| Pennsylvania officer who shot, killed prone suspect heads to trial Posted: 03 Nov 2015 04:29 AM PST HARRISBURG, Pa. (Reuters) - - Opening arguments are expected to begin on Tuesday in the murder trial of a Pennsylvania police officer who shot and killed a suspect last February as he lay face down in the snow, immobilized by a Taser charge. The shooting death of David Kassick, 59, by Officer Lisa Mearkle, 37, was captured on the video camera in her Taser, police say. Judge Deborah Curcillo of the Dauphin County Court of Common Pleas granted his request, saying the media could not see the video before the jury views it. |
| U.S. orders girls' locker room access for transgender Illinois student Posted: 03 Nov 2015 04:11 AM PST The U.S. government on Monday found that a Chicago suburban high school district discriminated against a transgender student and gave the school a month to provide full access to girls' locker rooms or lose federal funding. After an investigation stemming from a 2013 complaint by the ACLU, and months of negotiations, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights found Township High School District 211 was violating federal non-discrimination rules. The case is seen as clarifying federal rules on locker-room access at a time of expanding awareness of transgender issues. |

Lonsdale, who had denied plaintiff Elise Clougherty's allegations, also dropped counterclaims against her, including defamation, and each side will bear their own costs and expenses connected to the lawsuit, according to a joint filing. Clougherty, who started dating Lonsdale in 2012 while she was a Stanford University student and he was her mentor, accused him of sexual assault and related charges in a lawsuit filed in January. |

| Pentagon spends $43 million to build Afghanistan gas station: watchdog Posted: 02 Nov 2015 12:47 PM PST By Idrees Ali WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Department of Defense spent nearly $43 million on a gas station in northern Afghanistan and has been unable to explain why it cost so much, a U.S. special inspector reported on Monday. The Pentagon "charged the American taxpayers $43 million for what is likely to be the world's most expensive gas station," said John Sopko, head of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, a congressionally mandated body. The gas station in Sheberghan, Afghanistan opened in 2012 and was created to show that compressed natural gas could be used in Afghanistan in cars effectively. |
