Sharpton to speak at funeral for slain New York City police officer

Al Sharpton is expected to speak at the funeral on Wednesday for New York City Police Officer Randolph Holder, who was shot to death last week while on patrol in the city's East Harlem neighborhood. The prominent activist, media figure and long-time critic of the New York City Police Department was asked to speak at the service by Holder's father, a spokesman for Sharpton said. Holder, 33, was killed by a single shot to the head on Oct. 20, the fourth New York City officer to be killed in the line of duty in the last 12 months.


Maine marijuana-legalization groups join forces on ballot measure

The Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol said that it would put its organization behind a ballot initiative submitted by Legalize Maine. Legalize Maine had already collected about 40,000 signatures of voters who support the initiative and would need a total of 61,000 by January to place the measure on a statewide ballot.

Man accused of killing four at Texas SXSW festival heads to trial

Rashad Owens, 23, is facing 26 charges that include capital murder, which is punishable by death, for the accident at the annual SXSW celebration of music, technology and movies that draws tens of thousands to the Texas capital from around the world. Jamie West, 27, of Austin, and Steven Craenmehr, 35, of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, died at the scene. Sandy Thuy Le, 26, who had moved from Mississippi to Austin, died about a week later from injuries sustained in the accident and 18-year-old DeAndre Tatum, of Fort Worth, died shortly after that.

Guantanamo judge rejects 9/11 defense conflict of interest claim

A Guantanamo Bay judge on Monday rejected claims by lawyers for a Yemeni Sept. 11 suspect that a U.S. government investigation of the attorneys had created an ethical conflict of interest for them. Defense lawyers can file a motion if they believe the documents show there is a conflict that could compromise their representation, he said. The pre-trial hearing stemmed from claims by lawyers for Sept. 11 suspect Ramzi bin al Shibh.

The contract then goes to a ratification vote of the UAW's 52,700 workers at GM.

Adacia Avery Chambers, 25, allegedly drove a gray Hyundai Elantra into a throng watching Saturday's Oklahoma State University homecoming parade in Stillwater, about 65 miles (105 km) southwest of Oklahoma City. Police said they suspected she was intoxicated.


Timberwolves coach Saunders dies at age 60

NBA: Washington Wizards at Minnesota Timberwolves"It is with extreme sadness that the Minnesota Timberwolves today learned that Phil "Flip" Saunders, who served as the team's President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach, in addition to being a minority owner of the team, passed away today at age 60," the team said in a statement. Saunders, a veteran of 17 NBA seasons who posted a career record of 654-592, was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system, in June.
