Pentagon plan to shut Guantanamo prison to list alternative U.S. sites Posted: 09 Nov 2015 12:26 PM PST By Phil Stewart and Patricia Zengerle WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon is expected to unveil a long-awaited plan this week outlining how it would close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, despite fierce resistance in Congress to President Barack Obama's push to shutter the facility, officials say. The plan would have four sections, one of which would detail potential U.S. alternatives for holding detainees, including the Centennial Correctional Facility in Colorado, one of the more promising locations, one U.S. official said. A small team of Defense Department officials has surveyed facilities including the Consolidated Naval Brig in South Carolina and the Federal Correctional Complex in Florence, Colorado, the Pentagon says. |

SeaWorld to phase out killer whale show in San Diego: report Posted: 09 Nov 2015 10:50 AM PST (Reuters) - SeaWorld plans to phase out its killer whale show at its San Diego park next year as part of a comprehensive strategy unveiled on Monday to re-position the company amid criticism of how it treats orcas, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. A new orca experience in a more natural setting will take its place and debut in 2017, the newspaper said, citing a company document in advance of a webcast, where executives will unveil their vision for the company. Bail set at $1 million for Louisiana marshals charged in boy's death Posted: 09 Nov 2015 09:59 AM PST Two Louisiana marshals charged in a shooting that left a 6-year-old boy dead and his father injured will be required to surrender their service firearms and badges if they are able to post $1 million in bail ordered by a judge on Monday. Judge William Bennett set bail for marshals Derrick Stafford, 32, and Norris Greenhouse Jr., 23, during a closed hearing at the Avoyelles Parish Jail. The two men were working for the Marksville City Marshal in central Louisiana when they fired 18 times at a vehicle after a chase last week, state police said. |

Two Americans, one South African killed at Jordan security training site Posted: 09 Nov 2015 06:15 AM PST By Suleiman Al-Khalidi AMMAN (Reuters) - A Jordanian army officer shot dead two American military personnel and one South African and wounded six other people on Monday at a U.S.-funded security training facility near Amman, Jordan's government spokesman said. It took place on the 10th anniversary of al Qaeda suicide bombings that targeted three Amman luxury hotels and killed dozens of people in the worst militant attack in the history of Jordan, a staunch U.S. ally. Jordan is now part of the Washington-led coalition that is trying to defeat Islamic State insurgents that have seized large tracts of Syria and Iraq, both of which border Jordan. |

Derailed Wisconsin train leaks ethanol into Mississippi Posted: 08 Nov 2015 05:05 PM PST (Reuters) - A Canadian Pacific freight train carrying crude oil through Wisconsin derailed on Sunday, knocking 12 cars off the tracks and spilling oil in the state's second derailment in two days. Earlier on Sunday, the BNSF Railway Co said its crews had stanched the flow of ethanol from a freight train that derailed on Saturday about 140 miles (220 km) away in Alma, Wisconsin, after thousands of gallons of the denatured alcohol leaked into the Mississippi River. In that incident, 25 cars derailed about two miles (3.2 km) north of Alma, a rural community close to the Minnesota border, at about 8:45 a.m. (1445 GMT) on Saturday, the railroad said. |
