of Eric Garner. Since the grand jury decision on Dec. ... |

Ho, ho, holdup! Bank robbers get busy during holidays Posted: 13 Dec 2014 04:19 AM PST By Ian Simpson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - End-of-year holidays mean a lot of things - Santa, carols, parties, cards and gifts. They also mean more bank robberies. The number of holdups at U.S. banks tends to rise in December as crooks, some of them spurred by holiday consumerism, turn to robbery in the weeks leading up to Christmas, according to the FBI and security experts. The trend is so pronounced that the FBI's regional office in Washington, D.C., told banks last month to be on their guard. It also warned would-be robbers that police were focused on thwarting bank stickups. ... |

8 dead, 100 missing in Indonesian landslide: official Posted: 12 Dec 2014 10:21 PM PST A landslide triggered by torrential downpours has killed at least 12 people and left nearly 100 others missing on Indonesia's main island of Java, an official said Saturday. Hundreds of rescuers were digging through mud and rubble after the landslide buried scores of houses in Jemblung village in central Java late Friday, the national disaster agency said. Disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said it was unclear whether those missing were buried under the landslide or had taken refuge. Landslides triggered by heavy rains and floods are common in tropical Indonesia during the rainy season. |
After racial tumult, NBA opens floor to social activism Posted: 12 Dec 2014 09:33 PM PST By Eric Kelsey LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - When a wave of the NBA's biggest stars donned "I can't breathe" shirts - the rallying cry of demonstrators against U.S. policing tactics in black communities - it highlighted the power and influence wielded by today's professional basketball stars. The pre-game actions this week of LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Derrick Rose, observers say, spring from their outsized celebrity, enormous wealth and shared sense of social activism. Behind the scenes stands a new commissioner who has let players mix sports and social issues so far without consequence. ... |
