U.S. House passes strict screening for Syrians, defying veto threat Posted: 19 Nov 2015 11:25 AM PST The U.S. House of Representatives easily passed legislation on Thursday to boost security screenings for Syrian refugees and suspend President Barack Obama's program to admit 10,000 of them in the next year, defying a White House veto threat. The vote was largely along party lines, although dozens of Obama's fellow Democrats broke with the White House to vote for the bill. |
Missing Minnesota teenage sisters found safe: police Posted: 19 Nov 2015 10:54 AM PST Local law enforcement and U.S. Marshals executed a search warrant on Wednesday afternoon relating to the missing sisters, Samantha Rucki, 17, and Gianna Rucki, 16 a Lakeville, a Minnesota police statement said. The sisters will return to Dakota County to reunite with the Rucki family, officials said, asking the public for respect and privacy during the family reunification period. Samantha and Gianna Rucki had been missing since April 2013, after running away from home during a custody battle between their parents, the Star Tribune reported. |
Police in Los Angeles seek 'unauthorized person' at airport: KTLA Posted: 19 Nov 2015 10:39 AM PST Police are searching the Los Angeles International Airport, commonly known as LAX, for an "unauthorized person" who tried to board a JetBlue flight on Thursday, KTLA television station reported. The flight was scheduled to depart for New York early in the morning, but airport police received a call that an unauthorized person was trying to use a boarding bridge to enter an aircraft, according to KTLA, a Tribune Media Co broadcaster. The flight was then delayed while the plane was towed to a remote area of the airfield for a Los Angeles Police Department bomb squad to conduct a search, KTLA said. |
More Mexican immigrants leaving U.S. than entering: Pew Posted: 19 Nov 2015 09:30 AM PST More Mexicans are leaving the United States than entering it according to a report released on Thursday, at a time when some Republicans, including presidential candidate Donald Trump, have taken a hard line on illegal immigration. Most Mexicans leaving the United States are doing so voluntarily to reunite with their family or to start one, the report by the Pew Research Center showed. From 2009 to 2014, more than one million Mexicans and their families left the United States for Mexico, while more than 865,000 entered the United States, Pew said. |

Pinder said that 4 percent of Towson's tenure-track faculty is black. Towson has about 19,000 undergraduate students, 17 percent of them black, according to the CollegeData higher education website. |
Massachusetts proposes new regulations on daily fantasy sports games Posted: 19 Nov 2015 07:37 AM PST By Scott Malone BOSTON (Reuters) - Massachusetts would prohibit people under the age of 21 from playing paid fantasy sports games under a proposed set of regulations for the fast-growing, multibillion-dollar industry laid out on Thursday by state Attorney General Maura Healey. The proposals would also prohibit professional athletes, agents and others connected to pro sports from taking part in paid fantasy contests related to their sports and ban promotions of paid fantasy sports on college campuses. The fantasy sports business, led by DraftKings and FanDuel, has drawn increasing regulatory scrutiny over the past few weeks with state regulatory officials debating whether the paid daily games are gambling. |
Georgia to execute man for woman's 1994 fatal stabbing Posted: 19 Nov 2015 07:06 AM PST Marcus Ray Johnson, 50, stabbed Angela Sizemore 41 times after the two left a bar in Albany, Georgia, on March 24, 1994, according to a Georgia Supreme Court synopsis of the case. If Johnson's lethal injection proceeds at 7 p.m. at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification prison in Jackson, he will be the 27th person executed in the United States this year. Johnson admitted punching Sizemore, 34, in the face but did not remember anything else until he woke up the next morning, according to court records. |

The Department of Homeland Security said two men, two women and four children "presented themselves" at the port of entry and were taken into custody by Border Patrol agents before being handed over to immigration officials for processing. |
Obama says can close Guantanamo jail while keeping Americans safe Posted: 19 Nov 2015 05:49 AM PST By Matt Spetalnick MANILA (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama vowed on Thursday to press ahead with the release of his plan on how he hopes to close the Guantanamo military prison but said last week's Paris attacks would stoke further congressional resistance to his efforts. Obama drew a link between a bid by Republicans to block the inflow of Syrian refugees to the United States, based on concerns they could ignite Paris-style violence in American cities, and their opposition to the closing of the Guantanamo detention center at the U.S. Navy base in Cuba. "We can keep the American people safe while shutting down that operation," Obama told reporters at a joint appearance before reporters with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. |
Suspected mastermind of Paris attacks Abaaoud died in police raid: prosecutor Posted: 19 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST The suspected mastermind of the attacks that killed 129 in Paris was among those killed in a police raid in a suburb of the French capital on Wednesday, the Paris prosecutor said in a statement on Thursday. Abdelhamid Abaaoud, a 28-year-old Belgian militant, who had boasted of mounting attacks in Europe for the Islamic State, was accused of orchestrating Friday's coordinated bombings and shootings. Police originally thought he was in Syria, but their investigations led them to a house in the Paris suburb of St. Denis and heavily armed officers stormed the building before dawn, triggering a massive firefight and multiple explosions. |
Ex-Subway spokesman to be sentenced on child sex charges Posted: 19 Nov 2015 04:28 AM PST Former Subway sandwich spokesman Jared Fogle on Thursday is scheduled to be sentenced to prison after he officially pleads guilty to child pornography and sex charges. Fogle, who became famous after losing weight on a diet that included sandwiches from the fast food chain, agreed in August to a deal with prosecutors under which he would plead guilty to charges of child pornography and traveling for illicit paid sex with minors. Under his agreement with prosecutors, Fogle is set to change his plea to guilty on Thursday and be sentenced by a U.S. district judge in Indianapolis. |

