Census puts U.S. population at 320.09 mln, up 0.7 percent from year-ago Posted: 29 Dec 2014 08:44 AM PST WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. population is seen at 320.09 million people as of Jan. 1, up 0.73 percent from a year earlier, the Census Bureau said on Monday. The Census Bureau said in a statement that the figure represents an increase of about 11.35 million people, or 3.67 percent, since the last population count on April 1, 2010. "In January 2015, the U.S. is expected to experience a birth every eight seconds and one death every 12 seconds. Meanwhile, net international migration is expected to add one person to the U.S. population every 33 seconds," the Census Bureau said. ... |
Texas police investigate deaths of four people in Fort Worth area home Posted: 29 Dec 2014 07:35 AM PST AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Police in Texas responding to a possible suicide at a home in suburban Fort Worth found the bodies of a man, two women and a girl inside the residence, officials said on Monday. A 9-year-old boy found alive in the home has been placed in protective custody and is being interviewed about the incident that took place on Sunday, police said. The boy called a relative, saying there was a man inside who was trying to kill himself. That relative then called police who went to the house in Crowley, south of Fort Worth. ... |

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Roche's LightMix Ebola Zaire rRT-PCR Test for use on patients with signs and symptoms of Ebola Zaire virus infection, the Swiss drugmaker said in a statement. Italy's Renzi says four more dead recovered from ferry Posted: 29 Dec 2014 04:08 AM PST ROME (Reuters) - Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said on Monday that four more bodies had been recovered from the car ferry that caught fire off the coast of Greece, bringing the death toll to five. Renzi said during an end-year press conference that about 60 passengers remained on board more than 24 hours after the fire started and they would be brought to safety within "a few hours". Italy says 265 rescued from ferry, more than 200 still stranded Posted: 28 Dec 2014 10:46 PM PST ROME (Reuters) - Rescue teams working through the night have pulled 265 people off a stricken car ferry which caught fire off the coast of Greece but more than 200 are stranded on board, the Italian navy said on Monday. Helicopter crews have been slowly airlifting passengers from the upper deck of the Norman Atlantic, which caught fire in the early hours of Sunday and began drifting in rough seas between Greece and Italy. A medical team and a flight operator are on the vessel to assist the 213 passengers and crew who remain aboard as the rescue continues, the navy said. ... |
