Nine people died in a fiery business jet crash in Ohio, state officials confirmed on Wednesday, as an investigation into the reasons for the jet's crash continued. Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board as well as Akron police were at the site where the 10-passenger Hawker business jet struck an apartment building on Tuesday while approaching the Akron Fulton airport. The flight manifest showed seven passengers, a pilot and a co-pilot were on board at the time of the crash and their families have been notified, said Ohio State Patrol spokesman Bill Haymaker.

A U.S. Army captain who was badly wounded thwarting a suicide bomber in Afghanistan on what he has called the worst day of his life will be awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama on Thursday. Retired Captain Florent Groberg, 32, will receive the Medal of Honor, the highest U.S. award for valor, in a White House ceremony. Groberg, who was born in Poissy, France, and is a naturalized U.S. citizen, is being honored for his actions during an ambush in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, on Aug. 8, 2012.

Amtrak train 190, headed to Boston from Washington, D.C., struck the person at around 8:27 a.m. at the Metro North commuter rail station in Stratford, Connecticut, said Aaron Donovan, spokesman for New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The victim, who was not authorized to be on the tracks, was not immediately identified.

White House announces in-state tuition for U.S. veterans, families

All recent U.S. military veterans and their families will now be offered in-state tuition rates to public colleges and universities throughout the country, the White House said on Wednesday. Announced in honor of the U.S. federal holiday Veterans Day, which fell on Wednesday, the change is part of President Barack Obama's "steadfast commitment" to military families and aims to make sure veterans can both access and get the most out of higher education, administration officials said. Cecilia Munoz, a top domestic policy adviser to the president, said while Obama is pressing his administration to push these changes forward quickly, he is also calling on Congress to move forward on three pieces of legislation to help improve veterans' education.

Obama nominates new chief for hacked U.S. personnel agency

President Barack Obama on Tuesday nominated Beth Cobert to head the Office of Personnel Management, the U.S. federal agency that has been under intense public and congressional scrutiny since a hack on its computer systems affecting 22 million people was disclosed earlier this year. Cobert has been the acting director of OPM since Katherine Archuleta, the previous director, resigned in July amid a bipartisan call for her to step down due to her management of the data breach. Cobert needs approval by the U.S. Senate to be named head of OPM, a vetting process that will likely include probing of how Cobert intends to improve the agency's cyber defenses.