Three killed, 185,000 left without power after Washington state storms Posted: 19 Nov 2015 01:23 AM PST About 185,000 homes and businesses remained without power in Washington state late on Wednesday, after a storm blew down trees and triggered mudslides, killing at least three people, authorities said. Governor Jay Inslee declared a statewide emergency because of the storm, which left a wide swath of the Puget Sound region under flood watches and warnings. In the Spokane area of eastern Washington, utility Avista warned it could take three to five days to restore services to nearly 115,000 customers without power. |
Slow U.S. tuition growth is 'new normal' for higher education: Moody's Posted: 18 Nov 2015 09:47 PM PST Higher education institutions suffered the weakest tuition growth in the history of Moody's survey last year. Such sluggishness "appears to be the 'new normal,'" reported Moody's, which is predicting another year of tuition revenue growth near levels of inflation, approximately 2 percent. Almost two-thirds of public universities will see tuition growth under 3 percent, in part because of state-imposed limits to keep tuition low and student enrollments that are either flat or declining. |
Minneapolis shooting officers identified as protests rage Posted: 18 Nov 2015 07:28 PM PST By Todd Melby MINNEAPOLIS (Reuters) - Minnesota officials on Wednesday identified the two Minneapolis police officers involved in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man as chanting demonstrators surrounded a key police station. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety said Minneapolis Police Department Officers Mark Ringgenberg and Dustin Schwarze were involved in the shooting of Jamar Clark, 24, Sunday. |
Texas judge halts execution of man convicted of killing three children Posted: 18 Nov 2015 04:34 PM PST A Texas judge on Wednesday halted the execution of a 36-year-old man, hours before he was due to be put to death by lethal injection for killing his daughter and two stepdaughters in a mobile home blaze in 2000. The Texas Attorney General's office appealed, trying to win a ruling that would allow the execution of Raphael Holiday to proceed. If the execution goes ahead, Holiday would be the 531st inmate executed by Texas since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976, the most of any state. |
NY City police aware of ISIS video but say no specific threat Posted: 18 Nov 2015 04:03 PM PST New York City police are aware of a newly released Islamic State video that suggests that the largest U.S. city was a potential target of attacks such as those in Paris last week, but that there are no current or specific threats, the department said on Wednesday. "While some of the video footage is not new, the video reaffirms the message that New York City remains a top terrorist target," Stephen Davis, a Deputy NYPD Commissioner, said in a statement. |
No new date set for Utah oil lease sale delayed by activists Posted: 18 Nov 2015 02:58 PM PST The U.S. government has not set a new date for an oil and natural gas lease auction of federal lands in Utah postponed this week following overwhelming interest from the public, including climate activists, who wanted to attend the event. Officials want to hold the auction as soon as possible but rescheduling the sale is tricky going into the holidays, Megan Crandall, a spokeswoman for the Bureau of Land Management office in Utah, said on Wednesday. The BLM on Tuesday postponed the auction of leases on 39 parcels of public land representing nearly 37,600 acres, mostly in the northeastern part of Utah. |
Terrorists Once Used Refugee Program to Settle in US Posted: 18 Nov 2015 02:43 PM PST Of the 31 states that have declared their opposition to taking in Syrian refugees, one state, Kentucky, has a specific reason to be wary of the background check process: previously two Iraqi refugees who settled in Bowling Green turned out to be al Qaeda-linked terrorists with the blood of American soldiers on their hands, an ABC News investigation found. Both pleaded guilty to terror-connected charges after trying to acquire heavy weapons while in America's heartland. The 2013 ABC News investigation also revealed that several dozen other suspected terrorist bombmakers, including some who were believed to have targeted U.S. troops, may have mistakenly been allowed to move to the U.S. as Iraq and Afghanistan War refugees, among the tens of thousands of innocent immigrants. |

Calls for U.S. troops to fight Islamic State misguided, say experts Posted: 18 Nov 2015 01:39 PM PST Americans want the Obama administration to get tougher with the Islamic State following the carnage in Paris, but many of the measures now being proposed could actually make the threat worse, counter-terrorism experts said. Republican presidential candidates, lawmakers and others are calling for deploying U.S. ground forces to the Middle East, using air power to create a Syria safe zone to train anti-Islamic State fighters and barring Syrian refugees. "There is no compelling reason to believe that anything we are doing will be sufficient," Republican Senator John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, declared on Tuesday in a speech in which he proposed intervention by a European and Arab ground force backed by 10,000 U.S. military advisers and trainers. |
