House GOP, eager to mend wounds, ready to make Ryan speaker Posted: 29 Oct 2015 01:16 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — Outgoing Speaker John Boehner bade farewell to his colleagues Thursday as the House commenced the political pageantry of electing Paul Ryan to replace him, with Republicans hoping the young but seasoned lawmaker can mend the splintered party's self-inflicted wounds and craft a conservative message to woo voters in next year's elections. |
Allen Stanford loses appeal of Ponzi scheme conviction Posted: 29 Oct 2015 12:44 PM PDT The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans turned aside several arguments raised by Stanford, including that the trial court showed favoritism to prosecutors and that the sentence was too long. Stanford, 65, was convicted in March 2012 over what prosecutors called a scam centered on his sale of fraudulent high-yielding certificates of deposit through his Antigua-based Stanford International Bank. |
South Carolina church massacre detailed in newly released documents Posted: 29 Oct 2015 11:38 AM PDT Police logs released on Thursday revealed a chilling account of the June 17 massacre at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, that killed nine people. The accounts cited calls from a person inside Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, and another who hid in an office in the church, which is the oldest African-American congregation in the southern United States. "People shot down ... Shot pastor ... Man is still here ... Lower level ...," an entry in the police communications log said. |

Posted: 29 Oct 2015 10:35 AM PDT China announced the end of its hugely controversial one-child policy on Thursday, after decades of strict, sometimes brutal enforcement left it with an ageing population and shrinking workforce that has heightened the challenges of slowing economic growth. All couples will be allowed two children, the official Xinhua news agency reported, citing a communique issued by the ruling Communist Party following a four-day meeting in Beijing. The historic change was "intended to balance population development and address the challenge of an ageing population", Xinhua said. |

U.S. won't halt NSA phone spying program ahead of ban Posted: 29 Oct 2015 07:35 AM PDT A U.S. appeals court on Thursday refused to immediately halt the federal government's collection of phone records belonging to millions of Americans during a "transition" period to a new scheme that bans the controversial surveillance. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York, which in May found the National Security Agency's sweeping program illegal, said it would not disturb Congress' decision to provide a 180-day transition period to allow an orderly end to the program. |
Florida to execute man convicted in quadruple murder Posted: 29 Oct 2015 04:18 AM PDT Florida plans to execute on Thursday a man who was convicted of fatally stabbing his young daughter, his ex-wife and two of her relatives in a jealous rampage 30 years ago. Jerry Correll, 59, is scheduled to die by injection at 6 p.m. in the execution chamber at Florida State Prison. Correll's execution was originally set for February but was delayed as the U.S. Supreme Court weighed a challenge to the drug midazolam, a sedative used during the state's lethal injection protocol. |

Runaway U.S. military blimp wreaks havoc in Pennsylvania Posted: 28 Oct 2015 09:02 PM PDT EXCHANGE, Pa./WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A high-tech U.S. military blimp designed to detect a missile attack came loose on Wednesday and wreaked havoc as it floated from Maryland into Pennsylvania while dragging more than a mile of cable and knocking out power to thousands. The U.S. military scrambled two armed F-16 fighter jets to keep watch as the massive blimp traveled into civilian airspace after coming untethered from its base at Aberdeen Proving Ground, a U.S. Army facility 40 miles (65 km) northeast of Baltimore. Pentagon officials said they were unsure why the 242-foot-long blimp broke free at 12:20 p.m. Military officials wrestled for hours over the best way to bring it down safely, but eventually it deflated on its own. |
Republicans Bush, Rubio turn on each other in presidential debate Posted: 28 Oct 2015 06:52 PM PDT By Steve Holland and James Oliphant BOULDER, Colo. (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush lashed out at rival Marco Rubio in a spirited debate on Wednesday, joining a Florida newspaper in suggesting Rubio should resign his Senate seat given all of his missed votes. With time running short until the first nominating contest in three months, the Republicans were quick to leap to the attack at a debate that featured frequent personal criticism and many candidates talking over the moderators in their haste to make points. Rubio, a U.S. senator from Florida, defended his record of missing about one-third of his Senate votes this year while campaigning for the White House and said a Florida newspaper's call for him to resign was evidence of "the bias that exists in the American media today." Bush, former Florida governor and once considered a mentor to Rubio, was not buying the explanation. |
