Congress close to extension on train safety deadline: aides Posted: 16 Oct 2015 01:21 PM PDT By David Morgan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House and Senate are "very close" to reaching bipartisan agreement to extend the Dec. 31 federal deadline for passenger and freight railroads to implement new safety technology for avoiding major accidents, an aide said on Friday. A Senate aide also acknowledged that bipartisan discussions were making progress. Most U.S. railroads are expected to miss the Dec. 31 deadline for adopting the technology, which Congress imposed in 2008, and have threatened to suspend freight and passenger service on major lines after Jan. 1, 2016, if lawmakers fail to grant an extension. |
Democrat raps Benghazi panel on Clinton aide questioning Posted: 16 Oct 2015 11:08 AM PDT By Susan Cornwell WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Turmoil swirled again on Friday around the Republican-controlled Benghazi committee in the U.S. House of Representatives as it began questioning a senior aide to Hillary Clinton. Huma Abedin, a close confidante for years of the Democratic presidential campaign front-runner, in the morning entered a closed-door interview of undetermined duration with the panel. After she went in, Democratic Representative and panel member Elijah Cummings came out and said summoning Abedin raised the question of whether the panel is "a taxpayer funded effort to derail the (presidential) candidacy of Hillary Clinton." He said Abedin, who is the vice-chairwoman of Clinton's campaign, had no responsibilities related to the tragedy the committee was set up to investigate. |

New York's jails still plagued by violence, city official says Posted: 16 Oct 2015 09:30 AM PDT The number of assaults by inmates on guards in the city's jails rose 46 percent and use-of-force incidents by uniformed personnel increased 27 percent in fiscal year 2015, which ended June 30, compared to the prior year, the report released on Friday by city Comptroller Scott Stringer showed. Mayor Bill de Blasio's administration has made reforming the city's jails a priority in response to widespread allegations of violence at Rikers Island, one of the country's biggest jail complexes, which houses the vast majority of the city's inmates. "This is the second year in a row that we have seen an escalation of disturbing trends," Stringer said in a statement. |
Central Texas wildfire forces evacuation of more than 400 homes Posted: 16 Oct 2015 08:07 AM PDT AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Residents have been forced to evacuate more than 400 homes due to a wildfire in central Texas that has destroyed more than 30 structures and prompted Governor Greg Abbott to declare a state of disaster, officials said on Friday. With a large air tanker designed to fight wildfires and more resources on their way to Bastrop County, east of Austin, authorities said they hoped to bring under control the so-called Hidden Pines fire that has burned 4,383 acres and is only 25 percent contained. ... |

Palestinians torch Jewish shrine amid 'revolution' calls Posted: 16 Oct 2015 02:30 AM PDT Palestinians torched a site revered by Jews in the West Bank overnight, Israeli and Palestinian sources said Friday, amid calls for fresh protests after more than two weeks of deadly unrest. Video showed what looked like an extensive blaze at the site in the northern city of Nablus known as Joseph's Tomb, and the Israeli army called the attack "a despicable act" of desecration. Palestinians have called for a "Friday of revolution" against Israel and Jerusalem police barred men under 40 years of age from attending the main weekly prayers at the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque, seeking to keep young protesters away. |
Hillary Clinton drops hint about possible VP pick Posted: 15 Oct 2015 11:29 PM PDT During a Q&A in San Antonio, Texas, with the president of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Javier Palomarez, Clinton was asked her thoughts on the young, Hispanic U.S. Housing and Urban Development secretary as her possible running mate. Both he and his twin brother are just among the best young leaders in America, regardless of category or the fact that they come from San Antonio," Clinton said, referring to Castro, 41, and his brother, Rep. Joaquín Castro. Clinton and Julian Castro, 41, are hosting a "Latinos for Hillary" rally together in San Antonio later today. |
Ex-House Speaker Hastert to plead guilty in hush-money case Posted: 15 Oct 2015 10:24 PM PDT By Mary Wisniewski CHICAGO (Reuters) - Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert is expected to plead guilty in a hush-money case stemming from allegations of sexual misconduct in a deal with prosecutors that could still force him to serve time in prison. The tentative plea agreement, disclosed during a brief hearing in federal court in Chicago on Thursday, would mark a dramatic downfall for someone who once ranked among the most powerful men in the country. Hastert, 73, was charged in May with trying to hide large cash transactions as part of a payoff scheme and lying about it to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. |

U.S. budget deficit falls to 8-year low in 2015 Posted: 15 Oct 2015 03:31 PM PDT The US government's budget deficit fell to an eight-year low in fiscal 2015, dropping to $439 billion, the Treasury Department announced Thursday. The cut in the finance gap -- which was $1.4 trillion in 2009 -- brought the deficit down to 2.5 percent of gross domestic product, the lowest level since 2007. The achievement marked a long effort by the administration of President Barack Obama to pare back the budget shortfall after it soared when the economy plunged into crisis in 2008. |
Why U.S. troops are staying longer in Afghanistan Posted: 15 Oct 2015 03:14 PM PDT The announcement that thousands of U.S. troops will remain in Afghanistan longer than planned marks a major reversal of President Obama's goal to end both this war, as well as the war in Iraq, during his time in office. The president formally announced the policy change at the White House this morning alongside Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford. The decision comes as the situation in Afghanistan continues to deteriorate, highlighted by the Taliban's takeover of the city of Kunduz last month. |
