Gun control will reduce police officer deaths: Obama Posted: 27 Oct 2015 11:20 AM PDT President Barack Obama will tell police chiefs on Tuesday that stricter gun control would reduce the number of police officers shot down on U.S. streets, in his latest call for reform of laws that govern the use of firearms in America. Obama is scheduled to speak at a major conference of police chiefs during a turbulent time for the law enforcement community, with a new U.S. Justice Department report expected to be issued at the gathering on ambush attacks on police. |

White House, Congress reach tentative U.S. budget deal Posted: 27 Oct 2015 06:06 AM PDT By Roberta Rampton and Richard Cowan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House and congressional leaders reached a two-year budget deal overnight that would lift mandatory sequestration cuts on both defense and domestic spending and raise the federal debt ceiling, averting a fiscal standoff as the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives prepares for new leadership. A White House official said on Tuesday the compromise deal would protect Social Security and Medicare beneficiaries from cuts and urged members of Congress from both parties to pass it. House Speaker John Boehner and other congressional leaders raced to finalize the deal, which included extending the debt ceiling until March 2017, on Monday night, before he transfers power to his expected successor, Paul Ryan. |
Tiny New Hampshire communities guard midnight voting tradition Posted: 27 Oct 2015 05:34 AM PDT HART'S LOCATION, N.H. (Reuters) - At midnight on a yet-to-be chosen Tuesday early next year, the roughly 40 residents of New Hampshire's smallest town will pack into a small log building off the main road to cast some of the first votes in the race for the White House. Hart's Location is one of three tiny communities nestled in the White Mountains where people cast the first votes in the first U.S. presidential nominating primary every four years. Midnight voting is one of the quirkier traditions of New Hampshire's 100-year-old primary, and not a terribly accurate gauge of which candidates will win their parties' nominations. |
U.S. police chiefs call for background checks for all gun purchases Posted: 27 Oct 2015 02:51 AM PDT Police chiefs from across the United States called on Monday for universal background checks for firearms purchases, saying opinion polls consistently show that most Americans support such restrictions. The proliferation of firearms is one of the factors behind a rise in homicide rates in many U.S. cities this year, according to senior law enforcement officials at the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Chicago. Acknowledging the power of the gun lobby and the reluctance of Congress to enact stricter gun laws, the police chiefs told a news conference they were not anti-gun but wanted to keep weapons out of the hands of people with criminal backgrounds. |

Convicted Russian arms dealer Bout loses bid for new U.S. trial Posted: 26 Oct 2015 03:58 PM PDT A Manhattan federal judge said convicted Russian arms trafficker Viktor Bout, who is serving a 25-year prison sentence, does not deserve a new trial on the basis of newly discovered evidence. U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin on Monday said Bout, 48, did not meet the high legal standard of showing that his November 2011 jury conviction should be thrown out. Jurors convicted Bout of conspiring to kill U.S. soldiers through his agreement to sell arms to informants posing as members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, which the U.S. government had deemed a foreign terrorist organization, and conspiring to acquire and export anti-aircraft missiles. |
