(Reuters) - At least 15 people were killed and another 20 wounded at a shooting on Thursday at a community college in Roseburg, Oregon, media reported. A Douglas County commissioner told CNN that the shooter had been taken into custody. A spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff's department confirmed to Reuters that there was a shooting at the Umpqua Community College campus in Roseburg.

Accused Arizona highway shooter pleads not guilty

A man charged with carrying out several recent shootings along a major highway in Arizona pleaded not guilty on Thursday to 15 felonies including drive-by shooting and aggravated assault, a court spokesman said. Leslie Merritt Jr, 21, entered the plea before a commissioner in Maricopa County Superior Court in the first four of more than 10 possible shootings that began in late August along a stretch of Interstate 10 that runs through the Phoenix area. Merritt was arrested without incident on Sept. 18 while entering a Walmart store after police said they were able to forensically link four of the shootings to his handgun, which was found later by investigators at a local pawn store.

The storm is expected to strengthen into a Category 4 storm with winds reaching 140 mph Friday as it turns north toward the U.S. East Coast. Joaquin is expected to weaken over the next few days before making landfall possibly as a tropical storm with maximum winds of 70 mph on Tuesday, according to the latest NHC forecast.


Texas man faces life term for 47-year-old Pennsylvania murder

A Texas man faces a life term at his sentencing in Pennsylvania on Thursday for the 1968 murder of a Bethlehem Steel Corp worker in what prosecutors say is one of the nation's oldest cold cases to result in conviction. Richard Keiper, 69, of Boyd, Texas, will be sentenced in Monroe County Court of Common Pleas in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Authorities say Keiper never denied shooting Alfred Barnes, 40, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, an assistant to a vice president of Bethlehem Steel, on Oct., 18, 1968 and was an early suspect in the case.
