New York police horses, '10-foot cop' key to city's high alert

Days after the New York Police Department deployed its new counter terrorism team and flashed a "show of force" to ward off potential attacks, it unveiled a new $30 million hay-filled headquarters for its 52-horse, 100-officer mounted unit on the ground floor of a luxury building on Manhattan's trendy far West Side. Gleaming gold finials atop the same brand of stalls used by the Queen of England and a manure disposal system specially designed by the city Sanitation Department to contain smells are among the features of the 26,000-square foot (2,415-square meter) space, said Inspector Barry Gelbman.

(Reuters) - The University of North Dakota said on Wednesday it will adopt the "Fighting Hawks" as its new nickname after retiring the "Fighting Sioux," which was banned under a national college sports policy that deemed such names and symbols racially offensive. Voters, including students, faculty, staff, retirees, alumni, donors and season ticket holders, chose "Fighting Hawks" over "Roughriders" after a third runoff vote conducted from Nov. 12 until midnight on Monday, the university's president, Robert Kelley, said. The Hawks received slightly more than 57 percent of the 27,378 votes cast.

An Ohio jury this week convicted a man of strangling his pregnant wife to death with a belt in 1985, in a case that was re-opened as a result of a 2009 arson investigation, a prosecutor's spokesman said on Wednesday. A Summit County jury convicted Scott Purk, 53, of murder and tampering with evidence on Tuesday after a six-day trial in Akron, said James Pollack of the Summit County prosecutor's office. Margaret Purk, 24, was nine months pregnant when she was found dead in the apartment she shared with her husband 30 years ago.

Ferguson, Missouri names new city manager

Texas to execute man convicted of killing three children in house fire

Texas plans on Wednesday to execute Raphael Holiday, 36, who was convicted of killing his daughter and two stepdaughters in a mobile home blaze in 2000. Holiday is set to be put to death by lethal injection at 6 p.m. local time at the state's death chamber in Huntsville. If the execution goes ahead, Holiday would be the 531st inmate executed by Texas since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976, the most of any state.
