Mississippi city sued over jailing of poor who miss court payments Posted: 21 Oct 2015 11:32 AM PDT The group said the Gulf Coast city known for its casinos and white-sand beaches locks up hundreds of indigent debtors each year for days or weeks at a time without access to a court hearing or lawyer, a violation of their constitutional rights. "People are being jailed because they're poor," said ACLU attorney Nusrat Choudhury. Biloxi spokesman Vincent Creel said the city "treats all defendants fairly under the law" and that its courts have ordered community service for people who could not pay their fines. |
Suspect identified in killing of New York police officer Posted: 21 Oct 2015 09:59 AM PDT A 30-year-old man with a long criminal history is suspected of killing a New York City police officer on Tuesday night in the city's East Harlem neighborhood, police said. Officer Randolph Holder was shot around 8:30 p.m. during an exchange of gunfire on a pedestrian overpass above the Franklin D. Roosevelt East River Drive, a busy highway that runs along the east side of Manhattan. Police identified the suspect as Tyrone Howard, who was shot in the leg and arrested a few blocks from the shooting. |

The single-seater US Navy plane came down near the town of Ely, around 130 kilometres (80 miles) north of London, after taking off from RAF Lakenheath airforce base in Suffolk. "We can confirm that the aircraft was a military aircraft," a police spokesman said. |

The investigation is at an early stage and senior Justice Department lawyers in Washington are undecided on whether daily fantasy sports betting violates federal gambling statutes, the newspaper reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The newspaper reported earlier this month that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Justice Department were investigating the industry, but the central role of Bharara's office was not previously known. |

Ahmed Mohamed, 14, a bespectacled ninth-grader who became an Internet sensation for an arrest that supporters said was influenced by bias against his Muslim religion, has accepted an offer from the Qatar Foundation to study at its Young Innovators Program. "This means, that we, as a family, will relocate to Qatar where Ahmed will receive a full scholarship for secondary and undergraduate education," his family said in a statement. |
