Back to the future: A last look at NYC's 1960's-era TWA Flight Center

Kennedy International Airport on Sunday to get a last look at the iconic architecture of the Trans World Airlines Flight Center before the futuristic 1960's building is converted into a hotel. The terminal, built in 1962 as an uplifting symbol of the Jet Age, was designed by renowned Finnish-born architect Eero Saarinen, who also created St. Louis' Gateway Arch. The "Mad Men"-era edifice, now a national historic landmark, was used by TWA until the airline went bankrupt in 2001.


Suspect dead after killing sheriff's deputy at Minnesota hospital

The deputy, who guarding a person under investigation, was shot and killed around 5:15 a.m. CDT (1015 GMT) at St. Cloud Hospital, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Security officers responded and "subdued" the suspect, who later died, the agency said.

A shooting at a Florida Zombicon event killed one person and injured four others, the Fort Myers Police Department said on Sunday in a social media post. The shots were fired shortly before midnight on Saturday at the festival in downtown Fort Myers on the state's west coast, according to the News-Press newspaper. The four who were injured sustained non-life threatening injuries, the News-Press said, citing police.

New Jersey tech institute wins U.S. solar home design competition

Students from New Jersey-based Stevens Institute of Technology won the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon, taking the top trophy at the event in California by building a flood-resistant house that is also energy efficient, officials said on Saturday. The so-called Sure House the students constructed at the Department of Energy's competition in Irvine, south of Los Angeles, was built with repurposed materials from the boat- building industry and was designed to be placed on the coastline, making use of natural light. It has a large shuttered patio to double the home's usable space in summer, and relies on solar energy for power.

Sketches of suspects in stabbing of French train hero released

Two suspects in the stabbing of Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone are seen in police sketches released by the Sacramento, California Police DepartmentThe two composite sketches are based on eyewitness accounts of the Oct. 8 assault in the Northern California city, where Stone was stabbed several times during a fight outside a bar, police said. Investigators said they believe the male suspects were wearing white shirts and blue jeans. Police have not disclosed what caused the fight that led to "significant injuries" to Stone, who was taken to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.
