Stanford, 65, was convicted in March 2012 over what prosecutors called a scam centered on his sale of fraudulent high-yielding certificates of deposit through his Antigua-based Stanford International Bank.

The accounts cited calls from a person inside Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, and another who hid in an office in the church, which is the oldest African-American congregation in the southern United States. "People shot down ... Shot pastor ... Man is still here ... Lower level ...," an entry in the police communications log said.


Dynamic Airways jet catches fire at Florida airport, passengers evacuated

Passengers were forced to evacuate a Dynamic International Airways' Boeing 767 headed for Venezuela on Thursday after the plane's engine caught fire on the airport runway in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, officials said. There were "several injuries" after the engine caught fire, Broward County Sheriff's Office said in a Twitter post. Passengers were evacuated via slides onto the runway at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport about 12:45 p.m, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

Florida plans to execute on Thursday a man who was convicted of fatally stabbing his young daughter, his ex-wife and two of her relatives in a jealous rampage 30 years ago. Jerry Correll, 59, is scheduled to die by injection at 6 p.m. in the execution chamber at Florida State Prison. Correll's execution was originally set for February but was delayed as the U.S. Supreme Court weighed a challenge to the drug midazolam, a sedative used during the state's lethal injection protocol.

The U.S. military scrambled two armed F-16 fighter jets to keep watch as the massive blimp traveled into civilian airspace after coming untethered from its base at Aberdeen Proving Ground, a U.S. Army facility 40 miles (65 km) northeast of Baltimore. Pentagon officials said they were unsure why the 242-foot-long blimp broke free at 12:20 p.m. Military officials wrestled for hours over the best way to bring it down safely, but eventually it deflated on its own.

Three people were wounded by gunfire on Wednesday evening inside the Washington Square Mall on the east side of Indianapolis, an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police spokesman said. The three victims managed to run through a Target Store connected to the mall after the shooting and they were taken to nearby hospitals, Indianapolis Police Sergeant Kendale Adams said. Indianapolis police responded to the mall at about 6:30 p.m. on reports of multiple people shot, the Indianapolis Star newspaper reported.
